A compositional function hybridization of PSO and GWO for solving well placement optimisation problem

Advances in technology and optimisation are helping to improve decision making in the oil and gas ***,most of the traditional metaheuristic algorithms applied in well placement optimisation problems suffer from extensive parameter experimentations and local optimum trapping *** couples with the complex and heterogeneous nature of hydrocarbon reservoirs and increased decision variables poses severe simulation process *** study considered a functional composition integration approach to formulate a robust hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called *** HGWO-PSO leverages on the strengths of Grey Wolf Optimiser(GWO)and Particle Swarm Optimisation(PSO)and the Clerc's parameter setting considerations.A rigorous approach which enforces regulatory agreed minimum well spacing was incorporated in the optimisation *** models ranging from unimodal to multimodal spatial systems were used as examples to test the explorative and exploitative capabilities of the *** this paper we show the performance curve and statistical analysis of HGWO-PSO as a well placement algorithm and compares its performance with that of standalone PSO,and GWO and the traditional Genetic Algorithm(GA).Results revealed that the HGWO-PSO demonstrated comparative performances in terms of exploration and exploitation obtaining the best optimal solutions which give highest contractor's NPVs in majority of cases ***,the means and standard deviations for HGWO-PSO among the various runs showed consistent and efficient *** Wilcoxon signed rank test conducted gave very low p-values suggesting uniqueness of HGWO-PSO from the other metaheuristic ***,the computational speed of HGWO-PSO was relatively better as compared to the individual GWO and PSO in most the test *** simulation results for all test cases confirm that implementation of HGWO-PSO can cause considerable improvement in locations of wells even in hete

Numerical modeling and parametric sensitivity analysis of heat transfer and two-phase oil and water flow characteristics in horizontal and inclined flowlines using OpenFOAM

Estimating the oil-water temperatures in flowlines is challenging especially in deepwater and ultra-deepwater offshore applications where issues of flow assurance and dramatic heat transfer are likely to occur due to the temperature difference between the fluids and the surroundings. Heat transfer analysis is very important for the prediction and prevention of deposits in oil and water flowlines, which could impede the flow and give rise to huge financial losses. Therefore, a 3D mathematical model of oil-water Newtonian flow under non-isothermal conditions is established to explore the complex mechanisms of the two-phase oil-water transportation and heat transfer in different flowline inclinations. In this work, a non-isothermal two-phase flow model is first modified and then implemented in the InterFoam solver by introducing the energy equation using OpenFOAM® code. The Low Reynolds Number (LRN) k-ε turbulence model is utilized to resolve the turbulence phenomena within the oil and water mixtures. The flow patterns and the local heat transfer coefficients (HTC) for two-phase oil-water flow at different flowlines inclinations (0°, +4°, +7°) are validated by the experimental literature results and the relative errors are also compared. Global sensitivity analysis is then conducted to determine the effect of the different parameters on the performance of the produced two-phase hydrocarbon systems for effective subsea fluid transportation. Thereafter, HTC and flow patterns for oil-water flows at downward inclinations of 4°, and 7° can be predicted by the models. The velocity distribution, pressure gradient, liquid holdup, and temperature variation at the flowline cross-sections are simulated and analyzed in detail. Consequently, the numerical model can be generally applied to compute the global properties of the fluid and other operating parameters that are beneficial in the management of two-phase oil-water transportation.

Soil quality estimation using environmental covariates and predictive models:an example from tropical soils of Nigeria

The C-F bond is one of the strongest in organic chemistry. It is responsible for the great stability of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly referred to as “PFAS”, a group of man-made chemicals that include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Thermal stability, surface activity, dielectric characteristics, chemical resistance, and inertness are just a few of the technical advantages that this group has over hydrocarbons, and since the 1950s, these chemicals have been largely utilized in a variety of domestic and industrial endeavors. The hydrophilic and lipophilic nature of this class of chemicals accounts for its uniqueness. Up until today, the chemistry and ecotoxicology of these chemicals continue to emerge. Issues concerning the destructive power of ignorance expedited by an ineffective regulatory institution continue to show that manufacturing chemicals are insufficient without giving serious thought to issues of openness and humanity’s awareness of its own safety. When discussing the nature of humanity and how it can be defined or redefined, it is important to allude to the significance of integrating business with ethics in its various forms. This paper highlights the importance of holding polluters accountable for PFAS contamination cleanup costs while emphasizing the need for chemical manufacturers to test and disclose the health and environmental effects of PFAS compounds. In addition, the sources, types, properties, applications, distribution, toxicological implications, regulations, and analytical methods associated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are explored. The effectiveness of the remedial methods described in this paper needs to be progressively tested while exploring other sustainable approaches.

An Assessment of Indoor Acoustic Condition in Students Hostels within Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria

It has been hypothesized that objective assessment for building acoustic conditions only may not always be representative of the users’ perception in occupied indoor spaces. This study objectively and subjectively examined indoor acoustic condition in rooms within students’ hostels in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. The objective assessment considered the physical measurement of sound pressure level in the rooms in relation to the rooms’ physical characteristics like window to external wall area and window to floor area ratios. The subjective assessment considered the occupants’ perception of the acoustic condition in the rooms in relation to their personal characteristics like age, gender, body mass index, metabolic rate, and body skin area. The sound pressure level was measured in each of the randomly selected 44 rooms at 15 minute intervals between 7 hours and 19 hours daily through a period of eight weeks. The measurement was done with High Accuracy Digital Sound Noise Level Data Loggers placed at work plane at the centre of the rooms. The geometry of the rooms was documented through physical measurements. All the occupants of the selected rooms as well as the two adjoining rooms, amounting to 696 respondents, were purposively selected to fill a questionnaire regarding activities carried out in the rooms, the frequency of fenestration opening, the personal characteristics of the occupants and the rooms’ occupancy ratio. This study established a strong correlation between the objective and subjective assessments of the acoustic condition in the spaces. Moreover, out of all the occupants’ personal characteristics considered, it was the age that has a relationship with the occupants’ perception of the acoustic condition that is closest to significant *** relationship between their perception and measured sound pressure level was slightly more pronounced among the male gender than the female with correlation coefficients of 0.115 and 0.096 respectively.
