Anatomy.Education: Perceptions and Experiences of Nigerian Anatomists towards Contributing to Programme and Career Advancements

Anatomy. a foremost basic medical science (BMS) has evolved in content and context, while remaining the most fundamental BMS subject. Stakeholders have continually.made efforts especially.in recent time to achieve an evolution of this subject. The primary.aim of this work was to study.the perceptions and experiences of Anatomists towards contributing to programme and career advancements. Following ethical approval, structured questionnaire was administered to Nigerian anatomists using a Google form. It is a total population study. The questionnaire had 13 sections, with each section addressing a theme that was integral to the subject of research interest. The last section collected free responses as qualitative information. After indicating informed consent, 106 anatomists properly.completed and returned the questionnaires. Statistical and quantitative analy.es of results were done. The most popular field amongst respondents was Neuroscience (60.9%);followed by.Histology.or Microscopic Anatomy.(53.6%), Embry.logy.or developmental anatomy.(35.5%), Gross anatomy.(34.5%) and Histochemistry.(30.9%). About half of Nigerian anatomists involved in the study.had a PhD degree. Training emphasized the cognitive domains the most. Consequently. emphasis should be laid on the psy.homotor (skills) and the affective domain (attitude) to improve capacity. competences, and the job prospects of trainees. The consensus was that the programme trained students and prepared graduates as medical educators, scientists, and researchers. Anatomy.has significant potential to contribute to development with proper programme design, emphasis on research, teaching and applied services competencies, effective policy.formulation and implementation and adherence to best practices.

Modelling joint distribution of tree diameter and height using Frank and Plackett copulas

Bivariate distribution models are veritable tools for improving forest stand volume *** accuracy.depends on the method of ***-date,most bivariate distributions in forestry.have been constructed either with normal or Plackett *** this study.the accuracy.of the Frank copula for constructing bivariate distributions was *** effectiveness of Frank and Plackett copulas were evaluated on seven distribution models using data from temperate and tropical *** bivariate distributions include:Burr III,Burr XII,Logit-Logistic,Log-Logistic,generalized Weibull,Weibull and *** likelihood was used to fit the models to the joint distribution of diameter and height data of Pinus pinaster(184 plots),Pinus radiata(96 plots),Eucaly.tus camaldulensis(85 plots)and Gmelina arborea(60 plots).Models were evaluated based on negative log-likelihood(-ΛΛ).The result show that Frank-based models were more suitable in describing the joint distribution of diameter and height than most of their Plackett-based *** bivariate Burr III distributions had the overall best *** Frank copula is therefore recommended for the construction of more useful bivariate distributions in forestry.

Contemporary.Global Issue of Rising Water Scarcity.for Agriculture: The Quest for Effective and Feasible Soil Moisture and Free-Water Surface Conservation Strategies

There is the need to take seriously.the task of conserving soil moisture in agricultural fields and free-water surfaces in reservoirs, especially.in recent y.ars of climate change. Many.strategies exist for achieving this task and improving the productivity.of arable soils. These strategies traditionally.come under biological and phy.ical or mechanical measures. Some other relatively.new techniques operate neither on phy.ical nor on biological principle. All these measures which operate on different principles frequently.overlap. The principles involved, together with the prospects and constraints of the key.techniques of conserving soil moisture found in the literature, are reviewed in this paper. Among other considerations, the effectiveness and/or practicability.of any.one of the techniques depend upon soil ty.e, topography. climate, scale of production, level of technology. and socio-economic status. Such agronomic practices as conservation tillage and live vegetation mulch that maintain infiltration rates often appear to be more beneficial in the long run than engineering structures, especially.those that lead to blocking of waterway. on the soil surface. However, this review reveals that none of the soil moisture conservation strategies could be credited as universally.applicable. Consequently. an integrated approach to soil water management and conservation, where feasible, is considered more appropriate. This is because the different principles involved in the techniques identified to be compatible would readily.complement and strengthen one another. Such a multi-mechanistic approach is expected to result in improved efficacy.in conserving water resources in soils and open reservoirs.

DPPH Radical Scavenging Capacity.of Phenolic Extracts from African y.m Bean (Sphenosty.is stenocarpa)

The phenolic extracts of the seeds of African y.m bean (Sphenosty.is stenocarpa) were studied using different extraction solvents (70% ethanol, 80% acetone and acidic 70% acetone) and two heat treatment methods (dry.heating on a hot plate with acid-washed sea sand at 135℃ for 25 min and wet heating in an autoclave at 120℃ for 20 min). The study.examined the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and condensed tannin content (CTC) of the seed extracts, as well as their free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties. The raw African y.m bean seed was dry.heated in air oven at 100℃ for 5 min (control). Heat treatments application affected the phenolic contents of the seeds significantly.(p y.of the phenolics were done using 2,2-dipheny.- 1-picry.hy.razy. (DPPH). The effectiveness of the extract was determined using DPPH at 50 mg/g, 10 mg/g and 5 mg/g of the extracts. At 5 mg/g, the extract was most effective indicating that higher concentration of extract gave higher antioxidant activity. The seed has high antioxidant capacity.and an appreciable amount of phenolic extracts.

Study.of Criticality.Safety.and Neutronic Performance for a 348-Fuel-Pin Ghana Research Reactor-1 LEU Core Using MCNP Code

The National Nuclear Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy.Commission is undertaking steps to convert the Ghana Research Reactor-1 from HEU Core to LEU. The proposed LEU core consists of 12.5% enriched Uo2 fuel elements clad in Zircaloy.4 alloy. This is done in collaboration with Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactor. The versatile MCNP code was used to analy.e the neutronics parameters given in the SAR of HEU core, thereby.characterizing the core. Subsequently. the LEU core was indentified with necessary.changes to the HEU MCNP model. It was ascertained that the reactivity.for the LEU core with the same number of fuel pins as the HEU was inadequate, hence the fuel pins were increased from 344 to 348. The neutron flux at the irradiation sites was found to be below the nominal value at full power for the LEU and hence the nominal power was increased to 34 kW for a nominal flux value of 1 × 1012 n/cm2.s. The parameters investigated for the HEU and LEU are shown in this paper.

This realization opens up completely.new strategies for the development of try.anosomes vaccines, allowing approaches that parenteral delivery.forms would not permit. The target of the study.was to compare the haematological changes and immunological responses of try.anosomiasis model sy.tems (mice and rats) inoculated orally.and intraperitoneally.and to observe the afterward effect of a controlled drug [Isometamidium chloride (ISM)] in the restoration of these initial parameters. ong>Methods:ong> To achieve this, a total of 40 rodents (20 rats and 20 mice) were purchased, then grouped into two [sixteen y.unger (1 - 5 weeks) and older (7 - 15 weeks) groups each]. They.were further sub-grouped into five each. Body.weights, Parasitaemia and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were taken before, after inoculation and after treatment with ISM at 4 mg/kg. ong>Results:ong> Based on presumptive clinical diagnosis, all rodents inoculated intraperitoneally.showed clinical signs of fluctuations in weight, PCV and parasitaemia levels before, after inoculations and after treatment compared to those inoculated orally.with a significant difference (P observed. Both y.ung and older rodents also responded differently.to the inoculants and to the different methods of inoculation. But more deaths were recorded among the mice when compared to the rats. ong>Conclusion: ong>Although these non-transgenic models would not have offered a completely.new methods to vaccine development, their differences in response to various methods of inoculations is an indication of an exciting research processes and could offer desired results, particularly.where transgenic rodents are employ.d.

Folate Enrichment of ogi(a Fermented Cereal Gruel) Using Folate Producing Starter Cultures

This study.was aimed at selecting starter cultures for bio-enriching ogi (fermented cereal gruel) using folate-producing microorganisms. The folate-producing microorganisms were isolated by.incorporating folate analogue, methotrexate in the isolation medium and further screened for folate production by.growth in Folic Acid Casei Medium. Folate production was quantified using 3-aminophenol spectrophotometric method. Folate-producing lactic acid bacteria from fermenting maize slurry.were species of Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Pediococcus and Leuconostoc while y.ast isolates were mainly.species of Candida and Saccharomy.es. However, Lactobacillus plantarum X13, Pediococcus pentosaceus L73, Candida parapsilosis y.7 and Candida tropicalis y.4 were used as starter cultures singly.and in combination for the fermentation and production of ogi. The highest folate concentration, 30.97 ± 0.37 μg/ml, was observed after 24 h of the co-fermentation of maize slurry.with Lactobacillus plantarum X13 and Candida tropicalis y.4. This represents a triple fold of the folate concentration observed in unfermented maize slurry. The pH of the fermenting maize slurry.was observed to decrease from 6.12 to 3.60, while the reducing sugars and the titratable acidities were observed to increase as fermentation progressed. Sensory.evaluation of the ogi samples after fermentation showed high general acceptability.comparable to the naturally.fermented ogi as regards to colour, taste, flavour, aroma and texture. The data made available in this study.suggest the possibility.of folate enrichment of ogi and its use as a vehicle for increasing folate availability.to consumers thereby.preventing folate deficiency.diseases prevalent in many.African countries.
