Statistical Downscaling for Multi-Model Ensemble Prediction of Summer Monsoon Rainfall in the Asia-Pacific Region Using Geopotential Height Field

The 21-yr ensemble predictions of model precipitation and circulation in the East Asian and western North Pacific （Asia-Pacific） summer monsoon region （0°-50°N, 100° 150°E） were evaluated in nine different AGCM, used in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center （APCC） multi-model ensemble seasonal prediction system. The analysis indicates that the precipitation anomaly patterns of model ensemble predictions are substantially different from the observed counterparts in this region, but the summer monsoon circulations are reasonably predicted. For example, all models can well produce the interannual variability of the western North Pacific monsoon index （WNPMI） defined by 850 hPa winds, but they failed to predict the relationship between WNPMI and precipitation anomalies. The interannual variability of the 500 hPa geopotential height （GPH） can be well predicted by the models in contrast to precipitation anomalies. On the basis of such model performances and the relationship between the interannual variations of 500 hPa GPH and precipitation anomalies, we developed a statistical scheme used to downscale the summer monsoon precipitation anomaly on the basis of EOF and singular value decomposition （SVD）. In this scheme, the three leading EOF modes of 500 hPa GPH anomaly fields predicted by the models are firstly corrected by the linear regression between the principal components in each model and observation, respectively. Then, the corrected model GPH is chosen as the predictor to downscale the precipitation anomaly field, which is assembled by the forecasted expansion coefficients of model 500 hPa GPH and the three leading SVD modes of observed precipitation anomaly corresponding to the prediction of model 500 hPa GPH during a 19-year training period. The cross-validated forecasts suggest that this downscaling scheme may have a potential to improve the forecast skill of the precipitation anomaly in the South China Sea, western North Pacific and the East Asia

The conversion of methane to olefins,aromatics,and hydrogen(MTOAH)can be used to stably obtain hydrocarbons when the effect of the catalytic surface is optimized from the reaction engineering *** this study,Fe/Si C catalysts were packed into a quartz tube *** catalytic surfaces of Si C and the impregnated Fe species decreased the apparent activation energies(E_a)of methane consumption in the blank reactor between 965 and 1020℃.Consequently,the hydrocarbon yield increased by 2.4times at 1020℃.Based on the model reactions of ethane,ethylene,and acetylene mixed with hydrogen in the range of 500-1020℃,an excess amount of Fe in the reactor favored the C-C coupling reaction over the selective hydrogenation of acetylene;consequently,coke formation was favored over the hydrogenation *** gas-phase reactions and catalyst properties were optimized to increase hydrocarbon yields while reducing coke *** 0.2Fe catalyst-packed reactor(0.26 wt%Fe)resulted in a hydrocarbon yield of 7.1%and a coke selectivity of<2%when the ratio of the void space of the postcatalyst zone to the catalyst space was adjusted to be≥*** on these findings,the facile approach of decoupling the reaction zone between the catalyst surface and the gas-phase reaction can provide insights into catalytic reactor design,thereby facilitating the scale-up from the laboratory to the commercial scale.

Rational design of carbon shell-encapsulated cobalt nanospheres to enhance microwave absorption performance

Co@C core–shell nanospheres highly dispersed on carbon supports were rationally designed to improve the microwave absorbing property of the composite material, and fabricated by one pot thermal decomposition and simple annealing process. The Co nanospheres were completely encapsulated with thin carbon shells, which can effectively prevent the oxidation of the Co surface. Additionally, the particle size of Co nanospheres were properly controlled to optimize the electromagnetic property of the composite material. As a result, the lightweight Co@C/C composites with the particle size of 20 nm exhibited much enhanced microwave absorption properties. The improved microwave absorption performance is attributed mainly to the enhanced isotropic ratio and impedance matching of magnetic composites via tuning the Co particle size. Therefore, the welldesigned core-shell Co@C composite structure will provide a new insight for the development of high performance microwave absorbers.

Characteristics of Cyanate Ester and Fluorenyl Epoxy-Based Polymer-Ceramic Composites

In the field of highly integrated printed circuit board （PCB）, the heat resistant substrate with low water absorption is very important material. To get the resin composition for the high functional substrate material with low moisture absorption and high glass transition temperature （Tg） simultaneously, a fluorenyl ＂Cardo＂ epoxy was incorporated into novolac cyanate ester resin. As an optimum curing agent for the fiuorenyl epoxy, methyl nadic anhydride （MNA） was selected. Silica powders as fillers were added into the resin composition. The partial replacement of the cyanate ester resin with the fluorenyl epoxy could reduce the moisture absorption with keeping high glass transition temperature over 300 ℃. The laminate, which was fabricated from prepregs made with 40 wt% silica-filled resin composition and glass fabric, showed high Tg of 317 ℃ and low moisture absorption of 0.57%.

Short-Term Wind Power Prediction Using Fuzzy Clustering and Support Vector Regression

A sustainable production of electricity is essential for low carbon green growth in South Korea. The generation of wind power as renewable energy has been rapidly growing around the world. Undoubtedly, wind energy is unlimited in potential. However due to its own intermittency and volatility, there are difficulties in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. To cope with this, many works have been done for wind speed and power forecasting. In this paper, an SVR （support vector regression） using FCM （Fuzzy C-Means） is proposed for wind speed forecasting. This paper describes the design of an FCM based SVR to increase the prediction accuracy. Proposed model was compared with ordinary SVR model using balanced and unbalanced test data. Also, multi-step ahead forecasting result was compared. Kernel parameters in SVR are adaptively determined in order to improve forecasting accuracy. An illustrative example is given by using real-world wind farm dataset. According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method provides better forecasts of wind power.

Parameterization and Application of Storm Surge/Tide Modeling Using a Genetic Algorithm for Typhoon Periods

A genetic algorithm was used to optimize the parameters of the two-dimensional Storm Surge/Tide Operational Model （STORM） to improve sea level *** genetic algorithm was applied to nine typhoons that affected the Korean Peninsula during *** following model parameters were used：the bottom drag coefficient,the background horizontal diffusivity,Smagorinski＇s horizontal viscosity,and the sea level pressure ***,the simulation results using the optimized,mean,and median parameter values improved sea level *** four estimated parameters improved the sea level prediction by 76% and 54% in the bias and root mean square error for Typhoon Kalmaegi （0807） in 2008,***-month simulations of February and August 2008 were also improved using the estimated *** study demonstrates that parameter optimization on STORM can improve sea level prediction.

Estimation of marine winds in and around typhoons using multi-platform satellite observations: Application to Typhoon Soulik (2018)

Estimating horizontal winds in and around typhoons is important for improved monitoring and prediction of typhoons and mitigating their ***,we present a new algorithm for estimating typhoon winds using multiple satellite observations and its application to Typhoon Soulik(2018).Four kinds of satellite remote sensing data,along with their relationship to typhoon intensity,derived statistically from hundreds of historical typhoon cases,were merged into the final product of typhoon wind(MT wind):(1)geostationarysatellite-based infrared images(IR wind),(2)passive microwave sounder(MW wind),(3)feature-tracked atmospheric motion vectors,and (4)scatterometer-based sea surface winds(SSWs).The algorithm was applied to two cases(A and B)of Typhoon Soulik and validated against SSWs independently retrieved from active microwave synthetic aperture radar(SAR)and microwave radiometer(AMSR2)images,and vertical profiles of wind speed derived from reanalyzed data and dropsonde *** Case A(open ocean),the algorithm estimated the realistic maximum wind,radius of maximum wind,and radius of 15 m/s,which could not be estimated using the reanalysis data,demonstrating reasonable and practical ***,for Case B(when the typhoon rapidly weakened just before making landfall in the Korean Peninsula),the algorithm significantly overestimated the parameters,primarily due to the overestimation of typhoon *** study highlights that realistic typhoon winds can be monitored continuously in real-time using multiple satellite observations,particularly when typhoon intensity is reasonably well predicted,providing timely analysis results and products of operational importance.

Increasing sulfur utilization in lithium-sulfur batteries by a Co-MOF-74@MWCNT interlayer

To improve lithium-sulfur battery performance,Co-MOF-74 has been applied for the first time as an interlayer with multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs).Co-MOF-74@MWCNT was synthesized using a solvothermal *** fabrication of Co-MOF-74@MWCNT was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,thermogravimetric analysis,and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller *** interlayer was fabricated using a filtration *** batteries were prepared using a CoMOF-74@MWCNT interlayer and an MWCNT interlayer and subsequently investigated via cyclic voltammetry ***-MOF-74 promotes a redox reaction and shows a small peak at 1.85 V.A symmetric and full cell test revealed that the Co-MOF-74@MWCNT cell enables a faster redox reaction and higher capacity than that of the MWCNT *** 15 cycles,the Co-MOF-74@MWCNT cell achieved a value of 1112 mAh g^(-1),which is 26% greater than that of the MWCNT cell(880 mAh g^(-1)) at 0.2 *** profile testing showed that the reason for the higher capacity of the Co-MOF-74@MWCNT cell is that it promotes the conversion of Li_(2)S_(2) to Li_(2)*** electrochemical analyses confirmed that the Co-MOF-74@MWCNT interlayer acts not only as a physical and chemical barrier but also promotes the transformation of Li_(2)S_(2) to Li_(2)S.
