Antihyperglycemic and hepatoprotective properties of miracle fruit(Synsepalum dulcificum) compared to aspartame in alloxan-induced diabetic mice

Objective: This study was undertaken to investigate the antihyperglycemic potential of miracle fruit(MF)as well as its hepatic safety as compared to aspartame in alloxan-induced diabetic ***: MF extracts were prepared and screened for their phytochemical composition using highperformance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents and antioxidant potential were also determined. Additionally, MF was evaluated for its sensory attributes. For in vivo work, MF ethanol extract at high(MFH: 500 mg/kg body weight [BW]) and low(MFL: 250 mg/kg BW) doses as well as aspartame were injected intraperitoneally into alloxan-induced diabetic *** glucose levels were determined following acute and subchronic treatment. At the end of the study,animals were sacrificed, serum was collected for biochemical analysis and liver tissues were obtained for histopathological ***: MF ethanol extract contained more flavonoids and tannins, and had higher 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity(79.61%) compared to MF aqueous extract(P g the major polyphenol. Additionally, sensory analysis of MF showed that its intake is effective in masking undesirable sourness. Subchronic administration of MFH proved amelioration of hyperglycemia in mice as compared to aspartame. Moreover, aspartame treatment significantly elevated(P gy;however, hepatic architecture was restored by low and high doses of ***: MF is an effective antihyperglycemic with hepatoprotective properties that can be used as a healthier alternative sweetening agent in place of aspartame for sour beverages.

Uncovering the dominant contribution of intermediate volatility compounds in secondary organic aerosol formation from biomass-burning emissions

Organic vapors from biomass burning are a major source of secondary organic aerosols(SOAs). Previous smog chamber studies found that the SOA contributors in biomass-burning emissions are mainly volatile organic compounds(VOCs). While intermediate volatility organic compounds(IVOCs) are efficient SOA precursors and contribute a considerable fraction of biomass-burning emissions, their contribution to SOA formation has not been directly observed. Here, by deploying a newly-developed oxidation flow reactor to study SOA formation from wood burning, we find that IVOCs can contribute ～70% of the formed SOA, i.e.>2 times more than VOCs. This previously missing SOA fraction is interpreted to be due to the high wall losses of semi-volatile oxidation products of IVOCs in smog chambers. The finding in this study reveals that SOA production from biomass burning is much higher than previously thought, and highlights the urgent need for more research on the IVOCs from biomass burning and potentially other emission sources.

Pilot study on the effect of flavonoids on arterial stiffness and oxidative stress in chronic kidney disease

ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF RESIDUAL IMPACT PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS BY ACOUSTO-ULTRASONICS——A PATTERN RECOgNITION APPROACH

This paper deals with the application of Acousto-ultrasonics,in con- junction with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques,to the identification of residual impact properties of a class of polymeric material,namely,Polyvinylchlo- ride(PVC).PVC specimens of different low-energy repeated impact damage states are processed by Acousto-ultrasonics(AU)to retrieve AU signals in the form of dig- italized *** AU signals are grouped as distinct classes,each pertaining to a known level of repeated impact *** features of these AU signals are used to build Pattern Recognition(PR)*** classifiers are used to identify unknown damage states in other PVC specimens by classifying the re- trieved AU signals as belonging to one of the *** obtained results indicate that Acousto-ultrasonics in combination with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques can be used for the quantitative non-destructive identification of damage states in PVC specimens of unknown low-energy repeated impact conditions.

Evaluation of sour gas-low salinity waterflooding in carbonate reservoirs-A numerical simulation approach

A randomized open-label trial of on-demand rabeprazole vs ranitidine for patients with non-erosive reflux disease

AIM： To compare the efficacy of the proton-pump inhibitor, rabeprazole, with that of the H2-receptor antagonist, ranitidine, as on-demand therapy for relieving symptoms associated with non-erosive reflux disease （NEED）.METHODS： This is a single center, prospective, randomized, open-label trial of on-demand therapy with rabeprazole （group A） vs ranitidine （group B） for 4 wk. Eighty-three patients who presented to the American University of Beirut Medical Center with persistent gas- troesophageal reflux disease （gERD） symptoms and a normal upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were eligible for the study. Patients in group A （n = 44） were al-lowed a maximum rabeprazole dose of 20 mg twice daily, while those in group B （n = 39） were allowed a maximum ranitidine dose of 300 mg twice daily. Ef- ficacy was assessed by patient evaluation of global symptom relief, scores of the SF-36 quality of life （QoL） questionnaires, total number of pills used, and number of medication-free days.RESULTS： Among the 83 patients who were enrolled in the study, 76 patients （40 in the rabeprazole group and 36 in the ranitidine group） completed the 4-wk trial. Baseline characteristics were comparable between both groups. After 4 wk, there was no significant difference in the subjective global symptom relief between the rabeprazole and the ranitidine groups （71.4% vs 65.4%, respectively; P = 0.9）. There were no statistically significant differences between mean cumulative scores of the SF-36 QoL questionnaire for the two study groups （rabeprazole 22.40±27.53 vs ranitidine 17.28 ± 37.06; P = 0.582）. There was no significant difference in the mean number of pills used （rabeprazole 35.70±29.75 vs ranitidine 32.86±26.98; P = 0.66）. A New Schiff Base Derivatives Designed to Bind Metal Ion (Cu, Co): Thermodynamics and Biological Activity Studies

Schiff base synthesis is usually acid catalyzed and it usually requires refluxing the mixture of aldehydes and amine in ethanolic solution. Synthesis and characterization of Schiff base ligands derived from substituted amine and salicylaldehyde and their complexes (Cu2+, Co2+) are reported. The ligands and ligand-complexes were characterized by melting point, FTIR, CHN-elemental analysis and UV-Visible analysis. The UV-Visible and elemental analysis of complexes established (1:2) mole ratio (M:L). The stability constant and thermodynamic parameters (K, Δg, ΔH, ΔS) were determined at different temperature (30 - 40)°C which established that the metal-complexes were very stable. The review describes the promising biological activities of Schiff base and their metal complexes.
