We investigated the variation of permeability spectra and relaxation frequency in Co-based amorphous ribbon annealed by pulsed Nd:YAg laser at various annealing energy Ea. The complex permeability spectra varies sensitively with the annealing energy, where the spectra could be decomposed into two contributions from domain wall motion,μdw(f) and rotational magnetization μrot(f) by analyzing the measured spectra as a function of driving ac field amplitude. The magnitude of μdw(f) and μrot(f) in dc limit shows maximum at Ea = 176 mJ. The maximum relaxation frequency for rotational magnetization, determined by μ'(f) curve, is about 700 kHz at Ea=62 mJ but that for wall motion is about 26 kHz at 230 mJ. These variations reflect the increase of magnetic softness and microstructural change by the annealing.

The histopathological diagnosis of gastric mucosal biopsy and endoscopic mucosal resection/endoscopic submucosal dissection specimens is important,but the diagnostic criteria,terminology,and grading system are not the same in the East and West.A structurally invasive focus is necessary to diagnose carcinoma for most Western pathologists,but Japanese pathologists make a diagnosis of cancer based on severe dysplastic cytologic atypia irrespective of the presence of *** the Vienna classification was introduced to reduce diagnostic discrepancies,it has been difficult to adopt due to different concepts for gastric epithelial neoplastic *** pathologists experience much difficulty making a diagnosis because we are influenced by Japanese pathologists as well as Western *** is geographically close to Korea,and academic exchanges are ***,Korean doctors are familiar with Western style medical *** a result,the terminology,definitions,and diagnostic criteria for gastric intraepithelial neoplasia are very heterogeneous in *** solve this problem,the gastrointestinal Pathology Study group of the Korean Society of Pathologists has made an effort and has suggested guidelines for differential diagnosis:(1) a diagnosis of carcinoma is based on invasion;(2) the most important characteristic of low grade dysplasia is the architectural pattern such as regular distribution of crypts without severe branching,budding,or marked glandular crowding;(3) if nuclear pseudostratification occupies more than the basal half of the cryptal cells in three or more adjacent crypts,the lesion is considered high grade dysplasia;(4) if severe cytologic atypia is present,careful inspection for invasive foci is necessary,because the risk for invasion is very high;and(5) other structural or nuclear atypia should be evaluated to make a final decision such as cribriform pattern,papillae,ridges,vesicular nuclei,high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio,loss

AIM: To evaluate the eff icacy of a new nuclear imaging Infecton (Tc-99m ciprofloxacin) for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. METHODS: Sixteen patients thought to have acute cholecystitis were included in this study. The diagnosis of acute cholecystitis was made based on clinical symptoms and ultrasonographic and pathologic f indings. RESULTS: The 16 patients were composed of 12 acute and 4 chronic cholecystitis patients. Twelve patients with acute cholecystitis were image-positive, including one false-positive. Four patients with chronic cholecystitis were image-negative, of whom three were true-negative. This nuclear imaging had a sensitivity of 91.7%, a specificity of 75%, a positive-predictive value of 91.7%, and a negative-predictive value of 75%. CONCLUSION: Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging is easy to perform and applicable for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis.

Several studies have demonstrated that the Chinese herb gastrodia elata Blume can protect against amyloid beta-peptide （Ap）-induced cell death. To investigate the possible therapeutic effects of gastrodia elata Blume on Alzheimer＇s disease, we established a rat model of AIzheimer＇s disease by injecting A325-35 into bilateral hippocampi. These rats were intragastrically administered 500 or 1 000 mg/kg gastrodia elata Blume per day for 52 consecutive days. Morris water maze tests showed that gastrodia elata Blume treatment significantly improved the spatial memory of Alzheimer＇s disease rats. Congo red staining revealed that gastrodia elata Blume significantly reduced the number of amyloid deposits in the hippocampus of these rats. Western blot analysis showed that choline acetyltransferase expression in the medial septum and hippocampus was significantly increased by the treatment of gastrodia elata Blume, while EIIman method showed significant decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in all three regions （prefrontal cortex, medial septum and hippocampus）. These findings suggest that long-term administration of gastrodia elata Blume has therapeutic potential for Alzheimer＇s disease.

AIM: To analyze the risk factors of pancreatic leakage after ***: We retrospectively reviewed 172 consecutive patients who had undergone pancreatico-duodenectomy at Inha University Hospital between April 1996 and March 2006. We analyzed the pancreatic fistula rate according to the clinical characteristics, the pathologic and laboratory findings, and the anastomotic ***: The incidence of developing pancreatic fistulas in patients older than 60 years of age was 21.7% (25/115), while the incidence was 8.8% (5/57) for younger patients; the difference was significant (P = 0.03). Patients with a dilated pancreatic duct had a lower rate of post-operative pancreatic fistulas than patients with a non-dilated duct (P = 0.001). Other factors, including clinical features, anastomotic methods, and pathologic diagnosis, did not show any statistical difference. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that pancreatic fistulas are related to age and a dilated pancreatic duct. The surgeon must take these risk factors into consideration when performing a pancre-aticoduodenectomy.

Protection of Allergic Asthma in Mice by Black Rice Bran Bioprocessed with Shiitake Mushroom Mycelia

We evaluated the potential of orally fed new food formulations to inhibit biomarkers reported to be involved in the causes of allergic asthma in mice. Asthma, a serious non-communicable disease, affects both adults and children and can be undertreated. New functional foods could provide therapeutic approaches. Here, the anti-asthma mechanism of a new functional food and three isolated fractions produced by bioprocessing black rice bran with shiitake mushroom mycelia was evaluated in mast cells, B cells, and orally fed mice and compared with non-bioprocessed black rice bran. In vitro, the treatments inhibited RBL-2H3 cell degranulation and immunoglobulin E (IgE) production. The in vitro anti-asthma effects were confirmed in orally fed mice following asthma induction by alumina and chicken egg ovalbumin (OVA). The suppression of asthma resulted from the inhibition of inflammation- and immune-related substances, including OVA-specific IgE, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, eotaxin, leukotriene C4, prostaglandin D2, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum. The treatment also reversed the thickening of the lung airway wall. The inflammation and asthma inhibition seems to be regulated by the balance of the T-helper cells’ Th1/Th2 immune response and the inhibition of multiple biomarkers associated with the cause of asthma. Future human clinical studies with adults and children should determine the potential therapeutic value of the anti-asthma effects of the new functional foods.

Background: Idiopathic interstitial pneumonia is characterized by fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteases (TIMPs) have been shown to regulate remodeling of the ECM, which indicates that they are important factors in the process of lung fibrosis. Therefore, we evaluated the expression of MMPs and TIMPs in tissues obtained from patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia and control tissues. Methods: Thirty-seven patients who were diagnosed with IIP (22: IPF, 13: NSIP, 2: COP) and 5 controls were enrolled in this study. The MMP-2 and -9 activity in lung tissue obtained from these patients was analyzed using gelatin zymography and the levels of TIMP-1 and -2 were measured by western blotting. We also evaluated the expression of MMP-2 and -9, as well as that of TIMP-1 and -2 in lung tissue using immunohistochemistry. Results: The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were significantly increased in patients with IPF compared to those with NSIP and COP. The activities of TIMP-1 and -2 were also higher in patients with IPF than NSIP/COP patients and control subjects. There were no significant differences observed in the activities of MMPs and TIMPs obtained from patients with NSIP/COP and control subjects. The immunohistochemical analysis showed that TIMP-2 and MMP-2 were strongly stained at the fibroblasts of the fibroblastic foci in patients with IPF. Conclusions: These results suggest that over-expression of gelatinases and TIMPs in patients with IPF are important factors in the irreversible fibrosis that is associated with lung parenchyma.
