Identifying genomic regions controlling ratoon stunting disease resistance in sugarcane(Saccharum spp.) clonal F_(1) population

The ratoon stunting disease (RSD) of sugarcane,caused by the bacterium Leifsonia xyli ***,is one of the major concerns to sugarcane production and breeding programs *** to no obvious external symptoms,RSD cannot be easily detected by the growers,hence has reduced the world’s sugarcane production *** study aimed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with RSD resistance and to assist in the development of linked molecular markers for marker-assisted breeding to minimize the reduction in sugarcane yield by the RSD infection.A set of 146 individuals derived from a self-crossing of CP80-1827 were evaluated for RSD resistance in a mechanically duplicated inoculated field trial from 2014 to 2017 using tissue blot *** the genetic data and the four years phenotyping data of CP80-1827 selfing population,linkage map construction and QTL analysis were conducted based on clonal F_1 and F_2 mapping population types with GACD V.1.2 and Ici Mapping V.3.3,respectively.A total of 23 QTL associated with RSD resistance were identified,which explained 6%to13%of the phenotypic variation with the two types of software.A total of 82 disease resistance genes were identified by searching these 23 QTL regions on their corresponding regions on the Sorghum bicolor genome (44 genes),sugarcane R570 genome (20 genes),and *** genome (18 genes),*** with Ici Mapping V.3.3,GACD V.1.2 identified more major (6 vs.3) and stable QTL (2vs.0),and more disease resistance genes (51 vs.31),indicating GACD V.1.2 (clonal F_1 mapping type) is most likely to be more efficient than Ici Mapping (F_2 mapping type) for QTL analysis of a sefling population or clonal F_1 population in clonal *** identified QTL controlling RSD resistance along with the associated SNP markers will assist sugarcane molecular breeding programs in combating this disease.

Seasonal, Age &Gender Variation of Guillain Barre Syndrome in a Tertiary Referral Center in India

Background: Seasonal variation & gender preponderance have not been adequately studied in Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). University of Health Sciences, Rohtak is the tertiary referral facility for a large part of North West India. We conducted a prospective study to investigate differences in GBS incidence between males and females & across different seasons of the year. Methods:65 clinically diagnosed GBS patients, aged 5 - 70 years, referred for nerve conduction, Fwave & EMG studies for 3 years. Results: 64.61% were males while 35.38% were females. Maximum patients were in the age group 5 - 20 years (46.15%). The highest incidence of GBS (41.53%) were seen in the summer months;19 (29.23%) in the spring season, 11 (16.92%) in winter season and 8 (12.30%) in rainy season. 5 patients had diarrhoea while 12 patients had flu like syndrome 1 - 2 weeks before the onset of GBS. Conclusion: The peak seasonal clustering noted by us in the summer months was consistent significantly with other Asian studies. The age and sex distribution of GBS in our series, which showed children & minor preponderance with peak incidence in 5 - 20 years age followed by another in the age group 21 - 40 years, is different from most studies which report a second peak after 50 years of age.

We obtain an exact solution for spherically symmetric Letelier AdS black holes immersed in perfect fluid dark matter(PFDM).Considering the cosmological constant as the positive pressure of the system and volume as its conjugate variable,we analyze the thermodynamics of our black holes in the extended phase *** to the background clouds of strings parameter(a)and the parameter endowed with PFDM(β),we analyze the Hawking temperature,entropy,and specific ***,we investigate the relationship between the photon sphere radius and phase transition for the Letelier AdS black holes immersed in *** the analysis,with a particular condition,non-monotonic behaviors are found between the photon sphere radius,impact parameter,PFDM parameter,temperature,and *** can regard the changes in both the photon sphere radius and impact parameter before and after phase transition as the order parameter;their critical exponents near the critical point are equal to the same value,1/2,similar to that in ordinary thermal *** indicates that a universal relation of gravity may exist near the critical point for a black hole thermodynamic system.

GUARDIAN: A Multi-Tiered Defense Architecture for Thwarting Prompt Injection Attacks on LLMs

This paper introduces a novel multi-tiered defense architecture to protect language models from adversarial prompt attacks. We construct adversarial prompts using strategies like role emulation and manipulative assistance to simulate real threats. We introduce a comprehensive, multi-tiered defense framework named GUARDIAN (Guardrails for Upholding Ethics in Language Models) comprising a system prompt filter, pre-processing filter leveraging a toxic classifier and ethical prompt generator, and pre-display filter using the model itself for output screening. Extensive testing on Meta’s Llama-2 model demonstrates the capability to block 100% of attack prompts. The approach also auto-suggests safer prompt alternatives, thereby bolstering language model security. Quantitatively evaluated defense layers and an ethical substitution mechanism represent key innovations to counter sophisticated attacks. The integrated methodology not only fortifies smaller LLMs against emerging cyber threats but also guides the broader application of LLMs in a secure and ethical manner.

Meigs syndrome(MS)is characterized by a benign ovarian tumor(fibroma),hydrothorax on the right side,and ascites;which can be resolved permanently after *** literature reveals that most MS surgeries were performed under general anesthesia(GA)[1].However,GA poses major risks to the *** the high risk of gastric content regurgitation,poor general condition or dyselectrolytemia may lead to delayed arousal,and associated multi-organ *** mechanical ventilation is also difficult due to ascites and hydrothorax(reduced cardiac output,impaired ventilation-perfusion in lungs causing hypoxia and hypercapnia)[1,2].In this letter,we report a case of MS tumor resection under the subarachnoid block(SAB)to mitigate these issues and also review the complications associated with both techniques.

A randomized controlled trial on triamcinolone versus saline impregnated merocel post endoscopic sinus surgery:Our experience in a tertiary care centre

Purpose:To assess the potential benefit of impregnating Merocel(a non-absorbable nasal dressing)with a topical steroid solution,for use as a direct and slow local delivery system of steroids after sinus surgery to improve postoperative wound ***:In this randomized controlled trial,40 patients with bilateral chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis were subjected to functional endoscopic sinus *** the completion of the surgery,Merocel packs were inserted in the bilateral nasal cavities and infiltrated with 4 mL triamcinolone(40 mg/mL)in one nasal cavity(treatment group)and 4 mL normal saline in the other(control group).Nasal packs were removed on the third postoperative day and postoperative healing assessment was done on postoperative Weeks 1,2,4,and *** findings were noted as per Lund Kennedy(LKES)and perioperative sinus endoscopy(POSE)scores and compared on both ***:Significant(P<0.05)improvement was noted in Lund Kennedy score for crusting and polyp at Week 12,for edema at Week 1,and nasal discharge at Weeks 1 and 12,but there was no significant improvement in scarring at any ***,the difference between the treatment and control arms was statistically significant at all postoperative visits except at Week ***,there was a significant improvement in POSE scores at Weeks 1,2,and 12 but not at Week ***:This study positively concludes that the nasal cavity packed with drug-soaked packs had less scarring and edema in the postoperative period and the overall wound healing was much better as compared to saline-soaked packs.

Evaluating Privacy Leakage and Memorization Attacks on Large Language Models (LLMs) in Generative AI Applications

The recent interest in the deployment of Generative AI applications that use large language models (LLMs) has brought to the forefront significant privacy concerns, notably the leakage of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and other confidential or protected information that may have been memorized during training, specifically during a fine-tuning or customization process. We describe different black-box attacks from potential adversaries and study their impact on the amount and type of information that may be recovered from commonly used and deployed LLMs. Our research investigates the relationship between PII leakage, memorization, and factors such as model size, architecture, and the nature of attacks employed. The study utilizes two broad categories of attacks: PII leakage-focused attacks (auto-completion and extraction attacks) and memorization-focused attacks (various membership inference attacks). The findings from these investigations are quantified using an array of evaluative metrics, providing a detailed understanding of LLM vulnerabilities and the effectiveness of different attacks.

Advancing frontiers in anaesthesiology with laparoscopy

The introduction of laparoscopy in the surgeon’s armamentarium was in fact a “revolution in the history of surgery”. Since this technique involves insufflation of carbon dioxide it produces several pathophysiological changes which have to be understood by the anaesthesiologist who can modify the anaesthesia technique accordingly. Advantages of laparoscopy include reduced pain, small scars and early return to work. Certain complications specific to laparoscopic surgery are due to carboperitoneum and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Venous air embolism, although very rare, can be lethal if not managed promptly. Other complications include subcutaneous emphysema, haemodynamic compromise and arrhythmias. Although associated with minimal postoperative morbidity, postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting can be quite problematic. The limitations of laparoscopy have been overcome by the introduction of robotic surgery. There are important implications for the anaesthesiologist during robotic surgeries which have to be practiced accordingly. Robotic surgery has a learning curve for both the surgeon and the anaesthesiologist. The robot is bulky, and cannot be disengaged after docking. Therefore it is important that the anaesthetized patient remains immobile throughout surgery and anaesthesia is reversed only after the robot has been disengaged at the end of surgery. Advances in laparoscopy and robotic surgery have modified anaesthetic techniques too.

Tribological response of waste tire rubber as micro-fillers in automotive brake lining materials

Elastomeric materials show promise as potential micro-fillers in brake *** can provide vibration damping and acoustic advantages in intermittent and abrupt impact applications such as *** elastomeric material can be salvaged from non-biodegradable automotive tires,thereby providing an opportunity to reuse materials that will otherwise be discarded in *** tribological and thermomechanical performances of the waste tire rubber were assessed to determine their potential for use as micro-fillers in the brake linings of commercial vehicles with a gross weight less than 16 ***,the brake lining materials were fabricated with fine waste tire rubber particulates(WTRPs)as the micro-fillers,phenolic-R resin as the binder,graphite as the dry lubricant,laterite as the co-filler,and coconut coir for natural fiber *** effects of increasing the WTRP weight fraction on the brake response of the linings were analyzed,and the different compositions were benchmarked against a commercial brake *** characterization comprising compressive strength,hardness,density,and porosity studies were carried *** and wear characteristics of the linings were analyzed using a rotary tribometer with simultaneous thermal *** manufactured lining with 15 wt%WTRPs exhibited a mean friction coefficient of^0.38,a specific volumetric loss rate of 1,662μm3/(N?m),and improved thermal *** optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)with energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),wear surface morphology studies compared the relative development of primary and secondary plateaus and revealed the redistribution of wear debris,leading to the stability of the coefficient of friction.
