Soleus arthrogenic muscle inhibition following acute lateral ankle sprain correlates with symptoms and ankle disability but not with postural control

Background:Acute lateral ankle sprains(ALAS)are associated with long-term impairments and instability tied to altered neural excitability.Arthrogenic muscle inhibition(AMI)has been observed in this population;however,relationships with injury-related impairments are unclear,potentially due to the resting,prone position in which AMI is typically measured.Assessing AMI during bipedal stance may provide a better understanding of this relationship.Methods:AMI was assessed in 38 young adults(19 ALAS within 72 h of injury:10 males,21.4±2.7 years;19 healthy controls:10 males,21.9±2.2 years;mean±SD)using the Hoffmann reflex(H-reflex)during bipedal stance.Electrical stimulation was administered to identify the _(max)imal H-reflex(H_(max))and _(max)imal motor response(M_(max))from the soleus,fibularis longus,and tibialis anterior muscles.The primary outcome measure was the H_(max)/M_(max) ratio.Secondary outcomes included acute symptoms(pain and swelling),postural control during bipedal stance,and self-reported function.Results:No significant group-by-limb interactions were observed for any muscle.However,a significant group main effect was observed in the soleus muscle(F(1,35)=6.82,p=0.013),indicating significantly lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios following ALAS(0.38±0.20)compared to healthy controls(0.53±0.16).Furthermore,lower H_(max)/M_(max) ratios in the soleus significantly correlated with acute symptoms and self-reported function but not with postural control.Conclusion:This study supports previous evidence of AMI in patients with ALAS,providing insight into neurophysiologic impacts of musculoskeletal injury.Our results suggest that assessing AMI in a standing position following acute injury may provide valuable insight into how AMI develops and guide potential therapeutic options to curb and offset the formation of joint instability.

Evolution of nonmetallic inclusions in 80-t 9CrMoCoB large-scale ingots during electroslag remelting process

In combination with theoretical calculations,experiments were conducted to investigate the evolution behavior of nonmetallic inclusions(NMIs)during the manufacture of large-scale heat-resistant steel ingots using 9CrMoCoB heat-resistant steel and CaF_(2)–CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–B_(2)O_(3)electroslag remelting(ESR)-type slag in an 80-t industrial ESR furnace.The main types of NMI in the consumable electrode comprised pure alumina,a multiphase oxide consisting of an Al_(2)O_(3)core and liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO shell,and M_(23)C_(6)carbides with an MnS core.The Al_(2)O_(3)and MnS inclusions had higher precipitation temperatures than the M_(23)C_(6)-type carbide under equilibrium and nonequilibrium solidification processes.Therefore,inclusions can act as nucleation sites for carbide layer precipitation.The ESR process completely removed the liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO oxide and MnS inclusion with a carbide shell,and only the Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions and Al_(2)O_(3)core with a carbide shell occupied the remelted ingot.The M_(23)C_(6)-type carbides in steel were determined as Cr_(23)C_(6)based on the analysis of transmission electron microscopy results.The substitution of Cr with W,Fe,or/and Mo in the Cr_(23)C_(6)lattice caused slight changes in the lattice parameter of the Cr_(23)C_(6)carbide.Therefore,Cr_(21.34)Fe_(1.66)C_(6),(Cr_(19)W_(4)C_(6),Cr_(18.4)Mo_(4.6)C_(6),and Cr_(16)Fe_(5)Mo_(2)C_(6)can match the fraction pattern of Cr_(23)C_(6)carbide.The Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions in the remelted ingot formed due to the reduction of CaO,SiO_(2),and MnO components in the liquid inclusion.The increased Al content in liquid steel or the higher supersaturation degree of Al_(2)O_(3)precipitation in the remelted ingot than that in the electrode can be attributed to the evaporation of CaF_(2)and the increase in CaO content in the ESR-type slag.

Programmable directional color dynamics using plasmonics

Adaptive multicolor filters have emerged as key components for ensuring color accuracy and resolution in outdoor visual devices.However,the current state of this technology is still in its infancy and largely reliant on liquid crystal devices that require high voltage and bulky structural designs.Here,we present a multicolor nanofilter consisting of multilayered‘active’plasmonic nanocomposites,wherein metallic nanoparticles are embedded within a conductive polymer nanofilm.These nanocomposites are fabricated with a total thickness below 100 nm using a‘lithography-free’method at the wafer level,and they inherently exhibit three prominent optical modes,accompanying scattering phenomena that produce distinct dichroic reflection and transmission colors.Here,a pivotal achievement is that all these colors are electrically manipulated with an applied external voltage of less than 1 V with 3.5 s of switching speed,encompassing the entire visible spectrum.Furthermore,this electrically programmable multicolor function enables the effective and dynamic modulation of the color temperature of white light across the warm-to-cool spectrum(3250 K-6250 K).This transformative capability is exceptionally valuable for enhancing the performance of outdoor optical devices that are independent of factors such as the sun’s elevation and prevailing weather conditions.

MoP nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes as sulfur host for advanced lithium-sulfur batteries

The low electrical conductivity of sulfur,strong volume expansion,shuttle effect,and sluggish redox reactions in Li-S batteries limit their practical application.MoP nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes(MoP/NC NTs)were synthesized using MoO_(3) nanorods as templates via a polypyrrole coating,heat-carbonization,MoO_(3) partial reduction,ammonia washing,and phosphorization.The MoP/NC NTs had a hollow nanostructure with a high specific surface area,which can alleviate the volume expansion of the cathode and the shuttle effect of polysulfides.The encapsulated MoP nanoparticles can anchor the polysulfides and enhance the redox reaction kinetics.Thus,the MoP/NC NTs combined with sulfur(MoP/S/NC NTs)exhibited 440.8 mAh·g^(-1) over 500 cycles at 1.0 A·g^(-1) with a decay rate of 0.06%per cycle.The density functional theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed that MoP/NC NTs could anchor polysulfides and alleviate the shuttle effect by chemical interactions.This study supplies a novel route to prepare nanoparticle-embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes for advanced Li-S battery.

A comprehensive review on the resynthesis of ternary cathode active materials from the leachate of Li-ion batteries

This review highlights the importance of recovering valuable metals from spent Li-ion battery(LIB) cathodes through the resynthesis of cathode active materials(CAMs). The resynthesis process of CAMs, a promising recycling method that directly produces CAM precursors from LIB leachate, is explored. This process encompasses six key steps, including pretreatment, leaching, purification, adjustment of metal concentrations, precursor synthesis, and sintering. The review also investigates the potential introduction of impurity elements during CAM resynthesis and provides tolerance levels for these impurities based on thorough reference analysis. Additionally, it addresses challenges related to the commercialization of the resynthesis process. Notably, this review represents the first comprehensive assessment of CAM resynthesis, including the systematic evaluation of 12 impurity elements(Fe, Li, Al, Cu, C, P, F, Na, Cl, S, Mg,and Zn). Overall, this comprehensive review is poised to support the commercial development of resynthesized CAMs by offering valuable guidelines for managing impurities and streamlining the purification process.

Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein(N-WASP)promotes distant metastasis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma via activation of LOXL2

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)is one of the most aggressive solid malignancies.A specific mechanism of its metastasis has not been established.In this study,we investigated whether Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein(N-WASP)plays a role in distant metastasis of PDAC.We found that N-WASP is markedly expressed in clinical patients with PDAC.Clinical analysis showed a notably more distant metastatic pattern in the N-WASP-high group compared to the N-WASP-low group.N-WASP was noted to be a novel mediator of epithelialmesenchymal transition(EMT)via gene expression profile studies.Knockdown of N-WASP in pancreatic cancer cells significantly inhibited cell invasion,migration,and EMT.We also observed positive association of lysyl oxidase-like 2(LOXL2)and focal adhesion kinase(FAK)with the N-WASP-mediated response,wherein EMT and invadopodia function were modulated.Both N-WASP and LOXL2 depletion significantly reduced the incidence of liver and lung metastatic lesions in orthotopic mouse models of pancreatic cancer.These results elucidate a novel role for N-WASP signaling associated with LOXL2 in EMT and invadopodia function,with respect to regulation of intercellular communication in tumor cells for promoting pancreatic cancer metastasis.These findings may aid in the development of therapeutic strategies against pancreatic cancer.

Recent trends in the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease in South Korea,2010-2018

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)was previously regarded as a Western disease;however,its incidence is increasing in the East.The epidemiology of IBD in Asia differs significantly from the patterns in the West.AIM To comprehensively investigate the epidemiology of IBD in South Korea,inclu-ding its incidence,prevalence,medication trends,and outcomes.METHODS We analyzed claims data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service and Rare and Intractable Diseases(RIDs),operated by the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea.Patients with IBD were identified based on the International Classification of Diseases,Tenth Revision,and RID diagnostic codes for Crohn’s disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC)from 2010 to 2018.RESULTS In total,14498 and 31409 patients were newly diagnosed with CD and UC,respectively,between 2010 and 2018.The annual average incidence of CD was 3.11 cases per 105 person-years,and that of UC was 6.74 cases per 10^(5) person-years.Since 2014,the incidence rate of CD has been stable,while that of UC has steadily increased,shifting the peak age group from 50-year-olds in 2010 to 20-year-olds in 2018.The CD and UC prevalence increased consistently over the study period;the use of 5-aminosali-cylates and corticosteroids gradually decreased,while that of immunomodulators and biologics steadily increased in both CD and UC.The clinical outcomes of IBD,such as hospitalization and surgery,decreased during the study period.CONCLUSION The CD incidence has been stable since 2014,but that of UC has increased with a shift to a younger age at peak incidence between 2010 and 2018.IBD clinical outcomes improved over time,with increased use of immunomodu-lators and biologics.

Structural plasticity is critical for the functional diversity of neurons in the brain.Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE)is the most commonly used model for multiple sclerosis(MS),successfully mimicking its key pathological features(inflammation,demyelination,axonal loss,and gliosis)and clinical symptoms(motor and non-motordysfunctions).Recentstudieshave demonstrated the importance of synaptic plasticity in EAE pathogenesis.In the present study,we investigated the features of behavioral alteration and hippocampal structural plasticity in EAE-affected mice in the early phase(11 days post-immunization,DPI)and chronic phase(28DPI).EAE-affected mice exhibited hippocampus-related behavioral dysfunction in the open field test during both early and chronic phases.Dendritic complexity was largely affected in the cornu ammonis 1(CA1)and CA3 apical and dentate gyrus(DG)subregions of the hippocampus during the chronic phase,while this effect was only noted in the CA1 apical subregion in the early phase.Moreover,dendritic spine density was reduced in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 apical/basal and DG subregions in the early phase of EAE,but only reduced in the DG subregion during the chronic phase.Furthermore,mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines(Il1β,Tnfα,and Ifnγ)and glial cell markers(Gfap and Cd68)were significantly increased,whereas the expression of activity-regulated cytoskeletonassociated protein(ARC)was reduced during the chronic phase.Similarly,exposure to the aforementioned cytokines in primary cultures of hippocampal neurons reduced dendritic complexity and ARC expression.Primary cultures of hippocampal neurons also showed significantly reduced extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)phosphorylation upon treatment with proinflammatory cytokines.Collectively,these results suggest that autoimmune neuroinflammation alters structural plasticity in the hippocampus,possibly through the ERK-ARC pathway,indicating that this alteration may be associated with hippocampal dysfunctions in EAE.

A Framework for Enhancing Privacy and Anonymity in Blockchain-Enabled IoT Devices

With the increase in IoT(Internet of Things)devices comes an inherent challenge of security.In the world today,privacy is the prime concern of every individual.Preserving one’s privacy and keeping anonymity throughout the system is a desired functionality that does not come without inevitable trade-offs like scalability and increased complexity and is always exceedingly difficult to manage.The challenge is keeping confidentiality and continuing to make the person innominate throughout the system.To address this,we present our proposed architecture where we manage IoT devices using blockchain technology.Our proposed architecture works on and off blockchain integrated with the closed-circuit television(CCTV)security camera fixed at the rental property.In this framework,the CCTV security camera feed is redirected towards the owner and renter based on the smart contract conditions.One entity(owner or renter)can see the CCTV security camera feed at one time.There is no third-party dependence except for the CCTV security camera deployment phase.Our contributions include the proposition of framework architecture,a novel smart contract algorithm,and the modification to the ring signatures leveraging an existing cryptographic technique.Analyses are made based on different systems’security and key management areas.In an empirical study,our proposed algorithm performed better in key generation,proof generation,and verification times.By comparing similar existing schemes,we have shown the proposed architectures’advantages.Until now,we have developed this system for a specific area in the real world.However,this system is scalable and applicable to other areas like healthcare monitoring systems,which is part of our future work.

Advanced electrocatalysts with unusual active sites for electrochemical water splitting

Electrochemical water splitting represents a promising technology for green hydrogen production.To design advanced electrocatalysts,it is crucial to identify their active sites and interpret the relationship between their structures and performance.Materials extensively studied as electrocatalysts include noble-metal-based(e.g.,Ru,Ir,and Pt)and non-noble-metal-based(e.g.,3d transition metals)compounds.Recently,advancements in characterization techniques and theoretical calculations have revealed novel and unusual active sites.The present review highlights the latest achievements in the discovery and identification of various unconventional active sites for electrochemical water splitting,with a focus on state-of-the-art strategies for determining true active sites and establishing structure–activity relationships.Furthermore,we discuss the remaining challenges and future perspectives for the development of next-generation electrocatalysts with unusual active sites.By presenting a fresh perspective on the unconventional reaction sites involved in electrochemical water splitting,this review aims to provide valuable guidance for the future study of electrocatalysts in industrial applications.
