Numerical Analysis of Stresses on Layer-by-Layer Basis in FML Composite Cylinder Subjected to External Hydrostatic Loading

The aim of the research work was to numerically investigate the residual stresses induced between the layers of fiber metal laminate (FML) cylinder (glass/epoxy reinforced aluminum laminates) under buckling hydrostatic loading. For the analysis of buckling behavior of FML cylinders, various fiber orientations such as 0/90°, 60/30°, ±45° and ±55° and different FRP thickness of 1, 2, and 3 mm were considered. The aluminum cylinder of inner diameter 80 mm, length 800 mm and wall thickness 1 mm was modeled with SHELL281 element type and a total of 1033 elements were used for computing the induced residual stresses between the layers. The results show that magnitude of residual stresses between the layers decreased along the thickness from outer layer towards the inner layer in sine wave form. The maximum residual Von-Mises stress was at inner aluminum layer while the maximum residual radial stress was at the outermost layer of FML cylinder due to the inward pressure. Among all types of FML cylinder 0/90° fiber oriented FML cylinder exhibited the least radial stress and a maximum Von-Mises stress along the FRP thickness.

Phytochemical screening, antibacterial and anthelmintic activities of leaf and seed extracts of Coix lacryma-jobi L.

Objective: To evaluate the possible phytochemical constituents, antibacterial and anthelmintic activity of Coix lacryma-jobi L. (Job's tears) using the chloroform leaves and seed extracts. Methods: The test for antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration was conducted by the disc diffusion and two-fold dilution method, respectively. In anthelmintic activity test, using Pheretima posthuma model, vermifuge and vermicidal activity were determined by using the chloroform extract at various concentrations. Results: The preliminary phytochemical screening of chloroform extracts of Job's tears leaves indicated the presence of alkaloid, carbohydrate, saponin, glycosides, flavonoids, phenols, tannins and steroids whereas the seeds extract contained glycosides, flavonoids, phenols and steroids, which revealed highest antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (12.5–50 mg/mL) was observed against all selected bacteria. On the other hand, it has been observed that chloroform leaves extracts showed shortest time of paralysis (P = 8.17 min) and death (D = 18.23 min) at 100 mg/mL concentration, in comparison with seed extracts (P = 36.83 min and D = 62.33 min) at 100 mg/mL concentration and albendazole (10 mg/mL) used as reference drug (P = 20.17 min and D = 43.67 min), which indicated the plant possessed mild anthelmintic activity. Conclusions: The chloroform extracts (leaves and seeds) showed efficacy for both bacterial infections and parasitic diseases, which ensure the traditional uses of Coix lacryma-jobi L.

Objective: To study the regeneration of prostate lobe after surgical lobectomy in rats. Methods: In rats the regeneration of extirpation of one ventral prostate lobe and its effect on the size of the contralateral lobe were studied at various time intervals after lobectomy and their morphology compared with those of the normal developing prostate from the neonatus to the adult. The influence of sex steroid hormones on the regeneration process was also studied. Results: The extirpated ventral lobe regenerated, attaining plateau size at 8 weeks-16 weeks post-lobectomy, however, it remained significantly smaller than the original size. At the 2nd week post-lobectomy, the contralateral lobe was significantly hypertrophied, but reverted to the previous size with time. Or chiectomy carried out at the time of lobectomy caused a drastic reduction in the size of the remaining lobe, which was prevented by androgen treatment. 目前,在印度由核盘菌引起的芥菜腐烂变的很严重,其他地方也有很高的疾病突发率,产量下降直接导致种植者的积极性下降。据报道,病原菌感染大约400多种植物,且至今没有发现并证实在任何宿主中有抵抗这类疾病数据报告。本试验在农场的中心[77°27′E,27°12′N,海拔160m,具有很厚很肥沃的淤积层土壤,pH8.0]进行,一块5m×4.8m的土地被随机划分成30cm×10cm大小的小区,并设计4个重复,3个日期播种(07,28Oct,18Nov2006)用测试Rohini多样性来了解疾病发生时不同非生物因素的影响。每周通过重量分析方法对每块地进行湿度分析并记录数据。在花期每天08:00-10:00收集花瓣,并且把他们放在含有氯霉素的马铃薯葡萄糖琼脂培养基上培养,以记录印度芥菜花瓣上菌核病的孢子数量.气候因素有:最高和最低温度,上午和下午的相对湿度,以及在离试验地点200m远的气象台观察到的日照长度。数据分析显示:花瓣病原菌孢子的感染数量与光照时间成正相关(R2=0.97)。菌核病导致的腐烂范围与土壤的相对湿度成正相关(R2=0.84),特别是在开花季节和播种后的500天。在苗期500天的临界期,凉爽而干净的天气与高湿度的土壤似乎使试验地的印度芥菜上菌核病发生率更高。

Longevity of animals under reactive oxygen species stress and disease susceptibility due to global warming

The world is projected to experience an approximate doubling of atmospheric CO_2 concentration in the next decades. Rise in atmospheric CO_2 level as one of the most important reasons is expected to contribute to raise the mean global temperature 1.4 ℃-5.8 ℃ by that time. A survey from 128 countries speculates that global warming is primarily due to increase in atmospheric CO_2 level that is produced mainly by anthropogenic activities. Exposure of animals to high environmental temperatures is mostly accompanied by unwanted acceleration of certain biochemical pathways in their cells. One of such examples is augmentation in generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and subsequent increase in oxidation of lipids, proteins and nucleic acids by ROS. Increase in oxidation of biomolecules leads to a state called as oxidative stress(OS). Finally, the increase in OS condition induces abnormality in physiology of animals under elevated temperature. Exposure of animals to rise in habitat temperature is found to boost the metabolism of animals and a very strong and positive correlation exists between metabolism and levels of ROS and OS. Continuous induction of OS is negatively correlated with survivability and longevity and positively correlated with ageing in animals. Thus, it can be predicted that continuous exposure of animals to acute or gradual rise in habitat temperature due to global warming may induce OS, reduced survivability and longevity in animals in general and poikilotherms in particular. A positive correlation between metabolism and temperature in general and altered O_2 consumption at elevated temperature in particular could also increase the risk of experiencing OS in homeotherms. Effects of global warming on longevity of animals through increased risk of protein misfolding and disease susceptibility due to OS as the cause or effects or both also cannot be ignored.
