The cingulum, a long neural tract extending from the orbitof- rontal cortex to the medial temporal lobe, obtains cholinergic innervation from three cholinergic nuclei in the basal fore- brain （the nucleus basalis of Meynert [Ch 4], the medial septal nucleus [Ch 1 ], and the vertical nucleus of the diagonal band [Ch 2]）, and is the passage of the medial cholinergic pathway which supplies cholinergic innervation from the basal forebrain to the cerebral cortex （Folstein et al., 1975; Selden et al., 1998; Lucas-Meunier et al., 2003）. Therefore, it is important for cog- nition, especially memory function （Selden et al., 1998）.

The present study reported a 42-year-old male patient who underwent conservative management for a spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in the left corona radiata and the basal ganglia. The patient presented with complete weakness of the right upper and lower extremities at the onset of intracerebral hemorrhage; however, he showed progressive motor recovery to the level that he was able to extent the affected extremities against some resistance at 5 weeks after onset. The corticospinal tract of the affected （left） hemisphere connected to the left Broca＇s area at 3 weeks after onset as shown by diffusion tensor tractography. By contrast, this connection had disappeared at 5 weeks after onset as shown by diffusion tensor tractogaphy. Transcranial magnetic stimulation study showed that no motor evoked potential was elicited from the affected （left） hemisphere at 3 weeks after onset, but motor evoked potentials were elicited at 5 weeks after onset. These findings suggest that the connection between the injured corticospinal tract and Broca＇s area in this patient appears to be a compensation for severe motor weakness; consequently, the connection seems to disappear with motor recovery.

Diffuse axonal injury is the predominant mechanism of injuries in patients with traumatic brain injury. Neither conventional brain computed tomography nor magnetic resonance imaging has shown sufficient sensitivity in the diagnosis of diffuse axonal injury. In the current study, we attempted to demonstrate the usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging in the detection of lesion sites of diffuse axonal injury in a patient with head trauma who had been misdiagnosed as having a stroke. A 44-year-old man fell from a height of about 2 m. Brain magnetic resonance imaging （32 months after onset） showed leukomalactic lesions in the isthmus of the corpus callosum and the left temporal lobe. He presented with mild quadriparesis, intentional tremor of both hands, and trunkal ataxia. From diffusion tensor imaging results of 33 months after traumatic brain injury onset, we found diffuse axonal injury in the right corticospinal tract （centrum semiovale, pons）, both fomices （columns and crus）, and both inferior cerebellar peduncles （cerebellar portions）. We think that diffusion tensor imaging could be a useful tool in the detection of lesion sites of diffuse axonal injury in patients with head trauma.

Electrowetting on dielectric(EWOD)and dielectrowetting(DEW)are two major principles to drive droplets in digital *** is effective to manipulate(create,transport,split,and merge)conductive droplets being currently used for many biological,chemical,and optical *** can also manipulate droplets but more efficiently with dielectric(nonconductive)fluids.A digital microfluidic platform efficiently operable by both EWOD and DEW would offer higher versatility in handling a wide range of fluids,regardless of their *** this regard,this article presents a new hybrid electrode design enabling EWOD and DEW to drive various kinds of droplet fluids on a single *** addition,a slippery liquid-infused surface(SLIPS)is integrated with the hybrid *** SLIPS is well known to resist biofouling and repel sticky fluids,which endows the hybrid electrodes with much wider application *** a result,the present SLIPS-integrated hybrid electrodes facilitate actuating various kinds of fluids which would not be driven by conventional EWOD and/or DEW *** paper presents the successful transportation of not only conductive fluids including water,protein solution,glycerol,and honey but also nonconductive fluids including dodecane,silicone oil,and light and heavy crude oil,all driven by the SLIPS-integrated hybrid *** performance comparisons among solid,interdigitating,and hybrid electrodes are made by testing both conductive and nonconductive droplets.

The hepatic endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-anchored cytochromes P450(P450s)are mixedfunction oxidases engaged in the biotransformation of physiologically relevant endobiotics as well as of myriad xenobiotics of therapeutic and environmental relevance.P450 ER-content and hence function is regulated by their coordinated hemoprotein syntheses and proteolytic *** P450 proteolytic turnover occurs through a process known as ER-associated degradation(ERAD)that involves ubiquitindependent proteasomal degradation(UPD)and/or autophagic-lysosomal degradation(ALD).Herein,on the basis of available literature reports and our own recent findings of in vitro as well as in vivo experimental studies,we discuss the therapeutic and pathophysiological implications of altered P450 ERAD and its plausible clinical *** specifically(i)describe the P450 ERAD-machinery and how it may be repurposed for the generation of antigenic P450 peptides involved in P450 autoantibodypathogenesis in drug-induced acute hypersensitivity reactions and liver injury,or viral hepatitis;(ⅱ)discuss the relevance of accelerated or disrupted P450-ERAD to the pharmacological and/or toxicological effects of clinically relevant P450 drug substrates;and(ⅲ)detail the pathophysiological consequences of disrupted P450 ERAD,contributing to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)under certain synergistic cellular conditions.

Treatment of osteoarthritis(OA)by administration of corticosteroids is a commonly used method in clinics using anti-inflammatory *** administration or intra-articular injection of corticosteroids can reduce the pain and progress of cartilage degeneration,but they are usually insufficient to show local and long-term anti-inflammatory effects because of their fast clearance in the *** this study,we suggest an injectable anti-OA drug depot system for sustained drug release that provides long-term effective therapeutic *** poly(organophosphazene),which has temperature-dependent nanoparticle forming and sol-gel transition behaviors when dissolved in aqueous solution,was synthesized for triamcinolone acetonide(TCA)*** hydrophobic parts of the polymer can interact with hydrophobic parts of the TCA,the TCA was encapsulated into the self-assembled polymeric *** TCA-encapsulated polymeric nanoparticles(TePNs)were well dispersed in an aqueous solution below room temperature so that they can be easily injected as a sol state into an intra-articular ***,the TePNs solution transforms immediately to a viscose 3D hydrogel like a synovial fluid in the intra-articular region via the conducted body *** in vitro TCA release study showed sustained TCA release for six ***-time injection of the TePN hydrogel system in an early stage of OA-induced rat model showed a great inhibition effect against further OA *** OA-induced knees completely recovered as a healthy cartilage without any abnormal symptoms.
