“Obesity is a disease.” This is the declaration by the Am.rican m.dical Association in June, 2013. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of options for patients who m.et the criteria of obesity. Prim.ry care nurse practitioners are urged to confront obesity head on, with early, individualized intervention to reduce associated m.rbidity and m.rtality. Options for weight loss and m.intenance are abundant and often confusing or unattractive to the patient. Working with patients to achieve realistic, reasonable, and patient-tailored goals for weight loss and exercise program. are param.unt to achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle.

Latina m.thers feeding their children: A focus group pilot study

The purpose of this study was to better understand current knowledge of health and nutrition, barriers to im.roving eating habits, and preferences for school-based interventions am.ng low-incom. Latina m.thers. Qualitative research m.thods and analysis were em.loyed. Eighteen m.thers of preschool-aged children participated in a focus group interview. Findings indicate that m.thers have an understanding of healthy eating, but identified issues with connecting food with weight and in understanding definitions of “obese”. Further, respondents identified barriers to incorporating healthier foods and cooking m.thods into daily life, due to fam.ly food preferences, cultural practices, and schedules. m.ther’s concerns about the future weight and the health of their children appeared to m.tivate interest in im.roving feeding behaviors. Desired interventions of m.thers highlight the im.ortance of culturally relative solutions to behavior change towards healthy eating.
