A novel electrospinning method for self-assembled tree-like fibrous scaffolds:Microenvironment-associated regulation of MSC behavior and bone regeneration

Numerous studies highlight advantages of electrospun scaffolds in bone tissue engineering,in which cellular behavior is tightly affected by fiber topographical cues of ***,the classic electrospinning setup limits a desired presentation of biomimetic fibrous microenvironments that sense mechanosignaling and regulate stem cell *** aims of this study were to fabricate advanced asspun scaffolds presenting tree-like microfiber/nanonet networks and to evaluate their regulatory potentials on behavior of human mesenchymal stem cells(h MSCs)and bone *** we developed a novel electrospinning setup that allowed the presentation of patterned Trunk microfibers(TMF)and/or branched nanonet fibers(BNn Fs)in biomimetic fibrous *** the cellular mechanisms,anisotropichierarchical topography of TMF controlled behavior of h MSCs through focal adhesion formation and Yesassociated protein(YAP)induction,whereas BNn F disturbed such mechanosensing responses in the *** fiber microenvironment-related expression and nuclear localization of YAP *** correlated with the potentials of as-spun scaffolds to enhance osteogenic differentiation of the h MSCs and alveolar bone defect healing in an animal ***,this study provides an advanced approach of the modified electrospinning setup for presentation of biomimetic fibrillar microenvironments in as-spun scaffolds along with their application in stem cell behavior regulation and regenerative tissue engineering.

The global incidence rates of in-hospital cardiac arrest(IHCA)range from1.2 to 9.0 per1,000 hospitalized patients,as per the National Cardiac Arrest Database.[1] While IHCAs tend to exhibit superior 30-day survival rates relative to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) due to situational advantages,such as immediate access to medical personnel and treatments.

Long-lasting,reinforced electrical networking in a high-loading Li_(2)S cathode for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Realizing a lithium sulfide(Li_(2)S)cathode with both high energy density and a long lifespan requires an innovative cathode design that maximizes electrochemical performance and resists electrode ***,a high-loading Li_(2)S-based cathode with micrometric Li_(2)S particles composed of two-dimensional graphene(Gr)and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes(CNTs)in a compact geometry is developed,and the role of CNTs in stable cycling of high-capacity Li–S batteries is *** a dimensionally combined carbon matrix,CNTs embedded within the Gr sheets create robust and sustainable electron diffusion pathways while suppressing the passivation of the active carbon *** a unique point,during the first charging process,the proposed cathode is fully activated through the direct conversion of Li_(2)S into S_(8) without inducing lithium polysulfide *** direct conversion of Li_(2)S into S_(8) in the composite cathode is ubiquitously investigated using the combined study of in situ Raman spectroscopy,in situ optical microscopy,and cryogenic transmission electron *** composite cathode demonstrates unprecedented electrochemical properties even with a high Li_(2)S loading of 10 mg cm^(–2);in particular,the practical and safe Li–S full cell coupled with a graphite anode shows ultra-long-term cycling stability over 800 cycles.

AIM： To determine if the fraction of Nardostachysjata- mansi （N J） has the potential to ameliorate the severity of acute pancreatitis （AP）. METhoDS： Mice were administered the biologically active fraction of N J, i.e., the 4th fraction （N J4）, intra- peritoneally, and then injected with the stable chole- cystokinin analogue cerulein hourly for 6 h. Six hours after the last cerulein injection, the pancreas, lung, and blood were harvested for morphological examination,measurement of cytokine expression, and examination of neutrophil infiltration. RESULTS： N J4 administration attenuated the sever- ity of AP and lung injury associated with AP. It also reduced cytokine production and neutrophil infiltration and resulted in the in vivo up-regulation of heine oxy- genase-1 （ho-1）. Furthermore, NJ4 and its biologically active fraction, N J4-2 inhibited the cerulein-induced death of acinar cells by inducing ho-1 in isolated pan- creatic acinar cells. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that N J4 may be a candidate fraction offering protection in AP and N J4 might ameliorate the severity of pancreatitis by induc- ing ho-1 expression.

In the present study,we report a fabrication of dual-mode carbon coated gadolinia C@Gd_(2)O_(3)particles by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method without using any organic *** prepared C@Gd_(2)O_(3)particles have a core-shell structure and a narrow size distribution in the range of 261±27 *** fluorescent properties of the prepared C@Gd_(2)O_(3)particles were accessed by a room-temperature photoluminescence study,while the longitudinal relaxivity(r1)was examined by using a clinical 1.5 T MRI scanner.A murine fibroblast L-929 cell line was used to examine the cytotoxicity and capability of the prepared C@Gd_(2)O_(3)particles for the fluorescent *** obtained results show that the prepared C@Gd_(2)O_(3)particles could be used as a dual-mode contrast agent for magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging.

Estimation of effective plant area index for South Korean forests using LiDAR system

Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR) systems can be used to estimate both vertical and horizontal forest *** components,the leaves of trees and the understory can be described with high precision,using geo-registered *** on this concept,the Effective Plant Area Indices(PAIe) for areas of Korean Pine(Pinus koraiensis),Japanese Larch(Larix leptolepis) and Oak(Quercus spp.) were estimated by calculating the ratio of intercepted and incident LIDAR laser rays for the canopies of the three forest ***,the canopy gap fraction(GLiDAR) was generated by extracting the LiDAR data reflected from the canopy surface,or inner canopy area,using k-means *** LiDAR-derived PAIe was then estimated by using GLIDAR with the Beer-Lambert law.A comparison of the LiDAR-derived and field-derived PAIe revealed the coefficients of determination for Korean Pine,Japanese Larch and Oak to be 0.82,0.64 and 0.59,*** differences between field-based and LIDAR-based PAIe for the different forest types were attributed to the amount of leaves and branches in the forest *** absence of leaves,in the case of both Larch and Oak,meant that the LiDAR pulses were only reflected from *** probability that the LiDAR pulses are reflected from bare branches is low as compared to the reflection from branches with a high leaf *** is because the size of the branch is smaller than the resolution across and along the 1 meter LIDAR laser ***,a better predictive accuracy would be expected for the model if the study would be repeated in late spring when the shoots and leaves of the deciduous trees begin to appear.

AIM： To compare ecabet sodium and cimetidine in relieving symptoms of functional dyspepsia. METhoDS： We performed a multi-center, prospective, randomized, double-blinded controlled trial to compare the clinical efficacy of ecabet sodium and cimetidine in patients with functional dyspepsia. Two-hundred and seventy-two patients with dyspeptic symptoms fulfilling the Rome-II criteria were enrolled from 7 centers. In the study group （115 patients）, 1.5 g ecabet sodium was given twice a day. In the control group （121 patients）, 400 mg cimetidine was given twice a day. Symptoms and parameters of quality of life were analyzed at baseline, 3, 14, and 28 d after initiating the treatment. RESULTS： Two-hundred and thirty-six patients completed the clinical trial. After 4 wk of treatment, the rates of improvement in patients with dyspeptic symptoms were not different between two groups （77.4% in the ecabet group and 79.3% in the cimetidine group, respectively, P 〉 0.05）. Likewise, the rates of symptomatic improvement were not different at 3 d and 14 d. The parameters of quality of life did not change significantly during the study period in both groups. There was no clinically significant adverse event in both groups.

Discrepancies between primary physician practice and treatment guidelines for Helicobacterpylori infection in Korea

AIM： To evaluate the attitude of primary care physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori （fl pylori） infection. METhoDS： Primary care physicians in the Seoul metropolitan area answered self-administered questionnaire from January to March 2003. RESULTS： One hundred and eight doctors responded to the questionnaire. The most frequent reasons for testing H pylori infection were gastric and duodenal ulcers （93.5% and 88.9%, respectively）. For patients with Hplori positive dyspepsia, 28.7% of doctors always tried to eradicate the worm and 34.4% treated selectively. A large proportion （28.7%） of primary care physicians treated H pylori on a patient＇s request basis. Only 9.3% of primary care physicians always conducted follow-up testing after treating H pylori infection. When H pylori was not cleared by the first treatment, 40.7% of doctors reused the same regimen, 16.7% changed to another triple regimen and 25% to a quadruple regimen. CONCLUSION： It has been well documented that the issuance of guidelines alone has little impact on practice. Communication between primary care physicians and gastroenterologists in the form of continuous medical education is required.

Gastric choriocarcinoma admixed with an α-fetoprotein-producing adenocarcinoma and separated adenocarcinoma

We report a case of gastric choriocarcinoma admixed with an α-fetoprotein (AFP)-producing adeno-carcinoma. A 70-year-old man was hospitalized for gastric cancer that was detected during screening by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Initial laboratory data showed the increased serum level of AFP and EGD revealed a 5-cm ulcerofungating mass in the greater curvature of the gastric antrum. The patient underwent radical subtotal gastrectomywith D2 lymph node dissection and Billroth gastrojejunostomy. Histopathological evaluation confirmed double primary gastric cancer: gastric choriocarcinoma admixed with an AFP-producing adenocarcinoma and separated adenocarcinoma. At 2 wk postoperatively, his human chorionic gonadotropin and AFP levels had reduced and six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy were initiated. No recurrence or distant metastasis was observed at 4 years postoperatively.
