Tailored Functional Recipe (TFR) Approach to Delay the Progression of HIV to AIDS among People Living with HIV (PLWH) in Abuja, Nigeria

Background: HIV/AIDS is a pandemic disease and its scourge has had a devastating impact on health, nutrition, food security and overall socioeconomic development in affected countries. Moreover, intervention programmes, which simply employ antiretroviral drugs, have been found to lack effectiveness particularly when the patient is under-nourished. Aim and Purpose: This presented pilot intervention provides evidence that suggests use of local resources as therapeutic nutrition. This can act as a fundamental part of the comprehensive package of care at the country level. Methodology: Local ingredients, which were known for their availability, accessibility, micro and macro-nutrient strengths were selected and optimised into a nutritional functional meal (Amtewa). Daily consumption was ascertained to assess its effects on nutritional status and biomedical indices of the study participants (n = 100) who were/were not taking Highly Active Anti-retroviral Therapy (HAART). Findings: Mean CD4 count for ART-Test group at baseline and sixth months increased by 40.8 cells/mm3 while the ART-Control group decreased 18.12 cells/mm3. This positive outcome qualified Amtewa meal to the next phase of intervention (400 participants) to ascertain its effectiveness on health status of HIV infected subjects and appraise its position within the National Health Services framework as innovative approach to attenuate the progression of HIV to AIDS in Nigeria. Conclusion: Amtewa-based approach in HIV management is innovative, culturally relevant, reliable and requiring low technology in order to assure compliance, sustainability and cost effectiveness. Although the achieved results take the form of specific technology, it suggests that a prolong consumption of the intervention meal (Amtewa) will be suitable to sustain the gained improvements in MUAC and CD4 cell counts thereby slowing the progression of the disease.

Increasing effective panicle number per plant(EPN)is one approach to increase yield potential in ***,molecular mechanisms underlying EPN remain *** this study,we integrated mapbased cloning and genome-wide association analysis to identify the EPN4 gene,which is allelic to NARROW LEAF1(NAL1).Overexpression lines containing the Teqing allele(TQ)of EPN4 had significantly increased ***-EPN4^(TQ) in japonica(geng)cultivar Lemont(LT)exhibited significantly improved EPN but decreased grain number and flag leaf size relative to *** analysis indicated that accessions with EPN4-1 had medium EPN,medium grain number,and medium grain weight,but had the highest grain yield among seven haplotypes,indicating that EPN4-1 is an elite haplotype of EPN4 for positive coordination of the three components of grain ***,accessions carrying the combination of EPN4-1 and haplotype GNP1-6 of GNP1 for grain number per panicle showed higher grain yield than those with other allele ***,pyramiding of EPN4-1 and GNP1-6 could be a preferred approach to obtain high yield potential in breeding.

Hematological Alterations in an Eastern Sudanese Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Population

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), associated with a slow and progressive loss of kidney function over a period of several years, is an important clinical disaster with an increasing rate of morbidity and mortality especially in the least developed countries. Many hematological parameters are thought to alter dramatically during the course of the disease. These include white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Methods: We tried, retrospectively, to evaluate the peripheral blood hematological alterations in a group of patients undergoing hemodialysis in an eastern Sudan dialysis center to add local medical information. Results: Anemia (Low hemoglobin and hematocrit) was detected in 94% of the patients’ group. Mean Erythrocyte count (3.32vs.4.76 (×109/L)), Hemoglobin concentration (9.4vs.13 (g/dl)), Hematocrit (28.7vs.38.7 (L/L)) and platelet count (296 vs. 238 (×109/L)) were significantly lower in the patients’ group than in the control group (P-values Conclusion: Five out of eight studied parameters (Red cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, and platelets count) have shown a significant alteration in CKD patients. As the complete blood count (CBC) test is the most utilized test in clinical laboratory practice, these alterations may be considered as early indicators for CKD. Furthermore, all patients with CKD must be routinely checked for these alterations.

The nutritional quality of rice is a major concern,along with the need to enhance productivity to feed the continuously growing ***,there is a requirement to breed high-yielding rice varieties with improved nutritional quality that can help combat malnutrition,a global health ***,breeding approaches have played a significant role in increasing rice yield while enhancing its nutritional *** addition to traditional breeding techniques,other recent approaches,such as genetic engineering,gene editing,omics methods,and agronomic practices,must also be employed to meet the nutritional needs of the current *** this review,we offered detailed information on the development of nutritionally improved rice varieties through the enhancement of protein content,microand macronutrients,vitamins,and oil quality using genetic engineering *** also identified QTLs associated with amino acids,proteins,and micronutrients in ***,omics approaches provide a range of tools and techniques for effectively exploring resources and understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in trait *** branches,including transcriptomics,proteomics,ionomics,and metabolomics,are efficiently utilized for improving rice ***,by utilizing the information obtained from these techniques and incorporating all of these recent approaches,we can effectively modify the rice genome,directly enhancing the nutritional value of rice *** will help address the challenges of malnutrition in the years to come.

A Coordinated Search Algorithm for a Lost Target on the Plane

Concepts in search theory have developed since World War *** study of search plans has found considerable interest among searchers due to its wide applications in our *** for lost targets either located or moved is often a time-critical issue,especially when the target is very *** many commercial and scientific missions at sea,it is of crucial importance to find lost targets *** illustrate a technique known as coordinated search,that completely characterizes the search for a randomly located target on a *** idea is to avoid wasting time looking for a missing *** searchers or robots start from the center of a circle to search out a lost target,the first searcher looks for the target on the right side of the circular area,and the second one looks for it on the left *** time taken to detect the target is obtained by assuming the target’s position has a symmetric *** procedures to facilitate the detection of the target are presented as an algorithm and as a *** application demonstrates the applicability of this search technique and the associated decrease in search *** effectiveness is illustrated by numerical results,which indicates considerable promise.

Genetic mechanism of heterosis for rice milling and appearance quality in an elite rice hybrid

Development of hybrid rice with high yield and grain quality is a goal of rice *** investigate the genetic mechanism of heterosis for rice milling and appearance quality in indica/xian rice,QTL mapping was conducted using 1061 recombinant inbred lines(RILs)derived from a cross of the xian rice cultivars Quan 9311B(Q9311B)and Wu-shan-si-miao(WSSM),and a backcross F_(1)(BC_(1)F_(1)) population developed by crossing the RILs with Quan 9311A(Q9311A),combined with phenotyping in two *** F_(1) hybrid(Q9311A×WSSM)showed various degrees of heterosis for milling and appearance quality.A total of 142 main-effect QTL(M-QTL)and 407 pairs of epistatic QTL(E-QTL)were identified for five milling and appearance quality traits and grain yield per plant(GYP)in the RIL,BC_(1)F_(1) and mid-parental heterosis(H_(MP)) *** detection of QTL in three populations revealed that most additive loci detected in the RILs did not show heterotic effects,but some of them did contribute to BC_(1)F_(1) trait *** heterosis of GYP,single-locus overdominance and epistasis were the main contributors to heterosis for milling and appearance *** contributed more to the heterosis for milling quality than to that for appearance ***(four)QTL regions harboring opposite(consistent)directions of favorable allele effects for GYP and grain quality were identified,indicating the presence of partial genetic overlaps between GYP and grain *** strategies are proposed to develop hybrid rice with high yield and good grain quality:1)pyramiding favorable alleles with consistent directions of gene effects for GYP and grain quality at the M-QTL on different chromosomes;2)introgressing favorable alleles for GYP and grain quality into the parents and then pyramiding and fixing these additive effects in hybrids;and 3)pyramiding overdominant and dominant loci and minimizing or eliminating underdominant loci from the parents.

Autism spectrum disorder(ASD)is a challenging and complex neurodevelopment syndrome that affects the child’s language,speech,social skills,communication skills,and logical thinking *** early detection of ASD is essential for delivering effective,timely *** facial features such as a lack of eye contact,showing uncommon hand or body movements,bab-bling or talking in an unusual tone,and not using common gestures could be used to detect and classify ASD at an early *** study aimed to develop a deep transfer learning model to facilitate the early detection of ASD based on facial fea-tures.A dataset of facial images of autistic and non-autistic children was collected from the Kaggle data repository and was used to develop the transfer learning AlexNet(ASDDTLA)*** model achieved a detection accuracy of 87.7%and performed better than other established ASD detection ***,this model could facilitate the early detection of ASD in clinical practice.
