We estimate the effect of exports to China on local employment in South Korea,exploiting variations in trade and employment across 220 South Korean municipalities between 2007 and *** identify the effect of exports on employment,we use a novel instrument:China's exports to the *** isolates the demand-side factors for South Korean exports to China from the supply-side factors that lead to biased estimations using ordinary least squares *** results of a two-stage least squares estimation using municipality-level data confirm that increased exports to China contribute to a rise in employment in South Korean local labor *** effect occurs mostly in the service and construction industries rather than in the manufacturing sector.

MnO2-impregnated carbon-coated Fe3 O4(Fe3O4/C/MnO2)nanocomposites with a good core-shell structure were prepared by direct oxidation of carbon-coated Fe3 O4(Fe3O4/C)microspheres with KMnO4 in alkaline solution and applied to adsorb bovine serum albumin(BSA).X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscope(TEM),Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR),vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM)and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA)tests show that Fe3O4/C microspheres were newly functionalized via the oxidation by ***3O4/C/MnO2 nanocomposites exhibit a higher adsorption capacity for BSA than Fe3O4/C microspheres and the maximum adsorption of BSA on them occurs at pH 4.7,which is the isoelectric point of *** isotherm model describes the adsorption of BSA better than Freundlich model and Temkin model,and the kinetics data fit well with the pseudo-second-order model.

PIF1 Regulates Plastid Development by Repressing Photosynthetic Genes in the Endodermis

Mutations in Phytochrome Interacting Factors （PIFs） induce a conversion of the endodermal amyloplasts necessary for gravity sensing to plastids with developed thylakoids accompanied by abnormal activation of photosynthetic genes in the dark. In this study, we investigated how PIFs regulate endodermal plastid development by performing comparative transcriptome analysis. We show that both endodermal expression of PIF1 and global expression of the PIF quartet induce transcriptional changes in genes enriched for nuclear-encoded photosynthetic genes such as LHCA and LHCB. Among the 94 shared differentially expressed genes identified from the comparative transcriptome analysis, only 14 genes are demonstrated to be direct targets of PIF1, and most photosynthetic genes are not. Using a co-expression analysis, we identified a direct target of PIF, whose expression pattern shows a strong negative correlation with many photo- synthetic genes. We have named this gene REPRESSOR OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC GENES1 （RPGE1）. Endodermal expression of RPGE1 rescued the elevated expression of photosynthetic genes found in the pff quadruple （pifQ） mutant and partly restored amyloplast development and hypocotyl negative gravitropism. Taken together, our results indicate that RPGE1 acts downstream of PIF1 in the endodermis to repress photosynthetic genes and regulate plastid development.

Aim： To evaluate the expression of leptin and leptin receptor in benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） and prostate cancer （PCa）, and to investigate whether they are associated with the development and progression of PCa. Methods： hnmunohistochemical staining was performed to examine the expression of leptin and leptin receptor in BPH and PCa. PCa was divided into three groups： localized PCa, locally advanced PCa and metastatic PCa. The positive staining was identified and the percentage of the positive staining was graded. We also assessed the relationship between both the Gleason score and body mass index （BMI） and PCa. Results： The percentage of the leptin expression in PCa was significantly higher than that in BPH （P 〈 0.01）. For the PCa group, the expressed levels of leptin showed a considerable correlation with localized PCa and metastatic PCa （P 〈 0.05）. Leptin receptor, however, did not reveal a definite difference between BPH and PCa. The expression of leptin indicated a significant difference between well-differentiated PCa （Gleason score ≤6） and poorly differentiated PCa （Gleason score 8-10）（P 〈 0.05）. The relation between the leptin expression level in PCa and the BMI was not remarkable （P = 0.447）. Conclusion： Our results suggest that leptin might have a promoting effect on the carcinogenesis and progression of PCa.

BACKGROUND： Many studies have suggested that one possible etiology of mild cognitive impairment is small vessel cerebrovascular disease, which is associated with small subcortical infarcts and white matter abnormalities. These white matter changes have been detected as white matter hyperintensity （WMH） using magnetic resonance imaging. WMH may be associated with frontal lobe dysfunction. OBJECTIVE： To examine white matter changes in mild cognitive impairment patients of different subtypes, and to evaluate the correlation between white matter changes and neuropsychological characteristics, demographic information, vascular risk factors, and mild cognitive impairment subtypes. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： The neurophysiological, comparison study was performed at the Department of Neurology Memory Clinic, Ulsan University Hospital, South Korea, between March 2007 and March 2008. PARTICIPANTS： Out of a total of 83 subjects with clinically diagnosed mild cognitive impairment at the out-patient clinic, 3 subjects with severe WMH were excluded. A total of 80 subjects were included in this study. No patients suffered from cognitive impairment induced by neurological diseases, mental disorders, or somatic diseases. In accordance with magnetic resonance imaging results, the patients were assigned to two subtypes： 56 subjects without WMH and 24 subjects with WMH. METHODS： All patients were subjected to a standard neuropsychological battery using the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination, Clinical Dementia Rating, and comprehensive Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery. The Clinical Dementia Rating reflected general cognitive function of patients. Results from the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery reflected attention, language function, visuospatial function, verbal memory, nonverbal memory, long-term memory, and frontal/executive function. Earthquake-induced disasters are often more severe over soft soils than over firm soils or rocks owing to the seismic site effects related to the amplification of ground motion. On a regional scale, such differences can be estimated by spatially predicting the subsurface soil thickness over the entire target area. Generally, soil deposits are deeper in coastal or riverside areas than in inland regions. In this study, the seismic site effects in the coastal metropolitan areas of Incheon and Bucheon, South Korea, were assessed to provide information on seismic hazards. Spatial prediction of geotechnical layers was performed for the entire study area within an advanced GIS framework. Approximately 7500 existing borehole records in the Incheon and Bucheon areas were gathered and archived into a GIS database. Surface geotechnical data were acquired from a walk-over survey. Based on the optimized geo-data, spatial zoning maps of site-specific seismic response parameters, based on multiscale geospatial modeling, were created and presented for use in a regional seismic mitigation strategy. Seismic zonation was also performed to determine site coefficients for seismic design over the entire target area and to compare them with each other. We verified that the geotechnical data based spatial zonation would be useful for seismic hazard mitigation.
