Timing of chemotherapy and survival in patients with resectable gastric adenocarcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the timing of chemotherapy in gastric cancer by comparing survival outcomes in treatment groups. METHODs: Patients with surgically resected gastric adenocarcinoma from 1988 to 2006 were identified from the Los Angeles County Cancer surveillance Program. To evaluate the population most likely to receive and/or benefit from adjunct chemotherapy, inclusion criteria consisted of stage Ⅱ or Ⅲ gastric cancer patients > 18 years of age who underwent curative-intentsurgical resection. Patients were categorized into three groups according to the receipt of chemotherapy:(1) no chemotherapy;(2) preoperative chemotherapy; or(3) postoperative chemotherapy. Clinical and pathologic characteristics were compared across the different treatment ***: Of 1518 patients with surgically resected gastric cancer, 327(21.5%) received perioperative chemotherapy. The majority of these 327 patients were male(68%) with a mean age of 61.5 years; and they were significantly younger than non-chemotherapy patients(mean age, 70.7; P st patients had tumors frequently located in the distal stomach(34.5%). Preoperative chemotherapy was administered to 11.3% of patients(n = 37) and postoperative therapy to 88.7% of patients(n = 290). An overall survival benefit according to timing of chemotherapy was not observed on univariate or multivariate analysis. similar results were observed with stagespecific survival analyses(5-year overall survival: stage Ⅱ, 25% vs 30%, respectively; stage Ⅲ, 14% vs 11%, respectively). Therefore, our results do not identify a survival advantage for specific timing of chemotherapy in locally advanced gastric cancer. CONCLUsION: This study supports the implementation of a randomized trial comparing the timing of perioperative therapy in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer.

Carbon stock and rate of carbon sequestration in Dipterocarpus forests of Manipur,Northeast India

We examined the carbon stock and rate of carbon sequestration in a tropical deciduous forest dominated by Dipterocarpus tuberculatus in Manipur,North East *** of aboveground biomass was determined by harvest method and multiplied with density of tree *** aboveground biomass was between18.27–21.922 t ha-1and the carbon stock ranged from9.13 to 10.96 t C ha-1across forest *** biomass and carbon stock increased with the increase in tree *** rate of carbon sequestration varied from1.4722 to 4.64136 t ha-1year-1among the dominant tree species in forest stands in tropical deciduous forest *** rate of carbon sequestration depends on species composition,the density of large trees in different girth classes,and anthropogenic disturbances in the present forest *** work is required to identify tree species having the highest potential to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere,which could lead to recommendations for tree plantations in a degraded ecosystem.

Aboveground biomass and net primary production of semi-evergreen tropical forest of Manipur, north-eastern India

The aboveground biomass dynamics and net primary productivity were investigated to assess the productive potential of Diptero- carpus forest in Manipur, Northeast India. Two forest stands （stand Ⅰ and Ⅱ） were earmarked randomly in the study site for the evaluation of biomass in the different girth classes of tree species by harvest method. The total biomass was 22.50 ***^-1 and 18.27 ***^-1 in forest stand I and II respectively. Annual aboveground net primary production varied from 8.86 to 10.43 ***^-1 respectively in two forest stands （stand Ⅰ and Ⅱ）. In the present study, the values of production efficiency and the biomass accumulation ratio indicate that the forest is at succession stage with high productive potential.

Role of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics in management of inflammatory bowel disease: Current perspectives

Experimental evidence supports the fact that changes in the bowel microflora due to environmental or dietary factors have been investigated as implicating factors in the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).The amassing knowledge that the inhabited microbiome regulates the gut physiology and immune functions in IBD,has led researchers to explore the effectiveness of prebiotics,probiotics,and synbiotics in treating *** therapeutic approach focuses on restoring the dynamic balance between the microflora and host defense mechanisms in the intestinal mucosa to prevent the onset and persistence of intestinal *** microbial strains and carbohydrate blends,along with their combinations have been examined in experimental colitis models and clinical trials,and the results indicated that it can be an attractive therapeutic strategy for the suppression of inflammation,remission induction,and relapse prevention in IBD with minimal side *** mechanisms of action of probiotics(for e.g.,Lactobacillus species,and Bifidobacterium species)have been reported such as suppression of pathogen growth by releasing certain antimicrobial mediators(lactic and hydrogen peroxide,acetic acid,and bacteriocins),immunomodulation and initiation of an immune response,enhancement of barrier activity,and suppression of human T-cell *** such as lactulose,lactosucrose,oligofructose,and inulin have been found to induce the growth of certain types of host microflora,resulting in an enriched enteric *** non-digestible food dietary components have been reported to exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α-related cytokines while augmenting interleukin-10 *** proand prebiotics has established their efficacy in healthy subjects,a better understanding of the luminal ecosystem is required to determine which specific bacterial strain or combination of probiotics and prebiotics

Internet of Things(IoT)and blockchain receive significant interest owing to their applicability in different application areas such as healthcare,finance,transportation,*** image security and privacy become a critical part of the healthcare sector where digital images and related patient details are communicated over the public *** paper presents a new wind driven optimization algorithm based medical image encryption(WDOA-MIE)technique for blockchain enabled IoT *** WDOA-MIE model involves three major processes namely data collection,image encryption,optimal key generation,and data ***,the medical images were captured from the patient using IoT ***,the captured images are encrypted using signcryption *** addition,for improving the performance of the signcryption technique,the optimal key generation procedure was applied by WDOA *** goal of the WDOA-MIE algorithm is to derive a fitness function dependent upon peak signal to noise ratio(PsNR).Upon successful encryption of images,the IoT devices transmit to the closest server for storing it in the blockchain *** performance of the presented method was analyzed utilizing the benchmark medical image *** security and the performance analysis determine that the presented technique offers better security with maximum PsNR of 60.7036 dB.

It is know from literature that small additions(significantly improve the intrinsic ductility of *** exact role of each element,both qualitatively and quantitatively,and their combined effects,however,are poorly *** we achieved a much clearer view on the quantitative role of each element with respect to ductility improvement and on the collaborative effect,particularly of Ca and Zn in *** of our findings and conclusions are in disagreement with data and interpretation found in *** different alloys,namely,Mg-0.1 Ca,Mg-0.1 Ca-1 Al,Mg-0.05 Ca-1 Al,Mg-0.1 Ca-2 Al-1 Zn(all are in wt%)were selected for this *** alloys were treated such that *** grain sizes and textures were *** largely excludes the effect of extrinsic factors on ***-guided slip trace analyses reveal that the addition of Ca eases activation of prismatic and pyramidal II slip *** in-situ deformation experiments in sEM and atom probe tomography observations of grain boundaries direct evidence is given for the individual and synergetic effects of Ca and Zn on grain boundary cohesion as an important contribution to improve the ductility of these *** conclude that Ca reduces the slip anisotropy and ameliorates ductility,however,the weak grain boundary cohesion in the Mg-0.1 wt%Ca alloy limits the material’s tensile *** addition of Zn alters the Ca segregation at the grain boundaries and helps to retain their cohesive strength,an effect which thus enables higher ductility and *** further addition of Al primarily improves the *** results show that the balanced influence of reduced slip anisotropy on the one hand and increased grain boundary cohesion on the other hand allow to design a high strength high ductility rare-earth free Mg alloy.

On-Line Defect Detection of Aluminum Coating Using Fiber Optic sensor

Aluminum metallization using the sprayed coating for exhaust mild steel （Ms） pipes of tractors is a standard practice for avoiding rusting. Patches of thin metal coats are prone to rusting and are thus considered as defects in the surface coating. This paper reports a novel configuration of the fiber optic sensor for on-line checking the aluminum metaUization uniformity and hence for defect detection. An optimally chosen high bright 440 nm BLUE LED （light-emitting diode） launches light into a transmitting fiber inclined at the angle of 60° to the surface under inspection placed adequately. The reflected light is transported by a receiving fiber to a blue enhanced photo detector. The metallization thickness on the coated surface results in visually observable variation in the gray shades. The coated pipe is spirally inspected by a combination of linear and rotary motions. The sensor output is the signal conditioned and monitored with RIsHUBH DAs. Experimental results show the good repeatability in the defect detection and coating non-uniformity measurement.

Modeling, simulation and Experimental studies of Refractometric Fiber Optic sensor

Refractometric fiber optic sensors have a number of applications in industry due to advantages like remote sensing ability, compact size, easy to fit, etc. A refractometric sensor contains a pair of parallel fibers and a gap between the sensor probe and reflector, wherein the liquid whose refractive index is to be measured is filled. This paper describes the importance of mathematical modeling of this sensor. Ray tracing approach is used to model the sensor mathematically. This mathematical model is generalized for any scenario which is useful to avoid tedious trial and error techniques to design the sensor prototype. Mathematical modelling is a useful tool to optimize the gap distance for a detection of refractive index of liquid. The model is developed and analyzed rigorously considering adulteration of diesel by kerosene where refractive index varies from 1.44 to 1.46. simulation experiments are carried out to optimize the gap distance which is found to be 6.8 mm using both models. Experiments are carried out where sensor probe is fabricated and results are analyzed. It is observed that for suggested gap distance sensor output varies almost linear over the entire range.
