Molecular Mechanism of the Specificity of Protein Import into Chloroplasts and Mitochondria in Plant Cells

Plants possess both types of endosymbiotic organelles, chloroplasts and mitochondria. Transit peptides and presequences function as signal sequences for specific import into chloroplasts and mitochondria, respectively. However, how these highly similar signal sequences confer the protein import specificity remains elusive. Here, we show that mitochondrial- or chloroplast-specific import involves two distinct steps, specificity determination and translocation across envelopes, which are mediated by the N-terminal regions and functionally interchangeable C-terminal regions, respectively, of transit peptides and presequences. A domain harboring multiple-arginine and hydrophobic sequence motifs in the N-terminal regions of presequences was identified as the mitochondrial specificity factor. The presence of this domain and the absence of arginine residues in the N-terminal regions of otherwise common targeting signals confers specificity of protein import into mitochondria and chloroplasts, respectively. AtToc159, a chloroplast import receptor, also contributes to determining chloroplast import specificity. We propose that common ancestral sequences were functionalized into mitochondrial- and chloroplast-specific signal sequences by the presence and absence, respectively, of multiple-arginine and hydrophobic sequence motifs in the N-terminal region.

A Retrospective Study of Directed Blood Donations in the Kasungu District of Malawi

Since the discovery of blood circulation and transfusion, there has been an insatiable demand for voluntary blood donations throughout the world. However, gathering blood donors has never been easy because eligible donors constitute only a fraction of the general population and are often reluctant to donate. This is especially challenging in underprivileged countries of sub-Saharan Africa such as Malawi whose nationally run blood transfusion service struggles to maintain hospital blood banks. As a result, hospitals turn to their local communities for directed donations. A retrospective analysis from January 2014 to June 2016 of directed blood donor data from two hospitals in the Kasungu District of Malawi was conducted. The analysis of 2134 donations was carried out with respect to sex, age, hemoglobin concentration, blood group, and presence of transfusion-transmissible infections. On average, donors were 30 years of age and predominately male. Blood group O+ constituted more than half of all directed blood donations. Ultimately, about one third of donations were unable to be utilized for transfusion.

The rapid advancement of AI-enabled applications has resulted in an increasing need for energy-efficient computing hardware.Logic-in-memory is a promising approach for processing the data stored in memory,wherein fast and efficient computations are possible owing to the parallel execution of reconfigurable logic operations.In this study,a dual-logic-in-memory device,which can simultaneously perform two logic operations in four states,is demonstrated using van der Waals ferroelectric field-effect transistors(vdW FeFETs).The proposed dual-logic-in-memory device,which also acts as a twobit storage device,is a single bidirectional polarization-integrated ferroelectric field-effect transistor(BPI-FeFET).It is fabricated by integrating an in-plane vdW ferroelectric semiconductor SnS and an out-of-plane vdW ferroelectric gate dielectric material—CuInP_(2)S_(6).Four reliable resistance states with excellent endurance and retention characteristics were achieved.The two-bit storage mechanism in a BPI-FeFET was analyzed from two perspectives:carrier density and carrier injection controls,which originated from the out-of-plane polarization of the gate dielectric and in-plane polarization of the semiconductor,respectively.Unlike conventional multilevel FeFETs,the proposed BPIFeFET does not require additional pre-examination or erasing steps to switch from/to an intermediate polarization,enabling direct switching between the four memory states.To utilize the fabricated BPI-FeFET as a dual-logic-inmemory device,two logical operations were selected(XOR and AND),and their parallel execution was demonstrated.Different types of logic operations could be implemented by selecting different initial states,demonstrating various types of functions required for numerous neural network operations.The flexibility and efficiency of the proposed dual-logic-in-memory device appear promising in the realization of next-generation low-power computing systems.

Wearable and stretchable strain sensors have potential values in the fields of human motion and health monitoring,flexible electronics,and soft robotic skin.The wearable and stretchable strain sensors can be directly attached to human skin,providing visualized detection for human motions and personal healthcare.Conductive polymer composites(CPC)composed of conductive fillers and flexible polymers have the advantages of high stretchability,good flexibility,superior durability,which can be used to prepare flexible strain sensors with large working strain and outstanding sensitivity.This review has put forward a comprehensive summary on the fabrication methods,advanced mechanisms and strain sensing abilities of CPC strain sensors reported in recent years,especially the sensors with superior performance.Finally,the structural design,bionic function,integration technology and further application of CPC strain sensors are prospected.

CONSPECTUS:The development of a highly effective,low-cost method for protection against direct transmission through infectious media associated with respiratory diseases has been considered to be a major challenge in the management of the pandemic outbreak.Currently,filtration in respirators and masks depends on the mesh size,raising safety concerns about direct contact with the virus-laden layers of masks and respirators during use and disposal.Also,conventional medical face masks and respirators are recommended for single use only because long-term use and reuse of masks increase the risk of contact transmission of pathogens.As a result,mask reusability has gained much attention in addressing the global problem of respirator and mask shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.Furthermore,coinfection by influenza,SARSCoV-2,and bacteria has been an ongoing issue in the current COVID-19 pandemic.In our response to the increasing demand for more convenient forms of disease control,our group has investigated antimicrobial technologies for respiratory devices against pandemic/epidemic diseases and developed two universal antimicrobial coating technologies:(1)nonwashable,reusable salt-coated fabrics and(2)washable,photopolymerizable polymer-coated fabrics which efficiently inactivate infectious viruses by contact with the filter.This is an opportune time to assess research efforts toward antimicrobial face mask technology for its expected impact on society and the economy.

Can an Invasive Prey Species Induce Morphological and Behavioral Changes in an Endemic Predator? Evidence from a South Korean Snake(Oocatochus rufodorsatus)

Introduction of an invasive prey species into an ecosystem may affect an endemic predator＇s fitness by altering the prey-predator system. Successful adaptation may allow the endemic predator to eat and control the invasive species, while unsuccessful adaptation may result in extinction of the predator. We examine the possible effects of the invasive North American bullfrog （Rana [Lithobates] catesbeiana） on the endemic Red-backed rat snake （Oocatochus rufodorsatus） in South Korea. We do so by comparing the morphology and behavior of adult and hatchling snakes from bullfrog-exposed （Taean） and bullfrog-unexposed （Hongcheon） populations. Among the seven morphological characteristics investigated, relative tail length （tail length/snout-vent length） of both adults and hatchlings from Taean was significantly greater than that of adults and hatchlings from Hongcheon. Also, adult snakes from Taean had a signiifcantly shorter latency of ifrst tongue lfick in response to prey compared to adults from Hongcheon. This difference was not observed in hatchlings. In other snake species, a longer relative tail length and shorter latency of ifrst tongue lfick are known to improve foraging efifciency, and these characters may be adaptations ofO. rufodorsatus to prey on bullfrogs. This study provides preliminary evidence that the presence of an invasive prey species may cause morphological and behavioral changes in an endemic predator.
