LiF@SiO2 nanocapsules for controlled lithium release and osteoarthritis treatment

Electrolytes can be taken orally or intravenously as supplements or thera- peutics. However, their therapeutic window may exceed the serum toxicity threshold, making systemic delivery a poor option. Local injection is also not adequate due to rapid diffusion of electrolytes. Here, we solved this issue with a nanocapsule technolog~ comprising an electrolyte nanocrystal as the drug filling and a silica sheath to regulate drug release rates. In particular, we prepared LiF@SiO2 nanocapsules and investigated their potential as a delivery system for lithium, which was shown in recent studies to be an effective therapeutic agent for osteoarthritis （OA）. We demonstrated that LiF@SiO2 can extend lithium release time from minutes to more than 60 h. After intra- articular （i.a.） injection into a rat OA model, the nanocapsules reduced the Osteoarthritis Research Society International （OARSI） score by 71% in 8 weeks while inducing no systemic toxicity. Our study opens new doors for improved delivery of electrolyte therapeutics, which have rarely been studied in the past.

采用在炭纤维束的内部浸润熔融沥青的传统方法制备得到的炭/炭(C/C)复合材料难以实现细旦化水平,这是因为单束丝中含有数千根丝,经浸渍后沥青附着,从而引起沥青局部渗出,以及因不均匀沥青稳定性而导致微观结构不均匀。本文通过稳定的中间相沥青和分散的短切炭纤维混合、热压和炭化过程制备出细旦化水平的C/C复合材料。探讨了工艺参数对中间相沥青残炭率的影响。通过残炭率/工艺时间、残炭率!(表观密度/实密度)来优化工艺参数。结果表明,通过此法得到了细旦化水平的中间相沥青与炭纤维复合材料。中间相沥青的残炭率随加热升温速率、沥青/炭纤维质量比的增加而降低;随热压压力而增加。在高压力和高质量比下,发生沥青局部渗出。通过调控得到最佳的C/C复合材料制备工艺参数为:热压压力15 MPa,升温速率0. 2℃/min及沥青/炭纤维质量比1∶1。

The emergence of"Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)"caused by the novel coronavirus(COVID-19)had its origin in Wuhan,China,in November-December *** May 27,2021,the pandemic has affected over 220 countries,with 169,094,393 coronavirus cases and 23,512,509 deaths[1].India reported its first case of COVID-19 infection on January 30,2020[2].The rise of COVID-19 cases brought a barrage of many unforeseen problems for cancer patients and health care ***,a robust and systematic policy must be followed for the cancer facility's smooth ***,India has 273,67,935 cases with 3,15,263 deaths as on March 27,2021[3].The second wave in India started from March 2021 and continued till August 2021 with a peak patient peak load of approximately 4 lacks of new cases in early May *** Third wave started in late November 2021 and is still continuing and in weaning *** and Omicron variant were the majority strains during 2nd and 3rd wave respectively.

Load-Bearing Capacity of the Footing Resting on a Reinforced Fly Ash Slope

In several parts of the world, disposal of waste materials such as fly ash is a great problem. Application of waste materials as structural fills in foundations is one of the best solutions to disposal problems, because wastes can be used in large volumes in such applications. There may be difficulty due to poor load-bearing capacity of fly ash, especially when footing rests on the top of the fly ash fill slope. Inclusion of polymeric reinforcements as horizontal sheets within the fill may be one of the most viable solutions to improving the load-bearing capacity of reinforced fly ash slope, and it is particularly important for the situations where foundations need to be located either on the top of a slope or on slope itself. The present work is aimed at investigating the efficacy of a single layer of reinforcement in improving the lo, ad-bearing capacity when it gets incorporated within the body of a model fly ash embankment slope. An increase in load bearing capacity due to the incorporation of reinforcement in the model slope was found by conducting laboratory tests. Experimental results were compared by numerical values obtained using software GEO5 and PLAXIS.

Mode of interaction of calcium oxalate crystal with human phosphate cytidylyltransferase 1: a novel inhibitor purified from human renal stone matrix

Nephrolithiasis is a common clinical disorder, and calcium oxalate (CaOx) is the principal crystalline component in approximately 75% of all renal stones. It is widely believed that proteins act as inhibitors of crystal growth and aggregation. Acidic amino acids present in these proteins play a significant role in the inhibition process. In this study, interaction of cal-cium oxalate with human phosphate cytidylyltrans-ferase 1(CCT), a novel calcium oxalate crystal growth inhibitor purified from human renal stone matrix has been elucidated in silico and involvement of acidic amino acids in the same. As only sequence of CCT is available, henceforth its 3-D structure was modeled via Homology modeling using Prime module of Schrodinger package. Molecular dynamic simulation of modeled protein with solvation was done by mac-romodel (Schrodinger). The quality of modeled pro-tein was validated by JCSG protein structure valida-tion (PROCHECK & ERRAT) server. To analyze the interaction of modeled protein CCT with calcium oxalate along with role played by acidic amino acids, ‘Docking simulation’ was done using MOE–Dock. Interaction between calcium oxalate and CCT was also studied by substituting acidic amino acid in the active sites of the protein with neutral and positively charged amino acids. The in silico analysis showed the bond formation between the acidic amino acids and calcium atom, which was further substantiated when substitution of these acidic amino acids with alanine, glycine, lysine, arginine and histidine com-pletely diminished the interaction with calcium ox-alate.

Clinical outcome of orbital apex syndrome in COVID associated mucormycosis patients in a tertiary care hospital

AIM: To share clinical pattern of presentation, the modalities of surgical intervention and the one month postsurgical outcome of rhino-orbito-mucormycosis(ROCM) ***: All COVID associated mucormycosis(CAM) patients underwent comprehensive multidisciplinar y examination by ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist and physician. Patients with clinical and radiological evidence of orbital apex involvement were included in the study. Appropriate medical and surgical intervention were done to each patient. Patients were followed up one-month post intervention. RESULTS: Out of 89 CAM patients, 31(34.8%) had orbital apex syndrome. Sixty-six(74.2%) of such patients had pre-existing diabetes mellitus, 18(58%) patients had prior documented use of steroid use, and 55(61.8%) had no light perception(LP) presenting vision. Blepharoptosis, proptosis, complete ophthalmoplegia were common clinical findings. Seventeen(19.1%) of such patients had variable amount of cavernous sinus involvement. Endoscopic debridement of paranasal sinuses and orbit with or without eyelid sparing limited orbital exenteration was done in most cases, 34(38.2%) patients could retain vision in the affected eye. CONCLUSION: Orbital apex involvement in CAM patients occur very fast. It not only leads to loss of vision but also sacrifice of the eyeball, orbital contents and eyelids. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention can preserve life, vision and spare mutilating surgeries.

A Rare Case of Fracture of Radius Associated with Dislocation of Both Distal and Proximal Radio-Ulnar Joint

Single bone forearm fractures are usually associated with dislocation of one radio-ulnar joint. The association of ulnar fractures with dislocation of proximal radio-ulnar joint and radius fractures with distal radio-ulnar joint is well described. Classically they are better known as Monteggia and Galeazzi fracture dislocations respectively. These peculiar presentations are attributed to intricate relationship of the forearm bones joined together as a unit by two radio-ulnar joints at proximal and distal ends and the interosseous membrane in the middle part. However, simultaneous dislocation of the both radio-ulnar joints associated with fracture of single bone is a very rare event. Literature search does not reveal a single case of such type. We are presenting here a case of fracture shaft of radius associated with dislocation of both proximal and distal radio-ulnar joints. The patient was managed by open reduction and fixation of the radius by a compression plate and the dislocations were reduced by closed method and stabilized with small K wires.
