Assessment of surface and subsurface waterlogging, water level fluctuations, and lithological variations for evaluating groundwater resources in Ganga Plains

In the present study,the multi-temporal satellite images of IRS P6 LISS III were used to map waterlogging dynamics over different seasons.An area of 594.36 km2(6.75%)and 4.17 km^(2)(0.04%)was affected by surface waterlogging during pre and postmonsoon season,respectively.The average annual groundwater level fluctuations were calculated using 18 years(1990-2007)pre and postmonsoon groundwater level data to identify the areas which are under groundwater induced waterlogging conditions.The soil map clearly indicates that salinity and sodicity exhibit the highest severity and occur in areas with shallow groundwater levels.The hydrogeomorphical units mapped using IRS P6 LISS III satellite images are flood plain,alluvial plain,paleochannels,and oxbow lakes.The study revealed that 44.65%areas have very good to excellent groundwater resources.The litholog data clearly indicate an alternating sequence of clay and sand in which deep aquifers made up of coarse sand would be best suited for adequate water supply and good groundwater quality.The integrated study utilizing digital spatial data pertaining to waterlogging,soil salinity,water level fluctuation,and lithological variation proved that planning of any surface and subsurface water resources development activity should be taken up after assessments of said parameters.

River bankline migration is a frequent phenomenon in the river of the floodplain region.Nowadays,channel dynamics-related changes in land use and land cover(LULC)are becoming a risk to the life and property of people living in the vicinity of rivers.A comprehensive evaluation of the causes and consequences of such changes is essential for better policy and decision-making for disaster risk reduction and management.The present study assesses the changes in the Brahmaputra River planform using the GIS-based Digital Shoreline Analysis System(DSAS)and relates it with the changing LULC of the floodplain evaluated using the CA-Markov model.In this study,the future channel of the Brahmaputra River and its flood plain’s future LULC were forecasted to pinpoint the erosion-vulnerable zone.Forty-eight years(1973–2021)of remotely sensed data were applied to estimate the rate of bankline migration.It was observed that the river’s erosion-accretion rate was higher in early times than in more recent ones.The left and right banks’average shifting rates between 1973 and 1988 were -55.44 m/y and -56.79 m/y,respectively,while they were-17.25 m/y and -48.49 m/y from 2011 to 2021.The left bank of the river Brahmaputra had more erosion than the right,which indicates that the river is shifting in the leftward direction(Southward).In this river course,zone A(Lower course)and zone B(Middle course)were more adversely affected than zone C(Upper course).According to the predicted result,the left bank is more susceptible to bank erosion than the right bank(where the average rate of erosion and deposition was -72.23 m/y and 79.50 m/y,respectively).The left bank’s average rate of erosion was -111.22 m/y.The research assesses the LULC study in conjunction with river channel dynamics in vulnerable areas where nearby infrastructure and settlements were at risk due to channel migration.The degree of accu-racy was verified using the actual bankline and predicted bankline,as well as the actual LULC map and anticipated LULC map.In more than 90% of ca

The overzealous and indiscriminate use of most of the synthetic fungicides has created different types of environmental and toxicological problems. Recently, in different parts of the world, attention has been paid towards exploitation of higher plant products as novel chemotherapeutants in plant protection. The popularity of botanical pesticides is once again increasing and some plant products are being used globally as green pesticides. Pyrethroids and neem products are well established commercially as botanical pesticides and recently some essential oils of higher plants have also been used as antimicrobials against storage pests because of their relatively safe status and wide acceptance by the consumers. Some of the volatile oils, which often contain the principal aromatic and flavouring components of herbs and spices, have been recommended as plant based antimicrobials to retard microbial contamination and reduction in spoilage of food commodities. In the context of agricultural pest management, botanical pesticides are best suited for use in organic food production in industrialized countries but can play a much greater role in the production and post harvest protection of food products in developing countries.

Dear Editor,We read with great interest the recently published article titled“Observation of peripheral refraction in myopic anisometropia in young adults”by Du et al[1].The study conducted at the InEye Hospital of Chengdu University of TCM provides valuable insights into the relationship between anisometropia and peripheral refraction in myopic young adults.We commend the authors for their thorough investigation and adherence to ethical guidelines.While the study contributes significantly to our understanding of myopic anisometropia,we would like to draw attention to some limitations that merit consideration for a comprehensive interpretation of the findings.

Precipitable Water Vapor(PWV)constitutes a pivotal parameter within the domains of atmospheric science,and remote sensing due to its profound influence on Earth’s climate dynamics and weather patterns.It exerts a significant impact on atmospheric stability absorption and emission of radiation,thus engendering alterations in the Earth’s radiative equilibrium.As such,precise quantification of PWV holds the potential to enhance weather prognostication and fortify preparedness against severe meteorological phenomena.This study aimed to elucidate the spatial and temporal changes in seasonal and annual PWV across the Indus River Basin and its sub-basins using ERA5 reanalysis datasets.The present study used ERA5 PWV(entire atmospheric column),air temperature at 2 m(t2m)and 500 hPa(T_500hPa),evapotranspiration,and total cloud cover data from 1960 to 2021.Theil Sen slope estimator and Mann-Kendall test were used for trend analysis.Correlation and multiple regression methods were used to understand the association of PWV with other factors.The findings have unveiled the highest increase in mean PWV during the monsoon(0.40 mm/decade),followed by premonsoon(0.37 mm/decade),post-monsoon(0.27 mm/decade),and winter(0.19 mm/decade)throughout the study period.Additionally,the mean PWV exhibited the most pronounced positive trend in the sub-basin Lower Indus(LI),followed by Panjnad(P),Kabul(K),and Upper Indus(UI)across all seasons,except winter.Annual PWV has also risen in the Indus basin and its sub-basins over the last six decades.PWV exhibits a consistent upward trend up to an elevation of 3500 m within the basin which is most pronounced during the monsoon season,followed by the pre-monsoon.The escalating PWV within the basin is reasonably ascribed to increasing air temperatures,augmented evapotranspiration,and heightened cloud cover.These findings hold potential utility for pertinent authorities engaged in water resource management and planning.

BACKGROUND The presence of dens invaginatus(DI)complicates treatment of any tooth,from diagnosis to access cavity and biomechanical preparation and obturation.Reports of successful non-surgical management of DI type IIIB in maxillary lateral incisor are rare.Here,we report such a case,with three root canals and a long follow-up.CASE SUMMARY A 13-year-old female patient presented with mild pain in the maxillary right lateral incisor(#7)for 10-15 d.On examination,the tooth was slightly rotated,with slight tenderness on percussion and grade I mobility but with no caries,pockets or restorations and non-vital pulp(via vitality tests).Radiographic examination revealed unusual configuration of the tooth’s root canals,with an enamel-lined invagination extending to the apex,suggesting the possibility of DI Oehler’s type IIIB and a periapical radiolucency.Widening the access cavity lingually revealed one distinct buccal orifice and two distinct palatal orifices;under higher magnification of a dental operating microscope(DOM),the mesio palatal and disto-palatal orifices were observed as connected by a C-shaped groove.The root canals were prepared with hand K-files following a step-back technique,and obturated using a combination technique of lateral condensation and vertical compaction.At the 6-year follow-up,the patient was asymptomatic,and the periapical radiography displayed significant healing around the apical end of the root.CONCLUSION Proper knowledge of unusual root canal anatomy is required in treating DI.Conventional methods of root canal treatment can successfully resolve such complex cases,facilitated by DOM and cone-beam computed tomography.

Tourism industry has become an important part of Indian economy,and tourism development has been,however,concentrated to a few areas. Accumulation of tourism activities has reached the critical stage in most of the tourism centers,which pose serious threats to the natural environment. The Bhyundar Valley of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR) in Uttarakhand State of the Indian Himalaya is a burning example of such problems. Land use/cover changes,deforestation and accumulation of garbage are some of the negative impacts of unregulated tourism in the valley. Unsustainable activities of tourists and villagers in the valley make such problems very severe. To deal with the ongoing problems and ensure community involvement in tourism management and environmental conservation,the Biosphere Reserve Authority introduced ecotourism in the form of Eco Development Committees (EDCs) in the Bhyundar Valley. Study reveals that many problems associated with tourism have been minimized to some extent with the help of EDCs but few are still prevailing in valley. However,the existing attempts to conserve the valley from the negative effects of tourism are inadequate and modifications are needed in the current initiatives.

Land surface temperature(LST)is a crucial parameter for understanding the Earth's surface energy balance,which provides insights into climate dynamics and local environmental conditions.Thus,the present study aims to evaluate the spatial and elevation-wise trends in the daytime,nighttime,and mean LST across the Indus River Basin(IRB)using MODIS 8-day product for the period between 2002 and 2022.The elevation,cloud cover,and land cover type data are used for explaining the emerging LST trends.The Theil slope estimator and MannKendall significance test were used for estimating the seasonal and annual LST trends.The findings show warming in mean daytime(0.020-0.024℃/yr)(except winter and post-monsoon),nighttime(0.013-0.049℃/yr),and mean(0.001-0.042℃/yr)LST in all the seasons(highest in monsoon).The annual mean nighttime LST(0.025℃/yr)is rising significantly faster than the mean daytime LST(0.0016℃/yr),showing the presence of a“nighttime warming effect”,which possibly increases human discomfort,particularly during the warm pre-monsoon and humid monsoon season.Elevation-dependent warming(EDW)is predominant in mean daytime LST in two elevation zones,namely(i)0-3 km and(ii)above 4 km,in all seasons,except in post-monsoon.In contrast,EDW in mean nighttime LST is observed up to 3 km and above 6 km in the basin in all the seasons,excluding post-monsoon.The warming trend in LST may be attributed to rising atmospheric moisture,cloud cover,declining snow cover,and changes in land cover to non-vegetated land.However,further investigations will involve exploring the underlying factors contributing to the observed anomalies in nighttime LST,considering variables such as regional energy balance and atmospheric stability.This research contributes to an understanding of the thermal dynamics in the mountain basin,aiding in climate studies,land management,and the development of effective adaptation strategies in the IRB.

The blasting operation plays a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines.The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated sub-systems,i.***.loading,transport,crushing and milling operations.Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity are the challenging tasks for practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole,varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic.This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at three mines in India.The mines use draglines and shoveledumper combination for removal of overburden.Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation,the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative which results in very subjective assessment of blasting performance.Such an approach is very poor substitutes for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance.Ninety one blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns,and their impacts on the rock fragmentation were documented.A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts.The efficiency of the loading machines was also correlated with the mean fragment size obtained from the fragmentation analyses.
