Classification of Precipitation Types Using Fall Velocity–Diameter Relationships from 2D-Video Distrometer Measurements

Fall velocity–diameter relationships for four different snowflake types（dendrite,plate,needle,and graupel） were investigated in northeastern South Korea,and a new algorithm for classifying hydrometeors is proposed for distrometric measurements based on the new *** ice crystals（approximately 40 000 particles） were measured with a two-dimensional video disdrometer（2DVD） during a winter experiment from 15 January to 9 April *** fall velocity–diameter relationships were derived for the four types of snowflakes based on manual classification by experts using snow photos and 2DVD measurements：the coefficients（exponents） for different snowflake types were 0.82（0.24） for dendrite,0.74（0.35） for plate,1.03（0.71） for needle,and 1.30（0.94） for graupel,*** new relationships established in the present study（PS） were compared with those from two previous *** types were classified with the derived fall velocity–diameter relationships,and the classification algorithm was evaluated using 3 × 3 contingency tables for one rain–snow transition event and three snowfall *** algorithm showed good performance for the transition event：the critical success indices（CSIs） were 0.89,0.61 and 0.71 for snow,wet-snow and rain,*** snow events,the algorithm performance for dendrite and plate（CSIs = 1.0 and 1.0,respectively） was better than for needle and graupel（CSIs = 0.67 and 0.50,respectively）.

Mitochondria-targeting self-assembled nanoparticles derived from triphenylphosphonium-conjugated cyanostilbene enable site-specific imaging and anticancer drug delivery

Subcellular organelle-specific nanoparticles for simultaneous tumor targeting, imaging, and drug delivery are of enormous interest in cancer therapy. Herein, we report a selective mitochondria-targeting probe 1, which was synthesized by incorporating a triphenyl phosphine with a cyanostilbene and a long alkyl chain moiety. Probe 1 was found to display fluorescence via aggregation-induced emission （AIE）. The low molecular-weight cyanostilbene-based probe 1, with and without an anticancer drug, formed a narrow homogeneous nanorod with ca. 110 nm of length or nanopartides with ca. 20 nm diameter in aqueous media. The self-assembled cyanostilbene nanoparticles （N1） selectively accumulated in the mitochondria of cancer cells and emitted fluorescence. N1 was also able to deliver an anticancer drug, doxorubicin （DOX）, to the mitochondria with high efficiency. More importantl~ N1 exhibited highly selective cytotoxicity for cancer cells over normal cells. The great potential applications of this self-assembled nanoparticle to biological systems result from its ability to aggregate in the mitochondria. This aggregation led to a significant increase in the generation of intraceUular reactive oxygen species and to a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential in cancer cells. Furthermore, tumor tissue uptake experiments in mice proposed that the self-assembled N1 had the ability to internalize and deliver the anticancer drug into tumor tissues effectively. Moreover, both N1 and Nl-encapsulated doxorubicin （N1-DOX） effectively suppressed tumor growth in a xenograft model in vivo. Taken together, our findings indicate that applications of N1 as a mitochondrial targeting probe, drug delivery platform, and chemotherapeutic agent provide a unique strategy for potential image-guided therapy as well as a site-specific delivery system to cancer cells.

Circulating miRNAs in Ageing and Ageing-Related Diseases

MicroRNAs （miRNAs） are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. They are involved in important biological processes including development, homeostasis, and ageing. Recently, extracellular miRNAs have been discovered in the bloodstream and bodily fluids. These miRNAs are shown to be secreted and circulating in microvesicles （MVs）, or in complex with other factors such as RNA-binding proteins and high-density lipoprotein （HDL） particles. These cell-free, circulating miRNAs can be taken into and function as negative regulators of target genes in recipient cells. Here we review the biogenesis and uptake of circulating miRNAs as well as their profiles in ageing and ageing-related diseases. We discuss the emerging role of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Time-dependent effect of combination therapy with erythropoietin and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in a mouse model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury

Erythropoietin （EPO） and granulocyte colony- stimulating factor （G-CSF） are likely to play broad roles in the brain. We investigated the effects of combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in hypoxic- ischemic brain injury during the acute, subacute, and chronic phases. A total of 79 C57BL/6 mice with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury were randomly assigned acute （days 1-5）, subacute （days 11-15）and chronic （days 28-32） groups. All of them were treated with G-CSF （250 μg/kg） and EPO （5 000 U/kg） or saline daily for 5 consecutive days. Behavioral assessments and immunohistochemistry for angiogenesis, neuro- genesis, and astrogliosis were performed with an 8-week follow-up. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 （HIF-1） was also measured by Western blot analysis. The results showed that the combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in the acute phase significantly improved rotarod performance and forelimb-use symmetry compared to the other groups, while subacute EPO and G-CSF therapy exhibited a modest improvement compared with the chronic saline controls. The acute treatment significantly increased the density of CD31^＋（PECAM-1） and a-smooth muscle actin^＋ vessels in the frontal cortex and striatum, increased BrdU^＋/PSA- NCAM^＋ neurogenesis in the subventricular zone, and decreased astroglial density in the striatum. Furthermore, acute treatment significantly increased the HIF-1 expression in the cytosol and nucleus, whereas chronic treatment did not change the HIF-1 expression, consistent with the behavioral outcomes. These results indicate that the induction of HIF-1 expression by combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF synergistically enhances not only behavioral function but also neurogenesis and angiogenesis while decreasing the astroglial response in a time- dependent manner.

Clinical significance of hepatitis B e antigen level measurement during long-term lamivudine therapy in chronic hepatitis B patients with e antigen positive

AIM： To determine the changes of quantitative hepatitis B e antigen （HBeAg） that predicts early detection of non-response or breakthrough to long-term lamivudine （LAM） therapy. METHODS： Among HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B patients who failed to achieve HBeAg seroconversion within 12 too, we retrospectively analyzed 220 patients who had received LAM more than 24 too. RESULTS： The mean duration of LAM therapy was 36 （range, 24-72） mo. HBeAg seroconversion after the first 12 mo of LAM therapy was achieved in 53 （24.1%） patients. Viral breakthrough was observed in 105 （47.7%） patients. To find out whether the changing patterns of HBeAg levels can predict the outcome of LAM therapy, we analyzed the reduction rates of HBeAg levels during LAM therapy. Using the decrease more than 90% of pretreatment HBeAg levels, the sensitivity and specificity of response were 96.2% and 70.1%, respectively. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the reduction patterns of the decrease of quantitative HBeAg： decrescendo, decrescendo-crescendo, no change or fluctuating groups. The optimal time to predict non-response or breakthrough was the first 9 mo of therapy. At 9 mo of therapy, 49 （92.5%） of 53 patients who had achieved HBeAg seroconversion were included in the decrescendo group. On the contrary, in the no change or fluctuating group, only four （7.5%） had achieved HBeAg seroconversion. Among patients who did not show the continuous decrease of HBeAg levels at 9 too, 95.2% （negative predictive value） failed to achieve HBeAg seroconversion. CONCLUSION： Almost all patients who failed to show a continuous decrease of HBeAg levels at 9 mo of LAM therapy were non-response or breakthrough. Therefore, monitoring changes of HBeAg levels during LAM therapy in HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B may be valuable for identifying patients who are at high risk of non-response or breakthrough.

Dynamic Changes in Left and Right Cerebral Oxygen Saturation during Selective Cerebral Perfusion in Young Infants

Objectives:We investigated whether the selective cerebral perfusion(SCP)technique causes differences in changes in cerebral perfusion between both hemispheres in young infants,using cerebral oxygen saturation(ScO2)as an ***,we determined the association between the discrepancy in ScO2 and cerebral perfu-sion pressure during ***:The difference in ScO2 between the left and right cerebral hemispheres(ΔScO2 Rt-Lt)was calculated during clamping of the innominate artery(IA)and during ***:In 25 infants(aged 2 to 78 days),the left and right ScO2 were well maintained(median 63.2%and 60.9%during IA clamping,respectively;64.0%and 65.6%during SCP,respectively).During IA clamping,right and left ScO2 decreased(med-ian-1.4%and-1.0%,respectively).During SCP,rightΔScO2 was higher compared to leftΔScO2(median 1.5%vs.0.6%;p<0.001).Eight patients had a higher rightΔScO2 than leftΔScO2 throughout *** had lowerΔScO2 Rt-Lt during IA clamping(median-3.2%vs.0.0%;p<0.001)and higherΔScO2 Rt-Lt during SCP than others(median 5.0%vs.-0.8%;p<0.001).During and after SCP,the correlation coefﬁcient between rightΔScO2 and change in the mean arterial pressure was higher in patients with a discrepancy than in others(r=0.731 vs.r=0.519;p<0.001).Conclusions:This study suggests that SCP permits adequate bilateral cerebral ***,the unilateral cerebral perfusion technique may cause a difference in cerebral perfusion between both hemispheres in young infants;this may depend on the perfusion pressure.

Patterns and determinants of plant richness by elevation in a mountain ecosystem in South Korea: area, mid-domain effect,climate and productivity

We examined patterns of plant species richness on an elevation gradient and evaluated the effects of cli- matic variables including mean annual temperature and precipitation, area, the mid-domain effect and productivity on species richness along two transects on Mt. Seorak, South Korea. A total of 235 plant species of 72 families and 161 genera were recorded from 130 plots along the two transects. Two different patterns, monotonic decline and a unimodal shape, were observed for woody plants with the change in elevation along the two transects, whereas multimodal patterns were observed for all plant species considered together and for herbaceous plants. Area and productivity showed significant relationships with total plant richness. Climatic variables were better predictors than other variables for variation by elevation in woody plant richness, whereas productivity was a more important variable for herbaceous plant richness. Although area was an important variable for predicting species richness pat- terns, the effects differed by transect and plant group. No empirical evidence was linked to the mid-domain *** elevational patterns may characterize different groups in the same taxon and there might be fundamental differences in the mechanisms underlying these richness patterns.

Multi-View Multi-Modal Head-Gaze Estimation for Advanced Indoor User Interaction

Gaze estimation is one of the most promising technologies for supporting indoor monitoring and interaction ***,previous gaze estimation techniques generally work only in a controlled laboratory environment because they require a number of high-resolution eye *** makes them unsuitable for welfare and healthcare facilities with the following challenging characteristics:1)users’continuous movements,2)various lighting conditions,and 3)a limited amount of available *** address these issues,we introduce a multi-view multi-modal head-gaze estimation system that translates the user’s head orientation into the gaze *** proposed system captures the user using multiple cameras with depth and infrared modalities to train more robust gaze estimators under the aforementioned *** this end,we implemented a deep learning pipeline that can handle different types and combinations of *** proposed system was evaluated using the data collected from 10 volunteer participants to analyze how the use of single/multiple cameras and modalities affect the performance of head-gaze *** various experiments,we found that 1)an infrared-modality provides more useful features than a depth-modality,2)multi-view multi-modal approaches provide better accuracy than singleview single-modal approaches,and 3)the proposed estimators achieve a high inference efficiency that can be used in real-time applications.

Diversity patterns and phylogenetic structure of vascular plants along elevational gradients in a mountain ecosystem, South Korea

Recently, a phylogenetic diversity and community structure analysis as complementary to species-centric approaches in biodiversity studies provides new insights into the processes of community assembly. In this study, we analyzed species and phylogenetic diversity and community structures for woody and herbaceous plants along two elevational transects on Mt. Baekhwa, South Korea. The species richness and phylogenetic diversity of woody plants showed monotonic declining patterns with increasing elevation along all transects, whereas herbaceous plants showed different patterns, such as no relationship and a reversed unimodal pattern, between the study transects. The main drivers of these patterns were climate and habitat variables for woody and herbaceous plants, respectively. In addition, the phylogenetic community structure primarily showed phylogenetic clustering regulated by deterministic processes, especially environmental filtering, such as climate or habitat factors, along the two transects, although herbaceous plants along a transect depicted phylogenetic randomness as a result of a neutral process. Our findings suggest that deterministic and neutral processes may simultaneously control the community structures along small-scale elevational gradients such as local transects, although the deterministic process may be the predominant type.

This paper proposes a method for improving the data security of wireless sensor networks based on blockchain *** technology is applied to data transfer to build a highly secure wireless sensor *** this network,the relay stations use microcontrollers and embedded devices,and the microcontrollers,such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino Yun,represents mobile *** proposed system uses microcontrollers to facilitate the connection of various sensor *** adopting blockchain encryption,the security of sensing data can be effectively improved.A blockchain is a concatenated transaction record that is protected by *** section contains the encrypted hash of the previous section,the corresponding timestamp,and transaction *** transaction data denote the sensing data of the wireless sensing *** proposed system uses a hash value representation calculated by the Merkel-tree algorithm,which makes the transfer data of the system difficult to be tamped ***,the proposed system can serve as a private cloud data *** this study,the system visualizes the data uploaded by sensors and create relevant charts based on big data *** the webpage server of the proposed system is built on an embedded operating system,it is easy to model and visualize the corresponding graphics using Python or JavaScript programming ***,this study creates an embedded system mobile database and web server,which can utilize JavaScript program language and *** runtime environment to apply blockchain technology to mobile *** proposed method is verified by the experiment using about 1600 data *** results show that the possibility of data being changed is very small,and the probability of data being changed is almost zero.
