Analysis of prognostic factors and outcomes of gastric cancer in younger patients:A case control study using propensity score methods

AIM:To understand the clinicopathological and prognostic features of gastric cancer in younger and older ***:Between January 2002 and December2008,1667 patients underwent curative gastric *** comparative purposes,the patients were divided into two groups:younger patients who were less than 40 years old(112 patients),and older patients who were 40 years old and older(1555 patients).In both groups,propensity scoring methods were used to select patients with similar disease statuses.A total of224 matched cases,with 112 patients in each group,were included in the final ***:Compared to the older group,the younger group with gastric cancer had a significantly higher percentage of females(P=0.007),poorly differentiated or signet ring cell carcinoma(P<0.001),advanced T stage gastric cancer(P=0.045),and advanced tumornode-metastasis stage cancer(P=0.036).The older group with gastric cancer had more comorbidities(P<0.001).With the exception of the number of lymph node dissection(P<0.001)and retrieved lymph node(P=0.010),there were no statistically significant differences between the postoperative outcomes of the two *** the follow-up period,there were19 recurrences in the younger group and 11 recurrences in the older *** overall five-year survival rates in the younger and older groups were 84.3%and89.6%,respectively(P=0.172).There were no significant differences(P=0.238)in the overall survival of patients with advanced T stage gastric cancer in the two groups,with five-year survival rates of 70.8%in the younger group and 79.5%in the older *** regard to the age-adjusted survival rate,there was significant difference between the two groups(P=0.225).CONCLUSION:In spite of aggressive cancer patterns in the younger group with gastric cancer,the younger group did not have a worse prognosis than the older group in our study.

AIM： To introduce and evaluate the efficacy and technical aspects of endoscopic submucosal dissection （ESD） using a novel device, the Fork knife. METHODS： From March 2004 to April 2008, ESD was performed on 265 gastric lesions using a Fork knife （Endo FS）（group A） and on 72 gastric lesions using a Flexknife （group B） at a single tertiary referral center. We retrospectively compared the endoscopic characteristics of the tumors, pathological findings, and sizes of the resected specimens. We also compared the en b/oc resection rate, complete resection rate, complications, and procedure time between the two groups. RESULTS： The mean size of the resected specimens was 4.27 ± 1.26 cm in group A and 4.29 ± 1.48 cm in group B. The en b/oc resection rate was 95.8% （254/265 lesions） in group A and 93.1% （67/72） in group B. Complete ESD without tumor cell invasion of the resected margin was obtained in 81.1% （215/265） of group A and in 73.6% （53/72） of group B. The perforation rate was 0.8% （2/265） in group A and 1.4% （1/72） in group B. The mean procedure time was 59.63 ± 56.12 min in group A and 76.65 ± 70.75 min in group B （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： The Fork knife （Endo FS） is useful for clinical practice and has the advantage of reducing the procedure time.

The variation of the three-dimensional(3D)structure of the membrane electrode of a fuel cell during proton exchange cycling involves the corrosion/compaction of the carbon *** increasing degradation of the carbon structure continuously reduces the electrocatalytic performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEM-FCs).This phenomenon can be explained by performing 3D tomographic analysis at the ***,conventional tomographic approaches which present limited experimental feasibility,cannot perform such evaluation and have not provided sufficient structural information with statistical significance thus ***,a reliable methodology is required for the 3D geometrical evaluation of the carbon ***,we propose a segmented tomographic approach which employs pore network analysis that enables the visualization of the geometrical parameters corresponding to the porous carbon structure at a high *** approach can be utilized to evaluate the 3D structural degradation of the porous carbon structure after cycling in terms of local surface area,pore size distribution,and their 3D *** geometrical parameters of the carbon body were demonstrated to be substantially reduced owing to the cycling-induced *** information enables a deeper understanding of the degradation phenomenon of carbon supports and can contribute to the development of stable PEM-FC electrodes.

Cyberattacks on the Industrial Control System(ICS)have recently been increasing,made more intelligent by advancing *** such,cybersecurity for such systems is attracting *** a core element of control devices,the Programmable Logic Controller(PLC)in an ICS carries out on-site control over the ICS.A cyberattack on the PLC will cause damages on the overall ICS,with Stuxnet and Duqu as the most representative ***,cybersecurity for PLCs is considered essential,and many researchers carry out a variety of analyses on the vulnerabilities of PLCs as part of preemptive efforts against *** this study,a vulnerability analysis was conducted on the XGB *** vulnerabilities were identified by analyzing the network protocols and memory structure of PLCs and were utilized to launch replay attack,memory modulation attack,and FTP/Web service account theft for the verification of the *** on the results,the attacks were proven to be able to cause the PLC to malfunction and disable it,and the identified vulnerabilities were defined.

The Shihmen reservoir is an important water source for about 3.4 million people in northern Taiwan. To protect reservoir water quality,it is necessary to conserve and manage the associated watersheds. Riparian buffer strips can trap pollutants emitted near a *** location and design of a buffer strip can influence its pollutant-trapping *** commitment of land for use as a riparian buffer strip must consider the project’s economic *** present research is a cost-benefit analysis of various possible land developments in the Shihmen reservoir *** study has applied a regression equation to evaluate pollutant-trapping efficiency levels of riparian buffer strips of various *** buffer strips have been evaluated in terms of net economic effectiveness and benefit-cost *** indicate that the optimal buffer strip width is 30 m for the Shihmen reservoir watershed.

The fabrication of an internal diffraction grating with photoinduced refractive index modification in planar hybrid germanium-silica plates was demonstrated using low-density plasma formation excited by a high-intensity femtosecond (150 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm).The refractive index modifications with diameters ranging from 400 nm to 3 μm were photoinduced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than 2×1013 W/*** graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred.

Co@C core–shell nanospheres highly dispersed on carbon supports were rationally designed to improve the microwave absorbing property of the composite material, and fabricated by one pot thermal decomposition and simple annealing process. The Co nanospheres were completely encapsulated with thin carbon shells, which can effectively prevent the oxidation of the Co surface. Additionally, the particle size of Co nanospheres were properly controlled to optimize the electromagnetic property of the composite material. As a result, the lightweight Co@C/C composites with the particle size of 20 nm exhibited much enhanced microwave absorption properties. The improved microwave absorption performance is attributed mainly to the enhanced isotropic ratio and impedance matching of magnetic composites via tuning the Co particle size. Therefore, the welldesigned core-shell Co@C composite structure will provide a new insight for the development of high performance microwave absorbers.

This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the four stem taper models on Camellia japonica in Jeju Island, Korea using fit statistics and lack-of-fit statistics. The five statistical criteria that were used in this study were standard error of estimate(SEE), mean bias( E), absolute mean difference(AMD), coefficient of determination(R2), and root mean square error(RMSE). Results showed that the Kozak model 02 stem taper had the best performance in all fit statistics(SEE: 3.4708, E : 0.0040 cm, AMD : 0.9060 cm, R2 : 0.9870, and RMSE : 1.2545). On the other hand, Max and Burkhart stem taper model had the poorest performance in each statistical criterion(SEE: 4.2121, E : 0.2520 cm, AMD : 1.1300 cm, R2 : 0.9805, and RMSE: 1.5317). For the lack-of-fit statistics, the Kozak model 02 also provided the best performance having the best AMD in most of the relative height classes for diameter outside bark prediction and in most of the DBH classes for total volume prediction while Max and Burkhart had the poorest performance. These stem taper equations could help forest managers to better estimate the diameter outside bark at any given height, merchantable stem volumes and total stem volumes of the standing trees of Camellia japonica in the forests of Jeju Island, Korea.

Massive multiple input multiple output(MIMO)has become essential for the increase of capacity as the millimeter-wave(mmWave)communication is ***,hybrid beamforming systems have been studied since full-digital beamforming is impractical due to high cost and power consumption of the radio frequency(RF)*** paper proposes a hybrid beamforming scheme to improve the spectral efciency for multi-user MIMO(MU-MIMO)*** a frequency selective fading environment,hybrid beamforming schemes suffer from performance degradation since the analog precoder performs the same precoding for all *** mitigate performance degradation,this paper uses the average channel covariance matrix for all subcarriers and considers an iterative algorithm to design analog precoder using approximation *** analog precoder is iteratively updated for each column until it *** proposed scheme can reduce errors in the approximating process of the overall spectral *** scheme can be applied to fully-connected and partially-connected *** simulation results show that spectral efciency performance for the proposed scheme is better than the conventional *** proposed scheme can achieve similar performance with full-digital beamforming by using a sufciently large number of RF ***,this paper shows that the proposed scheme outperforms other schemes in the frequency selective fading *** performance improvement can be achieved in both structures.
