Objective To investigate the pretreatment effects of Rhodiola rosea （R. rosea） extract on cognitive dysfunction, oxidative stress in hippocampus and hippocampal neuron injury in a rat model of Alzheimer＇s disease （AD）. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated with R. rosea extract at doses of 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 g/kg for 3 weeks, followed by bilateral intracerebroventricular injection with streptozotocin （1.5 mg/kg） on days 1 and 3. Behavioral alterations were monitored after 2 weeks from the lesion using Morris water maze task. Three weeks after the lesion, the rats were sacrificed for measuring the malondialdehyde （MDA）, glutathione reductase （GR） and reduced glutathione （GSH） levels in hippocampus and histopathology of hippocampal neurons. Results The MDA level was significantly increased while the GR and GSH levels were significantly decreased with striking impairments in spatial learning and memory and severe damage to hippocampal neurons in the model rat induced by intracerebroventricular injection of streptozotocin. These abnormalities were significantly improved by pretreatment with R. rosea extract （3.0 g/kg）. Conclusion R. rosea extract can protect rats against cognitive deficits, neuronal injury and oxidative stress induced by intracerebroventricular injection of streptozotocin, and may be used as a potential agent in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.

In the spread of SARS-C oV-2,there have been multiple waves of replacement between strains,each of which having a distinct set of *** first wave is a group of four mutations(C241 T,C3037 T,C14408 T and A23403 G [this being the amino acid change D614 G];all designated 0 to 1 below).This DG(D614 G) group,fixed at the start of the pandemic,is the foundation of all subsequent waves of ***,the DG group is absent in early Asian samples but present(and likely common) in Europe from the *** data show that the high fitness of DG1111 requires the synergistic effect of all four ***,the European strains would have had no time to evolve the four DG mutations(0 to1),had they come directly from the early Asian DG0000 *** likely,the European DG1111 strain had acquired the highly adaptive DG mutations in pre-pandemic Europe and had been spreading in parallel with the Asian *** recent reports further support this twin-beginning *** was a period of two-way spread between Asia and Europe but,by May 2020,the European strains had supplanted the Asian strains *** large-scale replacement of one set of mutations for another has since been replayed many times as COVID-19 progresses.

Background:The rapid antibiotics treatment targeted to a specific pathogen can improve clinical outcomes of *** aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of biliary septicemia caused by cholangitis or cholecystitis according to causative ***:We performed a retrospective cohort study in 151 patients diagnosed with cholangitis or cholecystitis with bacterial septicemia from January 2013 to December *** patients showed clinical evidence of biliary tract infection and had blood isolates that demonstrated ***:Gram-negative,gram-positive,and both types of bacteria caused 84.1%(127/151),13.2%(20/151),and 2.6%(4/151)episodes of septicemia,*** most common infecting organisms were Escherichia coli among gram-negative bacteria and Enterococcus species(Enterococcus casseliflavus and Enterococcus faecalis)among gram-positive *** were no differences in mortality,re-admission rate,and need for emergency decompression procedures between the gram-positive and gram-negative septicemia *** univariate analysis,previous gastrectomy history was associated with gram-positive *** analysis also showed that previous gastrectomy history was strongly associated with gram-positive septicemia(Odds ratio=5.47,95%CI:1.19–25.23;P=0.029).Conclusions:Previous gastrectomy history was related to biliary septicemia induced by gram-positive *** information would aid the choice of empirical antibiotics.

Chronic subdural hematoma is a common neurosurgical condition especially in the aging population. Burr hole for drainage is an effective treatment, yet recurrence is reported at 8 to 22 % worldwide, and 1-year mortality rates could be as high as 32 %. Our previous study on the use of dexamethasone as a primary nonsurgical treatment showed good response in selected group of patients. This study aims to assess the efficacy of dexamethasone with surgical drainage in the reduction of recurrence requiring reoperation. From October 2000 to September 2006, patients with chronic subdural hematoma admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, were randomized to surgical drainage with steroid versus surgical drainage only. The primary endpoint was symptomatic recurrence requiring reoperation. Two hundred forty-eight patients were recruited and consented for the randomization during the study period. One hundred twenty-two received both surgery and steroid (the intervention arm) while 126 received surgery only (the control arm). The recurrence rate requiring reoperation was 6.6 % (8/122) and 13.5 % (17/126), respectively (p = 0.109). There was no significant difference in complications such as chest infection (p = 0.201) or wound infection (p = 0.987). Favorable outcome (Glasgow Outcome Score 4–5) was 104/122 (85.2 %) in the intervention group versus 105/126 (83.3 %) in the control group, respectively (p = 0.811). Based on the recurrence rate in our study, we generate a potential sample size of at least 594 patients (type I error = 5 %, power = 80 %, two-sided test) to detect a significant difference. In this prospective pilot phase IIB randomized controlled study, steroid with surgical drainage had a lower recurrence with reoperation though statistically insignificant. It was safe with no significant difference in complication rates. This pilot study generates a potential sample size for a definitive larger double-blinded randomized controlled

The immunoresponsive gene 1 （IRG 1） protein has crucial functions in embryonic implantation and neurodegeneration. IRG1 promotes endotoxin tolerance by increasing A20 expression in macrophages through reactive oxygen species （ROS）. The cytoprotective protein heme oxygenase-1 （HO-1）, which generates endogenous carbon monoxide （CO）, is expressed in the lung during Lipopolysaccharide （LPS） tolerance and cross tolerance. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms and functional links between IRG1 and HO-1 in the innate immune system remain unknown. In the present study, we found that the CO releasing molecule-2 （CORM-2） and chemical inducers of HO- 1 increased I RG 1 expression in a time- and dose-dependent fashion in RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, inhibition of HO-1 activity by zinc protoporphyrin IX （ZnPP） and HO-1 siRNA significantly reduced expression of IRG1 under these conditions. In addition, treatment with CO and HO-1 induction significantly increased A20 expression, which was reversed by ZnPP and HO-1 siRNA. LPS-stimulated TNF-a was significantly decreased, whereas IRG1 and A20 were increased by CORM-2 application and HO-1 induction, which in turn were abrogated by ZnPP. Interestingly, siRNA against IRG1 and A20 reversed the effects of CO and HO-1 on LPS-stimulated TNF-a production. Additionally, CO and HO-1 inducers significantly increased IRG1 and A20 expression and downregulated TNF-a production in a LPS-stimulated sepsis mice model. Furthermore, the effects of CO and HO-1 on TNF-α production were significantly reversed when ZnPP was administered. In conclusion, CO and HO-1 induction regulates IRG1 and A20 expression, leading to inhibition of inflammation in vitroand in an in vivomice model.

Face image analysis is one among several important cues in computer *** the last five decades,methods for face analysis have received immense attention due to large scale applications in various face analysis *** parsing strongly benefits various human face image analysis tasks inducing face pose *** this paper we propose a 3D head pose estimation framework developed through a prior end to end deep face parsing *** have developed an end to end face parts segmentation framework through deep convolutional neural networks(DCNNs).For training a deep face parts parsing model,we label face images for seven different classes,including eyes,brows,nose,hair,mouth,skin,and *** extract features from gray scale images by using *** train a classifier using the extracted *** use the probabilistic classification method to produce gray scale images in the form of probability maps for each dense semantic *** use a next stage of DCNNs and extract features from grayscale images created as probability maps during the segmentation *** assess the performance of our newly proposed model on four standard head pose datasets,including Pointing’04,Annotated Facial Landmarks in the Wild(AFLW),Boston University(BU),and ICT-3DHP,obtaining superior results as compared to previous results.

Opinion (sentiment) analysis on big data streams from the constantly generated text streams on social media networks to hundreds of millions of online consumer reviews provides many organizations in every field with opportunities to discover valuable intelligence from the massive user generated text streams. However, the traditional content analysis frameworks are inefficient to handle the unprecedentedly big volume of unstructured text streams and the complexity of text analysis tasks for the real time opinion analysis on the big data streams. In this paper, we propose a parallel real time sentiment analysis system: Social Media Data Stream Sentiment Analysis Service (SMDSSAS) that performs multiple phases of sentiment analysis of social media text streams effectively in real time with two fully analytic opinion mining models to combat the scale of text data streams and the complexity of sentiment analysis processing on unstructured text streams. We propose two aspect based opinion mining models: Deterministic and Probabilistic sentiment models for a real time sentiment analysis on the user given topic related data streams. Experiments on the social media Twitter stream traffic captured during the pre-election weeks of the 2016 Presidential election for real-time analysis of public opinions toward two presidential candidates showed that the proposed system was able to predict correctly Donald Trump as the winner of the 2016 Presidential election. The cross validation results showed that the proposed sentiment models with the real-time streaming components in our proposed framework delivered effectively the analysis of the opinions on two presidential candidates with average 81% accuracy for the Deterministic model and 80% for the Probabilistic model, which are 1% - 22% improvements from the results of the existing literature.
