This paper proposes a novel approach for the provision of non-frequency ancillary service(AS)by consumers connected to low-voltage distribution *** proposed approach considers an asymmetric pool-based local market for AS negotiation,allowing consumers to set a flexibility quantity and desired price to trade.A case study with 98 consumers illustrates the proposed market-based non-frequency AS provision ***,three different strategies of consumers’participation are implemented and tested in a real low-voltage distribution network with radial *** is shown that consumers can make a profit from the sale of their flexibility while contributing to keeping the network power losses,voltage,and current within pre-defined ***,the results demonstrate the value of AS coming directly from end-users.

Forest management for optimizing soil protection:a landscape-level approach

Background:Soil erosion is still identified as the main cause of land degradation worldwide,threatening soil functions and driving several research and policy efforts to reverse *** are commonly associated to some of the most successful land-use systems to achieve soil protection goals,but the extent to which forest ecosystems reduce erosion risks can largely depend on management decisions and associated silvicultural *** tools can assist foresters in solving the complex planning problem they face,concerning the demand for different,and often conflicting,ecosystem services.A resource capability model(RCM),based on a linear programming approach,was built and solved for a forest landscape management problem in Northwest Portugal,over a 90-years planning horizon,divided in 10-years ***:Timber provision and soil erosion were found to be in *** management alternatives included in the model were proven to be sufficiently flexible to obtain the desired level of timber yield,both in volume and even distribution along the planning horizon,while ensuring lower levels of soil loss estimates(below 35 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1)).However,under climate change conditions,compatible with an increasing greenhouse gases emission scenario,potential landscape soil erosion may be enhanced up to 46 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1) in critical ***:Soil conservation concerns in landscape-level forest management planning can be addressed by LPbased optimization *** providing an optimal management solution at landscape level,this approach enables a comprehensive analysis of the RCM,possible trade-offs and potential changes towards uncertainties.

Osmundea pinnatifida is a red edible seaweed known as pepper *** was cultivated in the farm of ALGAplus(ílhavo,Portugal).This farm is integrated with a seabream and seabass commercial aquaculture and uses the nutrient-enriched water resultant from the fish production as its cultivation medium in the integrated multi-trophic aquaculture(IMTA)*** and IMTA-cultivated samples of *** da were screened for antioxidant and antitumor *** antioxidant capacity of solvent extracts from wild and IMTA cultivated samples was assessed in two methods(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)and oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC)),and their total phenolic contents(TPC)were *** activity was evaluated in three different tumor cell lines(HepG-2,MCF-7,and SH-SY5Y)through 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)*** the solvents used for extraction,dichloromethane was the most eff ective to extract phenolic compounds and presented higher ORAC.A significant correlation was found between TPC and ORAC,which was also sustained by the principal components analysis(PCA).Dichloromethane extracts induced a cytostatic eff ect on MCF-7 cells and showed weak cytotoxicity to SH-SY5Y cells and weak impact on cell ***,there were no statistically signifi cant differences in the biological activities shown by the wild and IMTA-cultivated ***,*** can be obtained in an economical and environmentally sustainable way through IMTA,maintaining bioactive properties in a high potential for further nutraceutical purposes.

Soil contamination by toxic trace metal elements,like barium(Ba),may stimulate various undesirable changes in the metabolic activity of *** plant responses are fast and with,direct or indirect,generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).To cope with the stress imposed by the ROS production,plants developed a dual cellular system composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic players that convert ROS,and their by-products,into stable nontoxic *** assess the Ba stress response of two Brassicaceae species(Brassica juncea,a glycophyte,and Cakile maritime,a halophyte),plants were exposure to different Ba concentrations(0,100,200,300 and 500µM).The plants response was evaluated through their morphology and development,the determination of plant leaves antioxidant enzymatic activities and by the production of plants secondary *** indicated that the two Brassicaceae species have the ability to survive in an environment containing Ba(even at 500µM).The biomass production of *** was slightly affected whereas an increase in biomass *** was *** stress imposed by Ba activated the antioxidant defense system in the two species,noticed by the changes in the leaves activity of catalase(CAT),ascorbate peroxidase(APX)and guaicol peroxidase(GPX),and of the secondary metabolites,through the production of total phenols and *** enzymatic response was not similar within the two plant species:CAT and APX seem to have a more important role against the oxidative stress in *** while in *** is ***,total phenols and flavonoids production was more significant in the plants aerial part than in the roots,of the both *** the two Brassicaceae species response was different,in both plants catalytic and non-catalytic transformation of ROS occurs,and both were able to overcome the Ba toxicity and prevent the cell damage.

The Biotechnological and Seafood Potential of Stichopus regalis

Sea cucumbers are highly used not only for the production of the bêche-de-mer, but also recent studies have been showing the high potential of these marine invertebrates on the pharmaceutical industry, as they are rich in bioactive compounds with important functions. Stichopus regalis extracts (1 mg·mL-1) were used in antioxidant, antimicrobial and antitumor assays. The lipid profile was also evaluated. No significant antioxidant activity was detected in both methanolic and dichloromethane extracts. The methanolic fraction showed the highest antimicrobial potential against Candida albicans with an IC50 of 475.4 μg·mL-1. In the antitumor assays, the dichloromethane fraction showed a high potential for both cell lines, as revealed by the MTT method. The total fat content was 3.63% ± 0.11% and the fatty acid profile revealed the highest amount in C16:0 (9.43% ± 0.77%), C18:0 (12.43% ± 0.83%), C18:1 ω7 (5.63% ± 0.33%), EPA (12.49% ± 0.15%), DHA (7.35% ± 0.02%), ARA (19.29% ± 0.14%) and a ω3/ω6 ratio of 1.078. These findings led us to suggest the potential use of S. regalis as a new source of bioactive compounds with pharmacological potential and its nutritional benefits for human health.
