High efficiency and stable solid-state fiber dye-sensitized solar cells obtained using TiO_(2) photoanodes enhanced with metal organic frameworks

Solid-state fiber dye-sensitized solar cells(SS-FDSSCs) have been the subject of intensive attention and development in recent years. Although this field is only in its infancy, metal–organic frameworks(MOFs) are one such material that has been utilized to further improve the power conversion efficiency of solar cells. In this study, MOF-integrated DSSCs were shown to have potential in the development of solar cell devices with efficiency comparable to or better than that of conventional solar cells. The power conversion efficiency(PCE) of SS-FDSSCs was improved by embedding MOF-801 into a mesoporous-TiO_(2)(mp-TiO_(2)) layer, which was used as a photoanode in SS-FDSSCs, which are inherently flexible. The PCE of the MOF-integrated SS-FDSSCs was 6.50%, which is comparable to that of the reference devices(4.19%).The MOF-801 enhanced SS-FDSSCs decreased the series resistance(R_(s)) value, resulting in effective electron extraction with improved short-circuit current density(J_(SC)), while also increasing the shunt resistance(R_(sh)) value to prevent the recombination of photo-induced electrons. The result is an improved fill factor and, consequently, a higher value for the PCE.

Background Genome editing has been considered as powerful tool in agricultural fields.However,genome editing progress in cattle has not been fast as in other mammal species,for some disadvantages including long gestational periods,single pregnancy,and high raising cost.Furthermore,technically demanding methods such as microinjection and somatic cell nuclear transfer(SCNT)are needed for gene editing in cattle.In this point of view,electroporation in embryos has been risen as an alternative.Results First,editing efficiency of our electroporation methods were tested for embryos.Presence of mutation on embryo was confirmed by T7E1 assay.With first combination,mutation rates for MSTN and PRNP were 57.6%±13.7%and 54.6%±13.5%,respectively.In case of MSTN/BLG,mutation rates were 83.9%±23.6%for MSTN,84.5%±18.0%for BLG.Afterwards,the double-KO embryos were transferred to surrogates and mutation rate was identified in resultant calves by targeted deep sequencing.Thirteen recipients were transferred for MSTN/PRNP,4 calves were delivered,and one calf underwent an induction for double KO.Ten surrogates were given double-KO embryos for MSTN/BLG,and four of the six calves that were born had mutations in both genes.Conclusions These data demonstrated that production of genome edited cattle via electroporation of RNP could be effectively applied.Finally,MSTN and PRNP from beef cattle and MSTN and BLG from dairy cattle have been born and they will be valuable resources for future precision breeding.

Materials and devices for flexible and stretchable photodetectors and light-emitting diodes

Recently,significant efforts have been directed at overcoming the limitations of conventional rigid optoelectronic devices,particularly their poor mechanical stability under bending,folding,and stretching deformations.One of major approaches for rendering optoelectronic devices mechanically deformable is to replace the conventional electronic/optoelectronic materials with functional nanomaterials or organic materials that are intrinsically flexible/stretchable.Further,advanced device designs and unconventional fabrication methods have also contributed to the development of soft optoelectronic devices.Accordingly,new devices such as bio-inspired curved image sensors,wearable light emitting devices,and deformable bio-integrated optoelectronic devices have been developed.In this review,recent progress in the development of soft optoelectronic materials and devices is outlined.First,various materials such as nanomaterials,organic materials,and their hybrids that are suitable for developing deformable photodetectors,are presented.Then,the nanomaterials and organic/polymeric materials that are applicable in deformable light-emitting diodes are described.Finally,representative system-level applications of flexible and stretchable photodetectors and light-emitting diodes are reviewed,and future prospects are discussed.

BACKGROUND Renal cell carcinoma(RCC)is the third most common malignancy in the genitourinary tract.The lungs,bone,lymph nodes,liver,and brain are common metastatic sites of RCC.However,there is limited literature on single omental metastasis of RCC.CASE SUMMARY We present the case of a 44-year-old man with single omental metastasis of RCC after laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.Pathological diagnosis of the resected left kidney revealed pT3a clear cell RCC(Fuhrman grade III).At 6 mo postoperatively,abdominal computed tomography revealed a 12-mm enhancing nodule in the left lower peritoneum.At 7 mo after initial operation,laparoscopic removal of the left omental nodule was performed.The pathological results indicated metastatic clear cell RCC.Currently,the patient is being treated with adjuvant pembrolizumab.CONCLUSION Omental metastasis of RCC owing to laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is rare.Urologists should be aware of the diverse nature of RCC.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomies with fully covered self-expandable metallic stents

AIM:To investigate the long-term outcomes of endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy(EUS-CDS) with a fully covered self-expandable metallic stent(FCSEMS).METHODS:From April 2009 to August 2010,15 patients with distal malignant biliary obstructions who were candidates for alternative techniques for biliary decompression due to a failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) were included.These 15 patients consisted of 8 men and 7 women and had a median age of 61 years(range:30-91 years).The underlying causes of the distal malignant biliary obstruction were pancreatic cancer(n = 9),ampulla of Vater cancer(n = 2),renal cell carcinoma(n = 1),advanced gastric cancer(n = 1),lymphoma(n = 1),and duodenal cancer(n = 1).RESULTS:The technical success rate of EUS-CDS with an FCSEMS was 86.7%(13/15),and functional success was achieved in 100%(13/13) of those cases.In two patients,the EUS-CDS failed because an FCSEMS with a delivery device could not be passed into the common bile duct.The mean duration of stent patency was 264 d.Early adverse events developed in three patients(3/13,23.1%),including self-limited pneumoperitoneum in two patients and cholangitis requiring stent reposition in one patient.During the follow-up period(median:186 d,range:52-388 d),distal stent migration occurred in four patients(4/13,30.8%).In 3 patients,the FCSEMS could be reinserted through the existing choledochoduodenal fistula tract.CONCLUSION:EUS-CDS with an FCSEMS is technically feasible and can lead to effective palliation of distal malignant biliary obstructions after failed ERCP.

Prognostic significance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in patients with stage Ⅲ and Ⅳcolorectal cancer

AIM To evaluate the prognostic value of the neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio(NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio(PLR) in patients with colorectal cancer(CRC).METHODS Between April 1996 and December 2010, medical records from a total of 1868 patients with CRC were retrospectively reviewed. The values of simple inflammatory markers including NLR and PLR in predicting the long-term outcomes of these patients were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models.RESULTS The median follow-up duration was 46 mo(interquartile range, 22-73). The estimation of NLR and PLR was based on the time of diagnosis. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, high NLR (≥ 3.0) and high PLR(≥ 160) were independent risk factors predicting poor long-term outcomes in patients with stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ CRC. However, high NLR and high PLR were not prognostic factors in patients with stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ CRC.CONCLUSION In this study, we identified that high NLR (≥ 3.0) and high PLR (≥ 160) are useful prognostic factors to predict long-term outcomes in patients with stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ CRC.

Diagnostic performance of the current risk-stratified approach with computed tomography for suspected choledocholithiasis and its options when negative finding

Background:Several studies evaluated the current guideline of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy(ASGE)and reported only suboptimal accuracy.This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the ASGE guideline based on computed tomography(CT)and role of endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP)in patients with suspected choledocholithiasis but negative CT finding.Methods:Patients with suspected choledocholithiasis undergoing ERCP between January 2016 and January 2017 were retrospectively analyzed.All patients underwent CT to detect choledocholithiasis.EUS or MRCP was performed when the CT scan showed negative findings.Patients were classified into the high and intermediate-risk groups,based on predictors from the ASGE criteria.Results:Of 583 patients with suspected choledocholithiasis,340(58.3%)had stones on ERCP(65.9%in the high-risk group and 40.6%in the intermediate-risk group).The accuracy of ASGE guideline for CT was 63.98%(79.12%sensitivity,42.80%specificity)and 36.02%(20.88%sensitivity,57.20%specificity)in the high-risk and intermediate-risk groups,respectively.In 103 patients in the high-risk group underwent both CT and US,the accuracy of CT was higher than that of US for detecting choledocholithiasis(78.64%vs.53.40%),with a significant difference in area under the curve(AUC)(0.78 vs.0.59,P<0.001).Of 339 with negative CT finding,the accuracy of EUS was higher than that of MRCP(90.91%vs.82.76%),but with no significant difference in AUC(0.91 vs.0.83,P=0.347).Conclusions:CT-based ASGE guideline showed superior diagnostic performance than US for predicting choledocholithiasis.The diagnostic options,EUS or MRCP,with negative CT finding showed comparable performance.Therefore,the diagnostic modality should be selected based on availability,experience,cost,and contraindications.

Acupuncture Alters Pro-inflammatory Cytokines in the Plasma of Maternally Separated Rat Pups

Objective: To investigate the potential alleviating effects of acupuncture on maternal separation(MS)-induced changes in plasma pro-inflammatory cytokine levels of rat pups. Methods: On postnatal day 15, rat pups were randomly assigned to 4 groups(n=6 per group) using a random number table: normal, MS, MS with acupuncture stimulation at Shenmen(HT 7) acupoint(MS+HT 7), and MS with acupuncture stimulation at Chengshan(BL 57) acupoint(MS+BL 57) groups. Rat pups in the normal group were housed with their mothers under standard conditions; those in the MS, MS+HT 7 and MS+BL 57 groups were maternally separated and individually maintained. Acupuncture stimulation was performed at HT 7 or BL 57 acupoints once a day for 7 consecutive days. A tail suspension test was performed to measure immobility time of rats and the plasma was collected on postnatal day 21, then levels of corticosterone(CORT), interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6 and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) in plasma were measured. Results: Compared with the normal group, the immobility time and the plasma levels of CORT, IL-1β, IL-6 and GDNF in the MS group were significantly increased(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the MS group, the immobility time and the plasma levels of CORT, IL-1β, IL-6 and GDNF were significantly reduced in the MS+HT 7 group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Moreover, the immobility time and plasma levels of IL-1β and IL-6 in the MS+HT 7 group were significantly lower than those in the MS+BL 57 group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture stimulation at HT 7 can alleviate the behavioral impairment and changes of the cytokines by MS, indicating that acupuncture can help to relieve MS-induced depression.

Diagnostic delay in inflammatory bowel disease increases the risk of intestinal surgery

AIM To investigate the factors affecting diagnostic delay and outcomes of diagnostic delay in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) METHODS We retrospectively studied 165 patients with Crohn's disease(CD) and 130 patients with ulcerative colitis(UC) who were diagnosed and had follow up durations > 6 mo at Korea University Ansan Hospital from January 2000 to December 2015. A diagnostic delay was defined as the time interval between the first symptom onset and IBD diagnosis in which the 76^(th) to 100^(th) percentiles of patients were diagnosed.RESULTS The median diagnostic time interval was 6.2 and 2.4 mo in the patients with CD and UC, respectively. Among the initial symptoms, perianal discomfort before diagnosis(OR = 10.2, 95%CI: 1.93-54.3, P = 0.006) was associated with diagnostic delays in patients with CD; however, no clinical factor was associated with diagnostic delays in patients with UC. Diagnostic delays, stricturing type, and penetrating type were associated with increased intestinal surgery risks in CD(OR = 2.54, 95%CI: 1.06-6.09; OR = 4.44, 95%CI: 1.67-11.8; OR = 3.79, 95%CI: 1.14-12.6, respectively). In UC, a diagnostic delay was the only factor associated increased intestinal surgery risks(OR = 6.81, 95%CI: 1.12-41.4).CONCLUSION A diagnostic delay was associated with poor outcomes, such as increased intestinal surgery risks in patients with CD and UC.

AKT regulates IL-1β-induced proliferation and activation of hepatic stellate cells

Background:Activated hepatic stellate cells(HSCs)are closely involved in the initiation,perpetuation,and resolution of liver fibrosis.Pro-inflammatory cytokine levels are positively correlated with the transition from liver injury to fibrogenesis and contribute to HSC pathophysiology in liver fibrosis.Methods:In this study,we investigated the effect of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin(IL)-1βon the proliferation and signaling pathways involved in fibrogenesis in LX-2 cells,an HSC cell line,using western blotting and cell proliferation assays.Results:IL-1βincreased the proliferation rate andα-smooth muscle actin(SMA)expression of LX-2 cells in a dose-dependent manner.Within 1 h after IL-1βtreatment,c-jun N-terminal kinase(JNK),p38,and nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)signaling was activated in LX-2 cells.Subsequently,protein kinase B(AKT)phosphorylation and an increase inα-SMA expression were observed in LX-2 cells.Each inhibitor of JNK,p38,or NF-κB decreased cell proliferation,AKT phosphorylation,andα-SMA expression in IL-1β-treated LX-2 cells.Conclusion:These results indicate that JNK,p38,and NF-κB signals converge at AKT phosphorylation,leading to LX-2 activation by IL-1β.Therefore,the AKT signaling pathway can be used as a target for alleviating liver fibrosis by the inflammatory cytokine IL-1β.
