Clinical outcomes of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder

AIM: To compare the demographics and survival rates between gallbladder adenocarcinoma(GB-adenocarcinoma) and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder(GB-NEC-SCC).METHODS: From March 2007 to September 2012,patients who underwent resection of tumor stage T2/T3 GB cancer were enrolled for this *** patients were included in this study,including 38 diagnosed with GB-adenocarcinoma and four diagnosed with *** the GB-adenocarcinoma group,a radical operation was performed in 28 patients,and ten patients underwent simple *** the GB-NEC-SCC group,a radical operation was performed in three patients,and one patient underwent simple *** analysis of the two groups was performed,including clinicopathologic features and survival ***: The median age of the patients was 68 y(range: 35-83 years) and females comprised 26/42 of the ***-adenocarcinoma patients were significantly older than GB-NEC-SCC patients(67.89 ± 11.15 vs 55.75 ± 10.31 years; P = 0.029).The median tumor size in GB-adenocarcinoma patients was 2.56 ± 1.75 cm and 3.98 ± 3.74 cm in GB-NEC-SCC patients; however,there was no significant difference between the two *** tumors > 2 cm,T stage(T2 vs T3),lymphovascular invasion,perineural invasion,lymph node metastasis and lymph node ratio showed no significant differences between the two *** overall survival rate of the 42 patients at five years was 77.0%.In the GB-adenocarcinoma group,the overall five-year survival rate was 74.8%,and survival in the GB-NEC-SCC group was 100%,which was not significantly different between the two ***: The strategy for treating patients with GB-NEC-SCC should be similar to that used for treating GB-adenocarcinoma,including radical cholecystectomy and liver resection.

GATA-3-Not Just for Th2 Cells Anymore

GATA-3 was first cloned as a T cell specific transcription factor in 1991 and its importance in the transcriptional control of T helper type 2 cell （Th2） differentiation was established in the mid to late 90＇s. A role for GATA-3 during thymic development has long implied by its continuous and regulated expression through out T lineage development, but the absolute requirement for GATA-3 during early T lymphoid commitment/survival previously precluded definitive answers to this question. Several technical breakthroughs have fueled fruitful investigation in recent years and uncovered unexpected and critical roles for GATA-3 in CD4 thymocyte survival, invariant natural killer T cell generation and function, and also in beta selection. Not only does GATA-3 participate in nearly every stage of T cell development from common lymphoid progenitor to Th2, conditional knockout studies have indicated that the influence of GATA-3 also extends beyond the immune system. Genetic effects on serum testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin in men： a Korean twin and family study

We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study to evaluate the role of genetics in determining the individual difference in total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin levels. Study participants comprised 730 Korean men consisting of 142 pairs of monozygotic twins, 191 pairs of siblings, and 259 father-offspring pairs from 270 families who participated in the Healthy Twin study. Serum concentration of total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay, and free testosterone and bioavailable testosterone were calculated using Vermeulen＇s method. Quantitative genetic analysis based on a variance decomposition model showed that the heritability of total testosterone, free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and sex hormone-binding globulin were 0.56, 0.45, 0.44, and 0.69, respectively after accounting for age and body mass index. Proportions of variance explained by age and body mass index varied across different traits, from 8% for total testosterone to 31% for sex hormone-binding globulin. Bivariate analysis showed a high degree of additive genetic correlation （p~ = 0.67） and a moderate degree of individual-specific environmental correlation （PE = 0.42） between total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin. The findings confirmed the important role of genetics in determining the individually different levels of testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin during adulthood in Korean men as found in non-Asian populations, which may suggest that common biologic control for determining testosterone level directly or indirectly through binding protein are largely shared among different populations.

Exploration of cobalt selenite-carbon composite porous nanofibers as anode for sodium-ion batteries and unveiling their conversion reaction mechanism

Porous FeS nanofibers with numerous nanovoids obtained by Kirkendall diffusion effect for use as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Porous FeS nanofibers with numerous nanovoids for use as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries were prepared by electrospinning and subsequent sulfidation. The post-treatment of the as-spun Fe（acac）3-polyacrylonitrile composite nanofibers in an air atmosphere yielded hollow Fe2O3 nanofibers due to Ostwald ripening. The ultrafine Fe2O3 nanocrystals formed at the center of the fiber diffused toward the outside of the fiber via Ostwald ripening. On sulfidation, the Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers were transformed into porous FeS nanofibers, which contained numerous nanovoids. The formation of porosity in the FeS nanofibers was driven by nanoscale Kirkendall diffusion. The porous FeS nanofibers were very structurally stable and had superior sodium-ion storage properties compared with the hollow Fe2O3 nanofibers. The discharge capacities of the porous FeS nanofibers for the Ist and 150th cycles at a current density of 500 mA.g-1 were 561 and 592 mA.h-g-1, respectively. The FeS nanofibers had final discharge capacities of 456, 437, 413, 394, 380, and 353 mA-h.g-1 at current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 5.0 A.g-1, respectively.

Preparation of Highly Crystalline Graphitic Nanocarbon for the Electro-Oxidation of Methanol

Highly crystalline graphitic nanocarbons （GNC） have been prepared by the wet-air treatment of hydrothermally- derived graphitic porous carbon. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. The experimental results revealed that the treatment temperature has a significant effect on the morphology and degree of graphitic crystallinity. When GNC was treated at 450 ~C under a wet-air atmosphere, the product （GNC-450） consisted of aggregates of silkworm-shaped carbon nanoparticles with enhanced graphitic characteristics. GNC-450 was evaluated as a catalyst support in the electro-oxidation of methanol. The Pt/GNC-450 catalyst contained smaller Pt particles and had a higher electrochemically active surface area than a commercial carbon black-supported Pt catalyst. In the electro-oxidation of methanol, the Pt/GNC-450 catalyst showed the highest performance among the Pt catalysts examined in this study. The superior catalytic performance appears to be closely related to the enhanced graphitic characteristics with highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles on the graphitic layers, which have a positive effect on the electrochemical performance.

Dioscorea batatas Decne(DBD)has been used to heal various illnesses of the kidney and intestine as an herbal medicine in *** a source of therapeutic agents,many glycoproteins have been isolated from mushrooms and plants,but the functional role of glycoprotein in intestinal epithelial wound healing has not been understood *** the present study,we investigated the wound healing potentials of the 30 kDa glycoprotein(DBD glycoprotein)isolated from DBD in human intestinal epithelial(INT-407)*** found that DBD glycoprotein(100μg·mL^-1)significantly increased the motility of INT-407 cells for 24 h by activating protein kinase C(PKC).DBD glycoprotein stimulated the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK),which is responsible for the phosphorylation of NF-κB inhibitorα(IκBα).DBD glycoprotein increased the level of profilin-1(PFN1),α-actinin and F-actin expression via activation of transcription factor,nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)during its promotion of cell *** mouse colitis was induced by adding dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)to the drinking water at a concentration of 4%(W/V)for 7 *** figured out that administration of DBD glycoprotein(10 and 20 mg·kg-1)lowers the levels of disease activity index and histological inflammation in DSS-treated ICR *** this regard,we suggest that DBD glycoprotein has ability to promote the F-actin-related migration signaling events via activation of PKC and NF-κB in intestinal epithelial cells and prevent inflammatory bowel disease.

A 79-year-old man,who had undergone liver transplantation(LT)15 years ago due to hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)related to chronic hepatitis B,was referred for a newly developed 2 cm-sized mass on his left cheek(Figure 1A).Alpha-fetoprotein had been within normal range since LT,and the patient had been on 1 mg/day *** emission tomography-computed tomography documented a focal 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in skin lesion(Figure 1B).
