Surface charging activated mechanism change: A computational study of O, CO, and CO2 interactions on Ag electrodes

Electrocatalytic and plasma-activated processes receive increasing attention in catalysis. Density functional theory(DFT) calculations are state-of-the-art tools for the fundamental study of reaction mechanisms and predicting the performance of catalytic materials. Proper application of DFT-based methods is crucial when investigating charge-doped electrode surfaces during electrocatalytic and plasma-activated reactions. Here, as a model electrode for plasma-activated CO2 splitting, we studied the interactions of O, CO, and CO2 with the neutral and progressively charged Ag(111) metal surfaces. We show that the application of correction procedures is necessary to obtain accurate adsorption energy profiles of O atoms,CO and CO2 molecules on Ag surfaces that are under the influence of additional electrons. Interestingly,the oxidation of CO is found to shift from a Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism on a neutral electrode to an Eley–Rideal mechanism on charged electrodes. Furthermore, we show that the surface charging of Ag(111) electrodes increase their CO2 reduction performance by enhancing the adsorption of O atoms and desorption of CO molecules. A further increase in the absolute charge-state of the electrode surface is expected to waive the thermodynamic barriers for the CO2 splitting reaction.

Gallbladder function and dynamics of bile flow in asymptomatic gallstone disease

AIM:To investigate the effects of gallbladder stones on motor functions of the gallbladder and the dynamics of bile flow in asymptomatic gallstone ***:Quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy was performed to detect the parameters of gallbladder motor function [gallbladder ejection fraction(GBEF),gallbladder visualization time(GBVT),gallbladder time to peak activity(GBTmax),gallbladder half emptying time(GBT1/2),and transit time of bile to duodenum(TTBD)] in 24 patients with asymptomatic cholelithiasis who were diagnosed incidentally during routine abdominal ultrasonographic examination and 20 healthy subjects with normal ***:Even though there was no significant difference in the clinical and laboratory parameters between the patient and control groups,all parameters of gallbladder function except TTBD were found to differ significantly between the two *** in the patient group was decreased(P=0.000) and GBVT,GBTmax,GBT1/2 in the patient group were longer(P=0.000,P=0.015,P=0.001,respectively).CONCLUSION:Our results showed that even if there were not any clinical and laboratory findings,gallbladder filling and emptying could be impaired in patients with gallstone disease.

Role of the Seasonal Cycle in Atrial Fibrillation Seen after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Background: We aimed to investigate the effect of seasons on atrial fibrillation that occurred after coronary bypass surgery operation. Method: 187 patients underwent coronary artery bypass operation in our clinic between July 2018 - July 2019. Isolated coronary artery bypass graft operation was performed with cardiopulmonary bypass to179 of these patients. Forty three patients that developed atrial fibrillation after coronary bypass operation, demographic, laboratory findings and date of atrial fibrillation data investigated retrospectively. Results: Forty three patients developed atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery. Forty one patients operated in winter, 48 in spring, 47 in summer, 43 in autumn and 13 patients developed atrial fibrillation in winter, 11 (25.6%) in spring, 8 (20.9%) in summer and 11 (23.3%) in autumn respectively. There is no statistical significance found by Z test that performed for all seasons for atrial fibrillation. Conclusion: There are many reasons that could play role on developing atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery. There are many publications that report vitamin D deficiency as a reason for developing atrial fibrillation after coronary bypass surgery. In our study, we did not evaluate a relationship between the development of post operative atrial fibrillation and seasons.
