Modeling the Transmission Dynamics of the Monkeypox Virus Infection with Treatment and Vaccination Interventions

Presently, an ongoing outbreak of the monkeypox virus infection that began in Bayelsa State of Nigeria has now spread to other parts of the country including mostly States in the South-South with the Nigerian Ministry of Health confirming 4 samples out of the 43 sent for testing at WHO Regional Laboratory in Dakar, Senegal. This reminds us that apart from the eradicated smallpox, there are other poxviruses that pose potential threat to people in West and Central Africa. In this paper, we developed a mathematical model for the dynamics of the transmission of monkeypox virus infection with control strategies of combined vaccine and treatment interventions. Using standard approaches, we established two equilibria for the model namely: disease-free and endemic. The disease-free equilibrium was proved to be both locally and globally asymptotically stable if R0 < 1 using the next-generation matrix and the comparison theorem. While the endemic equilibrium point existed only when R0 > 1, was proved to be locally asymptotically stable if R0 > 1 using the linearization plus row-reduction method. The basic reproduction numbers for the humans and the non-human primates of the model are computed using parameter values to be R0,h = 9.1304 x 10-6 and R0,n = 3.375 x 10-3 respectively. Numerical simulations carried out on the model revealed that the infectious individuals in the human and non-human primates’ populations will die out in the course of the proposed interventions in this paper during the time of the study. Sensitivity analysis carried out on the model parameters shows that the basic reproduction numbers of the model which served as a threshold for measuring new infections in the host populations decrease with increase in the control parameters of vaccination and treatment.

In this paper, we studied the transmission dynamics of ZIKV in the presence of a vector under the combined effects of treatment and vaccination in a hypothetical population. The disease-free εo and endemic ε1 equilibria were established with local stability on εo. We established the basic reproduction number Ro which served as a threshold for measuring the spread of the infection in the population using the next-generation matrix and computed its numerical value to be Ro = 0.0185903201 using the parameter values. It was established that the disease-free equilibrium εo is locally asymptotically stable since Ro < 1;meaning ZIKV infection would be eradicated from the population. The computational results of the study revealed that combining the two interventions of vaccination and treatment concomitantly proffers an optimal control strategy in taming the transmission of the virus than a single intervention strategy.

This paper studies the new families of exact traveling wave solutions with the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation,which models the propagation of rogue waves in ocean *** extended Fan sub-equation method with five parameters is used to find exact traveling wave *** has been observed that the equation exhibits a collection of traveling wave solutions for limiting values of *** method is beneficial for solving nonlinear partial differential equations,because it is not only useful for finding the new exact traveling wave solutions,but also gives us the solutions obtained previously by the usage of other techniques(Riccati equation,or first-kind elliptic equation,or the generalized Riccati equation as mapping equation,or auxiliary ordinary differential equation method)in a combined ***,by means of the concept of linear stability,we prove that the governing model is stable.3 D figures are plotted for showing the physical behavior of the obtained solutions for the different values of unknown parameters with constraint conditions.

Environmental issues linked to climate change and global warming have been at the centre stage of discussion all over the world, considering their magnitude and the broader scope of consequences. These catastrophic effects of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2, CO, water vapour, nitrous oxides, ozone, coupled with other artificially induced chemicals like CFCs have shifted weather patterns across the globe, thereby threatening the environment unpleasantly. However, the effects of climate changes are more pronounced in Nigeria, due to an unprecedented utilization of fossil-based fuels as the main energy source for electricity, transportation, industrial, agricultural, and domestic purposes. As a result, air pollution and land spills by oil led to the destruction of agricultural land and increasing heatwaves were left behind. Consequently, these impacted negatively on the ecosystem by intimidating the environment, counteracting biodiversity, decelerating economy and provoking human comfort, while simultaneously antagonizing socio-economic growth and sustainable developments. Thus, an urgent need for the Nigerian government to redirect from fossil fuels to renewables and intensify the campaign for afforestation to support green conservation of biodiversity. Information on Culex mosquitoes (vectors of filarial worm and viral encephalitis) from northern Nigeria is scanty, hindering evidence-based control. Here, two Culex populations (Kano and Kaduna) were characterized. Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex pipiens were found breeding in sympatry, with some hybrid individuals identified. Larval bioassays revealed high temephos resistance (LC50s = 1.34 mg/mL and 3.01 mg/mL for Kano and Kaduna, respectively). Larvae were more sensitive to α-cypermethrin (LC50s = 0.026 mg/mL and 0.067 mg/mL for Kano and Kaduna). WHO adult tube bioassays revealed high pyrethroid and DDT resistance, with mortalities of 44.01% ± 6.79%, 35.83% ± 12.58%, 29.69% ± 9.97% and 52.47% ± 4.34% for permethrin, deltamethrin, α-cypermethrin and DDT, respectively. Highest resistance was observed with bendiocarb (mortality = 13.58% ± 3.98%). High resistance was obtained with fenitrothion and malathion (mortalities = 21% ± 4.76% and 56.47% ± 8.67%, respectively), while a full susceptibility was observed with pirimiphos-methyl. Pre-exposure to piperonylbutoxide (PBO) significantly recovered α-cypermethrin susceptibility (mortality = 82% ± 5.16%, χ2 = 50.99, p < 0.0001), compared with the conventional bioassay (mortality = 32 ± 7.30). Mortalities of <20% were obtained in cone bioassays with Yorkool, DuraNet and PermaNet3.0 (side panels) nets, suggesting a loss of efficacy of conventional long-lasting insecticidal nets. However, mortalities of 99% and 86% were obtained in Kano and Kaduna populations using the roof of PermaNet3.0 (containing PBO and deltamethrin). Despite the high frequency of the 1014F VGSC knockdown resistance mutation allele (0.90), no correlation was observed between the 1014F kdr genotype and resistance phenotype. Sequencing of fragments of the acetylcholinesterase-1 gene detected no G119S mutation, in malathion-alive and malathion-dead females. A Comparison of Quality of Life, Medication Side-Effect and Adherence among Schizophrenia Patients on Conventional versus Atypical Antipsychotics

Quality of life (QoL) is becoming a widely accepted schizophrenia management outcome. But it is still not very clear if there are any significant differences between the conventional and atypical antipsychotics in terms of QoL improvement among people with schizophrenia (PWS). It is also imperative that antipsychotic drug-related factors, such as medication adherence and side-effect, which could directly or indirectly affect the QoL of PWS, are determined and compared among PWS on different classes of the drugs. Data were collected on Socio-demographic Characteristics, Quality of Life and Medication adherence using Socio-demographic and Schizophrenia Clinical Characteristics questionnaire, World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQoL)-Brief, and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) respectively from 250 respondents attending a tertiary health center’s Psychiatric clinic in Kano, Nigeria. Although PWS on the two classes of antipsychotic drugs showed inequalities in different aspects and domains of QoL, as well as in the levels of adherence and side-effects, the differences were all insignificant. However, presence of drug side effects was significantly associated with lower health-related QoL in the conventional antipsychotics group (p = 0.001), and lower score in the physical domain of QoL in the atypical antipsychotics group (p = 0.044). Medication adherence was found to be associated with better scores in different domains of QoL in both groups of PWS. There are no significant differences in terms of QoL, medication side-effect and adherence among PWS on the two classes of antipsychotics. However, drug side-effects and adherence were significantly and respectively associated with lower and higher scores in different domains of QoL in both groups.

A Prospective Study on the Incidence and Predictors of Postpartum Depression among Pregnant Women Attending an Antenatal Clinic in Kano, Northern Nigeria

Depressive disorder is a major contributor to years lived with disability (YLD) globally. It is estimated that 13% of all women experience the disorder in the first year postpartum. Postpartum depression (PPD) has significant implications to the physical and mental wellbeing of both the mother and her baby. Only non-depressed pregnant women (score of ≤ 6 on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) were recruited into this study. Data collection was done at 2 different stages;at recruitment stage (during the third trimester of pregnancy) and at the follow up stage (4th - 6th week postpartum). During the recruitment stage, intimate partner violence (IPV) and level of social support perception, among the women, were assessed using Hurt Insult Threaten Scream (HITS) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaires respectively. While at the follow up stage, the Obstetric questionnaire and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-7) were used respectively to obtain obstetric-related data and to diagnose for occurrence of depression. The incidence of PPD was found to be 16.34%. Several factors such as level of education, husband’s socioeconomic status, stressful life events, low perception of social support, obstetric instrumentation and not having a baby of preferred gender were significantly associated with PPD. Positive predictors of PPD included not practicing breast feeding (OR = 186.72, 95% CI = 8.32 - 4188.35), family history of mental illness (OR = 4.95, 95% CI = 1.04 - 23.81) and pregnancy lasting beyond 40 weeks (OR = 7.26, 95% CI = 1.51 - 34.88). High incidence of PPD with numerous associated but largely modifiable risk factors call for more proactive measures, such as PPD screening among pregnant women.
