Notch1 and Notch4 are markers for poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND: Notch signaling is critical to physiologic angiogenesis and has been implicated in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Notch signaling was reported to exert either oncogenic or tumor-suppressive function in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumorigenesis. However, the prognostic significance of Notch receptors in HCC remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated the roles of Notch receptors in the prognosis of HCC. METHODS: We investigated the expressions of Notch receptors in tumor tissue microarrays of 288 patients with primary HCC who had undergone curative resection using immunohistochemistry. Additionally, prognostic factors of HCC were examined by univariate and multivariate analyses. The median follow-up period was 97.1 months. Tumor recurrence was detected in 189 patients (65.6%), and 99 (34.4%) died of HCC. RESULTS: Cytoplasmic expression of Notch1, cytoplasmic expression of Notch3, coexistent nuclear expression of Notch3, and cytoplasmic Notch4 overexpression were observed in 145 (50.3%), 60 (20.8%), 17 (5.9%), and 172 (59.7%) of the 288 HCCs, respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that Notch1 expression (P=0.029), Edmondson grade Ⅲ (P=0.038), and higher BCLC stage (P<0.001) were independent predictors of shorter disease-free survival. Cytoplasmic Notch3 expression tended to be an independent predictor of shorter disease-free survival (P=0.055). Notch1 expression (P=0.039), Notch4 overexpression (P=0.012), and higher BCLC stage (P<0.001) were independent predictors of shorter disease-specific survival. On univariate analysis, Notch1 expression tended to show an unfavorable influence on disease-specific survival (P=0.063) and Notch4 overexpression did not show an unfavorable influence on disease-specific survival (P=0.103). CONCLUSIONS: Notch1 expression might be an independent predictor of both shorter disease-free survival and shorter disease-specific survival in HCC patients after curative resection. OBJECTIVE:To investigated the characteristics of patients with functional dyspepsia(FD)in terms of Sasang constitutional ***:A total of 116 patients with FD were recruited based on diagnosis by gastroscopy and symptomatic *** distributions of Sasang constitutions and six syndromes in terms of TKM theory in the patients was compared with those from 1423 healthy ***:The distribution of Sasang constitutions for the patients with FD significantly differed from that for healthy subjects,especially among women;36.7%vs 45.6%for Taeumin,28.9%vs 33.9%for Soumin,and 34.4%vs 20.4%for *** results assumed a high prevalence in Soyangin women(around 1.7 folds),and Soumin(45.2%),inparticular,had a high prevalence of"deficiency and coldness of spleen and stomach"compared with Taeumin(14.9%)and Soyangin types(15.7%).CONCLUSION:This study identified a trend for the frequency of FD and the Sasang *** findings may provide new ideas for the study of prevention and management of FD.

Analysis of interval constants in calendars affiliated with the Shoushili

We study interval constants that are related to motions of the Sun and Moon, i.e., the Qi, Intercalation, Revolution and Crossing interval, in calendars affiliated with the Shoushi calendar （Shoushili）, such as Datongli and Chiljeongsannaepyeon. It is known that these interval constants were newly introduced in the Shoushili calendar and revised afterward, except for the Qi interval constant, and the revised values were adopted in later calendars affiliated with the Shoushili. We first investigate the accu- racy of these interval constants and then the accuracy of calendars affiliated with the Shoushili in terms of these constants by comparing times for the new moon and the maximum solar eclipse calculated by each calendar with modem methods of calcula- tion. During our study, we found that the Qi and Intercalation interval constants used in the early Shoushili were well determined, whereas the Revolution and Crossing interval constants were relatively poorly measured. We also found that the interval constants used by the early Shoushili were better than those of the later one, and hence better than those of Datongli and Chiljeongsannaepyeon. On the other hand, we found that the early Shoushili is, in general, a worse calendar than Datongli for use in China but a better one than Chiljeongsannaepyeon for use in Korea in terms of times for the new moon and when a solar eclipse occurs, at least for the period 1281 - 1644. Finally, we verified that the times for sunrise and sunset in the Shoushili-Li-Cheng and Mingshi are those at Beijing and Nanjing, respectively.

The problem of packing circles into a domain of prescribed topology is considered. The circles need not have equal radii. The Collins-Stephenson algorithm computes such a circle packing. This algorithm is parMlelized in two different ways and its performance is reported for a triangular, planar domain test case. The implementation uses the highly parallel graphics processing unit （GPU） on commodity hardware. The speedups so achieved are discussed based on a number of experiments.

We review the recent progress in the study of topological phases in systems with space–time inversion symmetry *** an anti-unitary symmetry which is local in momentum space and satisfies I2 ST= 1 such as PT in two dimensions(2 D)and three dimensions(3 D) without spin–orbit coupling and C2 T in 2 D with or without spin–orbit coupling, where P, T, C2 indicate the inversion, time-reversal, and two-fold rotation symmetries, respectively. Under IST, the Hamiltonian and the periodic part of the Bloch wave function can be constrained to be real-valued, which makes the Berry curvature and the Chern number vanish. In this class of systems, gapped band structures of real wave functions can be topologically distinguished by the Stiefel–Whitney numbers instead. The first and second Stiefel–Whitney numbers w1 and w2, respectively,are the corresponding invariants in 1 D and 2 D, which are equivalent to the quantized Berry phase and the Z2 monopole charge, respectively. We first describe the topological phases characterized by the first Stiefel–Whitney number, including1 D topological insulators with quantized charge polarization, 2 D Dirac semimetals, and 3 D nodal line semimetals. Next we review how the second Stiefel–Whitney class characterizes the 3 D nodal line semimetals carrying a Z2 monopole *** particular, we explain how the second Stiefel–Whitney number w2, the Z2 monopole charge, and the linking number between nodal lines are related. Finally, we review the properties of 2 D and 3 D topological insulators characterized by the nontrivial second Stiefel Whitney class.

Because frit bonding material is brittle, sudden impacts such as dropping may damage the bonding significantly. Strain-rate-controlled in-situ nano-indentation testing, which can determine localized material properties, was carried out on the frit-bonded specimen, especially on the frit bonding matrix and the filler. The results were compared with the drop-impact fracture behavior to understand the fracture characteristics. Mechanical properties at static condition or low strain rate did not show proper relationship with the fracture tendency of the drop tested result of the frit bonding. From the relationship between fracture toughness and the ratio of modulus/hardness, fracture characteristics at the drop impact situation could be estimated by the values at the high strain rate nano-indentation. The ratio between modulus and hardness on frit matrix showed close relationship with drop impact fracture. Though crack propagation path deflected at filler interface, filler property gave less influence on fracture tendency of drop impact fracture due to its small volume fraction. The properties of frit matrix were crucial to the fracture characteristics of the frit bonding.

Transient elastography (TE) is a new non-invasive tool for assessing liver stiffness, which is correlated with the histologic stage of liver fibrosis. Many studies have reported a good accuracy of TE in predicting signif icant fibrosis and an optimal accuracy in predicting cirrhosis. Furthermore, the potential role of TE in screening the general population has also been proven. TE thus helps physicians to decide treatment strategies, predict prog-nosis, and monitor disease progression in patients with chronic liver disease and to screen the general popula-tion to identify high risk patients with potential liver disease. However, most data on the clinical roles of TE have been gathered in European patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC), because TE was first developed in France. Accordingly, much data on the usefulness of TE in patients with CHC has accumulated. Recently, however, vigorous efforts have been made to apply TEto patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and TE has also proved to have acceptable accuracy in diagnosing liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in these patients. Thus, we focused on TE in the Asian population with CHB in comparison with the European population with CHC and found that the diagnostic performance and cutoff values were different between the 2 populations possibly as a result of several different confounders between Asian and European populations (the etiology of chronic liver disease, histologic features, major fluctuation in alanine aminotransferase levels, and the prevalence of high body mass index and metabolic syndrome). Therefore, further studies tailored to the Asian population with CHB should be performed before the widespread application of TE in Asian populations with CHB.

Background:The wealth effect of limiting shareholder rights via anti-takeover provisions(ATPs)is a contentious *** taking the differential effect hypothesis perspective,our study aims to provide additional evidence about the relation between ATPs and acquisition ***:We examine the interaction of antitakeover provisions(ATPs)with firm characteristics and governance environment in explaining the cross-section of bidder announcement *** a sample of 3,340 completed acquisitions by 1,217 firms during 1996–2006,we test the association between ATPs,firm characteristics,and governance environments with bidder ***:We find that ATPs hurt acquisition performance only when acquirers hold a high level of excess ***,ATPs are associated with lower bidder returns only when industry competition is weak and public pension fund ownership is low as *** contrast,when industry competition is intense and/or public pension fund ownership is high,ATPs do not hurt bidder ***:The complementarity among ATPs,excess cash,industry competition,and public pension fund ownership suggests that ATPs per se do not necessarily result in value-destroying acquisitions for all *** address the endogeneity issue of unknown variables by using a proxy for firm prestige and draw the same conclusions.

BACKGROUND:Patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in whom myocardial infarction has been ruled out are still at risk of having obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD).This rate is higher among patients with intermediate high-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) concentrations (5 ng/L to 99th percentile) than low concentrations (<5 ng/L).Therefore,an intermediate concentration has been suggested as a candidate for downstream investigation with computed tomography coronary angiography(CTCA).We tried to compare the HEART score-guided ***-guided approach for identifying obstructive ***:From a prospective cohort study of patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected ACS,433 patients without elevated hsTnI who also underwent CTCA were selected and *** performances of hsTnI concentration and HEART score were compared using sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value (PPV),and negative predictive value (NPV).RESULTS:Overall,120 (27.7%) patients had obstructive *** with intermediate hsTnI concentrations were more likely to have obstructive CAD than those with low hsTnI concentrations(40.0%vs.18.1%);patients with non-low-risk HEART scores (≥4 points) were also more likely to have obstructive CAD than those with low-risk scores (0 to 3 points)(41.0%vs.7.6%).The HEART score had higher sensitivity and NPV for detecting obstructive CAD in each classification than hsTnI concentration (sensitivity:89.2%vs.63.3%;NPV:92.4%vs.81.9%,respectively).CONCLUSION:After excluding myocardial infarction in patients with suspected ACS,adding the HEART score for selecting candidates for CTCA could improve patient risk stratification more accurately than relying on hsTnI concentration.
