Genome of tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus (Cimicidae, Hemiptera) reveals tetraspanin expanded in bed bug ancestor

Cimex species are ectoparasites that exclusively feed on warm-blooded animals such as birds and mammals. Three cimicid species are known to be persistent pests for humans, including the tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus, common bed bug Cimex lectularius, and Eastern bat bug Leptocimex boueti. To date, genomic information is restricted to the common bed bug C. lectularius, which limits understanding their biology and to provide controls of bed bug infestations. Here, a chromosomal-level genome assembly of C. hemipterus (495 Mb [megabase pairs]) contained on 16 pseudochromosomes (scaffold N50 = 34 Mb), together with 9 messenger RNA and small RNA transcriptomes were obtained. In comparison between hemipteran genomes, we found that the tetraspanin superfamily was expanded in the Cimex ancestor. This study provides the first genome assembly for the tropical bed bug C. hemipterus, and offers an unprecedented opportunity to address questions relating to bed bug infestations, as well as genomic evolution to hemipterans more widely.

Reassessing the contributions of terrestrial waters to sea level variations in the South China Sea and its response to alternating ENSO events

Regional sea level variability is linked to regional terrestrial water and the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO).This study assessed the relationships between the sea level variations in the South China Sea(SCS)and ENSO,the impact of terrestrial water storage(TWS)on non-steric sea level(NSSL),and the contributions of steric sea level(SSL)and NSSL to sea level anomaly(SLA),*** 2003 to 2015,the SLAs exhibited a long-term trend of 6.65±0.78 mm/yr,which was primarily attributed to the ***,during 2003-2015,ENSO events alternating with varying intensities might also be responsible for the unusually high SLA *** to the SSLs,the NSSLs contributed the seasonal signals to the SLAs,while the NSSLs changes were largely explained by the TWS in the Mekong River Basin at the seasonal scale and in the Pearl River Basin and Red River Basin at other time *** contrast to the TWS,the contributions of precipitation and evapotranspiration were relatively minor.A negative correlation between the sea level variations and ENSO was also found,with cross-correlation coefficients between the oceanic Ni?o index and SLAs/SSLs/NSSLs of -0.36/-0.37/-0.62 with lags of 2/3/2 months,*** findings systematically reassessed the contributions of different components to the sea level *** study provided a benchmark for in-depth analysis of the impacts of terrestrial water and other potential causes on sea level rise in the SCS.

Simulation-aided development of a compact local ventilation unit with the use of CFD analysis

Insufficient fresh air supply due to the increased air tightness of building envelopes after building renovations and window upgrades is a major concern of HVAC engineering *** paper demonstrates the application of CFD simulations in the development of a compact decentralised ventilation unit with integrated heat recovery system for local ventilation of rooms,targeting this common *** device houses an innovative cyclically rotating recuperative heat exchanger,allowing effective condensate removal and de-icing in winter for its independent operation throughout the *** paper introduces the ventilation unit,describes preparation of its numerical models,and conducts CFD simulation using Ansys Fluent *** initial design of the device was improved following the findings of the numerical analysis,and the proposed adjustments were tested through follow-up CFD simulations,confirming that the desired outcomes were achieved.A separate CFD analysis was performed to assess the use of different air supply elements at the air outlet to the room,recommending the use of adjustable nozzles.A prototype ventilation unit was manufactured and the volume flow rate under different operating conditions was measured to be compared with the simulation *** outcome of the research is a new type of compact local ventilation *** increase in device energy efficiency was achieved,with the aid of simulations,while maintaining its compact *** addition to presenting the potential of using variant CFD analysis in the development of new HVAC equipment,the paper also indicates the drawbacks of using the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF)method to approximate the rotation of radial fan impellers in CFD simulations.

Does Cold Plasma Affect Breaking Dormancy and Seed Germination? A Study on Seeds of Lamb's Quarters(Chenopodium album agg.)

Low-pressure discharge is applied for stimulation of germination of two seed lots of Lamb＇s Quarters （Chenopodium album agg.） with different starting germinations （17%, 8%） and in different stages of dormancy. Different exposition durations with cold plasma treatment were applied. The variable of the ratio cumulative germination was calculated. The Richards＇ equation was used for curve-fitting and simulation of the growth curves. Population parameters, namely Vi - viability, Me - time, Qu - dispersion, and Sk - skewness, counted from the curves described the germination rate well. Significant differences among Qu confirmed the erratic dormancy and gradual germination of Lamb＇s Quarters. No difference in the Me parameter was found between two tested seed lots, and no interspecies characteristics were changed using low-pressure discharge. The results suggested that plasma treatment changed seed germination in Lamb＇s Quarters seeds.

In trying to explain why Hong Kong of China ranks highest in life expectancy in the world,we review what various experts are hypothesizing,and how data science methods may be used to provide more evidence-based *** more data become available,we find some data analysis studies were too simplistic,while others too overwhelming in answering this challenging *** find the approach that analyzes life expectancy related data(mortality causes and rate for different cohorts)inspiring,and use this approach to study a carefully selected set of targets for *** discussing the factors that matter,we argue that it is more reasonable to try to identify a set of factors that together explain the phenomenon.

Topological feature engineering for machine learning based halide perovskite materials design

Accelerated materials development with machine learning(ML)assisted screening and high throughput experimentation for new photovoltaic materials holds the key to addressing our grand energy ***-driven ML is envisaged as a decisive enabler for new perovskite materials ***,its full potential can be severely curtailed by poorly represented molecular descriptors(or fingerprints).Optimal descriptors are essential for establishing effective mathematical representations of quantitative structure-property *** we reveal that our persistent functions(PFs)based learning models offer significant accuracy advantages over traditional descriptor based models in organic-inorganic halide perovskite(OIHP)materials design and have similar performance as deep learning *** multiscale simplicial complex approach not only provides a more precise representation for OIHP structures and underlying interactions,but also has better transferability to ML *** results demonstrate that advanced geometrical and topological invariants are highly efficient feature engineering approaches that can markedly improve the performance of learning models for molecular data ***,new structure-property relationships can be established between our invariants and *** anticipate that our molecular representations and featurization models will transcend the limitations of conventional approaches and lead to breakthroughs in perovskite materials design and discovery.
