Aiming to improve the battery performance of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs),modification of the cathodes and anodes of LIBs using laser beams to prepare through-holes,non-through-holes or ditches arranged in grid and line patterns has been proposed by many researchers and *** this study,a laser processing system attached to rollers,which realizes this modification without large changes in the present mass-production system,was *** laser system apparatus comprises roll-to-roll equipment and laser *** roll-to-roll equipment mainly consists of a hollow cylinder with openings on its circumferential *** and anode electrodes for LIBs are wound around the cylinder in the longitudinal direction of the electrodes.A pulsed beam reflected from the central axis of the cylinder can continuously open a large number of through-holes in the thin ***-holes were formed at a rate of 100000 holes per second on lithium iron phosphate cathodes and graphite anodes with this *** through-holed cathodes and anodes prepared with this system exhibited higher C-rate performance than nontreated cathodes and anodes.

Seedling establishment on fallen logs is a major regeneration system for tree species in boreal forests. Seedling survival on fallen logs is affected not only by the microsite environment but also by the genetic factors of individuals. To quantify the genetic effects on seedling longevity, we identified seedlings using a number tag system and collected needles of Picea jezoensis and Abies sachalinensis established on fallen logs in spring 2006. Survival or death of each seedling was investigated during 2006-2012. We genotyped seedlings with microsatellite markers and calculated individual-based multilocus heterozygosity (MLH) for each seedling. A Cox proportional hazards model was applied to evaluate the effects of MLH on seedling longevity of the two species considering the fallen log conditions. The model indicated that MLH positively affected seedling longevity in P. jezoensis, whereas the effects of MLH were not significant in A. sachalinensis. Here, we discuss differences in the effects of MLH on seedling longevity between the two species, considering species characteristics and MLH frequency distribution.

With the development of low-cost processor, memory and radio technologies, it becomes possible to build inexpensive wireless micro-sensor nodes. However, energy is the biggest constraint to wireless sensor capabilities and such constraint combined with a typical deployment of large numbers of sensor nodes have posed many challenges to the design and management of sensor networks. Due to their ad-hoc deployment in hazardous environment, once sensor nodes are deployed in a sensor network, they cannot be easily replaced or recharged. Thus, energy saving acts as one of the hottest topics in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and hence several energy conservation schemes have been proposed in the literature. In this work, we will make a short survey on the main techniques used for energy conservation in sensor networks. Specifically, we will focus primarily on duty cycling schemes which represent the most suitable technique for energy saving. Moreover, we will also survey in-network processing and network coding techniques which can guarantee a significant amount of energy saving in packet transmission. Finally, we will make a review on some communication protocols proposed for sensor networks.

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) catalyze the dismutation of superoxide and play an important role in reducing oxidative stress in plants. Based on in-gel SOD activity staining, chloroplasts of the moss Physcomitrella patens have two CuZn-SODs as the major SOD isozymes and minor SODs, including a Fe-SOD and two Mn-SODs. To investigate the contribution of chloroplastic SODs to stress tolerance in P. patens, we generated a double mutant lacking chloroplastic CuZn-SOD genes. The mutant did not show any differences in comparison to the wild type based on the growth of protonemata on normal and high-salt media, extractable activities of the other SODs after culture on normal and high-salt media, and inhibition of Fv/Fm under stress conditions (high-salt, high-light, and high-temperature). These results indicate that chloroplastic CuZn-SODs do not play a principal role in oxidative stress tolerance in chloroplasts under the investigated conditions. These findings explain the previously reported unusual response of P. patens to copper deficiency, in which chloroplastic CuZn-SODs are preferentially inactivated but cytosolic CuZn-SODs are unaffected.

In this study, we investigated the clinical relevance of anti-myelin antibodies in patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO);titers of antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoproteins, proteolipid proteins and myelin basic proteins were measured in the sera of patients with NMO and compared to healthy controls, as well as to patients with other diseases. The frequency of presence of anti-myelin antibodies in patients with NMO was significantly higher than that in healthy and diseased controls. The expanded disability status scale scores correlated with the titers of the anti-myelin antibodies. Patients with anti-myelin antibody exhibited other autoantibodies significantly more frequently than patients without the antibody. Anti-myelin antibodies may be useful markers for predicting severe clinical courses in patients with NMO.

AIM： To investigate the clinical significance of BMP and activin membrane-bound inhibitor （BAMBI） which is a pseudoreceptor of transforming growth factorbeta （TGF-β） type 1 receptors and acts as a negative regulator of TGF-β signaling and expression aberrantly elevated in colorectal cancers （CRCs）. We studied BAMBI expression in CRCs. METHODS： We studied BAMBI expression in 183 surgically resected CRCs by immunochemical and immunoblotting analyses using a generated monoclonal anti-BAMBI antibody. Commercially available anti-β- catenin and anti-p53 antibodies were also applied for immunochemical analyses as a comparison ***： Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that BAMBI expression was observed in 148 （80.8%）, and strong BAMBI expression was observed in 46% of the CRCs. Strong BAMBI expression was positively correlated with histological type, depth of invasion, lymph node metastases, and tumor node metastasis （TNM） stage （P 〈 0.05）. Clear associations were found between BAMBI and β-catenin （P = 0.035） and p53 （P =0.049） expression. In curatively resected CRC, 5-year recurrence-free survival was 51.9% （P = 0.037） for strong BAMBI expression compared to 79.8% for weak BAMBI expression. In the Cox＇s multivariate analysis, lymph node metastases （relative risk 6.685; P 〈 0.001） and depth of invasion （RR 14.0; P = 0.013） were significant indicators for recurrence, and strong BAMBI expression （RR 2.26; P = 0.057） tended to be significant. CONCLUSION： BAMBI was linked to a potentially aggressive tumor phenotype and predicted tumor recurrence and cancer-related death in CRC. BAMBI expression might be applicable in the routine clinical setting of CRC.

This study aimed to determine age-related fall risk characteristics among 2324 Japanese community-dwelling elderly through comparisons between young-old and old-old populations. Fall risk characteristics associated with “physical function”, “disease and physical symptom”, “behavior and character”, and “environment” were evaluated, and whether each individual has a high-risk symptom for each risk factor was assessed. The frequencies of individuals for all 16 risk types, which were determined by a combination of the four risk factors, were calculated. The prevalence of each risk type and the incidence of falling in each risk type were calculated within the young-old and old-old groups, and significant differences between these percentages were examined using the chi-square test. The prevalence of the no high-risk symptom group was significantly lower in the old-old group (17.0%) than in the young-old group (45.2%). Although there was no significant difference in the prevalence of the single high-risk symptom group, the prevalence of the two or more high-risk symptom groups was significantly higher in the old-old group. The incidence of fall among the elderly with high-risk symptoms did not change with age, although the incidence of fall with no high-risk symptom increased in the old-old group. Furthermore, high prevalence was observed in risk types with high-risk symptoms for “physical function” and “behavior and character”, particularly in the symptoms of gait, going up and down stairs, and fear of falling. These age-related differences are interesting and meaningful.

Stochastic Programming Model for Discrete Lotsizing and Scheduling Problem on Parallel Machines

In recent years, it has been difficult for manufactures and suppliers to forecast demand from a market for a given product precisely. Therefore, it has become important for them to cope with fluctuations in demand. From this viewpoint, the problem of planning or scheduling in production systems can be regarded as a mathematical problem with stochastic elements. However, in many previous studies, such problems are formulated without stochastic factors, treating stochastic elements as deterministic variables or parameters. Stochastic programming incorporates such factors into the mathematical formulation. In the present paper, we consider a multi-product, discrete, lotsizing and scheduling problem on parallel machines with stochastic demands. Under certain assumptions, this problem can be formulated as a stochastic integer programming problem. We attempt to solve this problem by a scenario aggregation method proposed by Rockafellar and Wets. The results from computational experiments suggest that our approach is able to solve large-scale problems, and that, under the condition of uncertainty, incorporating stochastic elements into the model gives better results than formulating the problem as a deterministic model.

Time Course of Changes in Trabecular Bone Microstructure in Rats with Spinal Cord Injury

The study aimed to examine changes in trabecular bone microstructure （TBMS） during the period of 5 weeks after the injury in a rat model of spinal cord injury （SCI）. Eight-week-old male Wistar rats underwent surgical transection of the lower thoracic spinal cord （SCI, n = 16） or sham operation （SHAM, n = 14）. TBMS （tissue volume, bone volume, bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, width, number, separation, connectivity density, and trabecular bone pattern factor）, assessed using a micro-computed tomography, was deteriorated 1, 3 and 5 weeks after SCI. In addition, both bone mass and serum biochemical parameters were determined. Dry bone weight, ash weight, bone mineral content （BMC）, and BMC/tissue-volume were significantly lower in the SCI group than in the SHAM group throughout the experimental period. Serum inorganic phosphate and alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly lower in the SCI group than in the SHAM group 1 week after the surgery. SCI resulted in rapid deterioration of both bone mass and microstructure. These changes appeared as early as 1 week after SCI. Based on the authors＇ results, it should be noted that in SCI patients, interventions for preventing bone loss should start as soon as possible after the injury.
