Effect of serum testosterone and percent tumor volume on extra-prostatic extension and biochemical recurrence after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy

Several studies have revealed that the preoperative serum testosterone and percent tumor volume （PTV） predict extra-prostatic extension （EPE） and biochemical recurrence （BCR） after radical prostatectomy. This study investigated the prognostic significance of serum testosterone and PTV in relation to EPE and BCR after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy （LRP）. We reviewed 520 patients who underwent LRP between 2004 and 2012. PTV was determined as the sum of all visually estimated tumor foci in every section. BCR was defined as two consecutive increases in the postoperative prostate-specific antigen （PSA）〉0.2 ng ml^-1. The threshold for serum total testosterone was 3.0 ng ml^-1, Multivariate logistic regression was used to define the effect of variables on the risk of EPE and BCR. A low serum testosterone （〈3.0 ng ml^-1） was associated with a high serum PSA, Gleason score, positive core percentage of the prostate biopsy, PTV, and all pathological variables. On multivariate analysis, similar to previous studies, the serum PSA, biopsy positive core percentage, Gleason score, and pathological variables predicted EPE and BCR. In addition, low serum testosterone （〈3.0 ng ml^-1, adjusted OR, 8.52; 95% CI, 5.04-14.4, P = 0.001） predicted EPE and PTV （adjusted OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.05, P = 0.046） predicted BCR. In addition to previous predictors of EPE and BCR, low serum testosterone and PTV are valuable predictors of EPE and BCR after LRP.

As a preliminary study for the erection of floating structures using high performance concrete, this paper examines the bond characteristics between concrete and the reinforcing bar. Since the floating structure is constructed in aquatic environment, corrosion of the reinforcing steel is likely to develop more prematurely than in onshore structure in case of concrete cracking. A solution to this corrosion problem could use FRP rebar instead of steel reinforcement. To that goal, an experimental study is conducted on the concrete-FRP bond strength to verify if such FRP rebar develops performance comparable to the conventional steel rebar. A series of tests are performed considering the bond length of ordinary steel rebar and G-FRP rebar as test variable with respect to the strength of concrete, and the results are presented.

This paper presents a distributed wireless sensor network for multiple mobile agents localization. Localization of mobile agents, such as mobile robots, humans, and moving objects, in an indoor space is essential for robot-robot interaction (RRI) and human-robot interaction (HRI). The standard localization system, which is based on sensors installed in the robot body, is not suitable for multiple agents. Therefore, the concept of sensor network, which uses wireless sensors distributed in a specified space, is used in this study. By analyzing related studies, two solutions are proposed for the localization of mobile agents including humans: a new hardware system and a new software algorithm. The first solution focuses on the architectural design of the wireless sensor network for multiple agent localization. A passive RFID system is used, and then the architecture of the sensor network is adapted to suit the target system. The second solution centers on a localization algorithm based on the sensor network. The proposed localization algorithm improves the accuracy in the multiple agent localization system. The algorithm uses the displacement conditions of the mobile agents and the recognition changes between the RFID tags and RFID reader. Through experiments using a real platform, the usefulness of the proposed system is verified.

Cardiac infiltration of amyloid fibril results in progressive cardiomyopathy with a grave prognosis and results in cardiac diseases such as congestive heart disease, cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, and arrhythmias. We present a rare case of cardiac amyloidosis initially misdiagnosed as syndrome X in which recurrent chest pain and progressive heart failure could be managed finally by heart transplantation.

In multicellular organisms, controlling the timing and extent of asymmetric cell divisions （ACDs） is crucial for correct patterning. During post-embryonic root development in Arabidopsis thaliana, ground tissue （GT） maturation involves an additional ACD of the endodermis, which generates two different tissues： the endo- dermis （inner） and the middle cortex （outer）. It has been reported that the abscisic acid （ABA） and gibberellin （GA） pathways are involved in middle cortex （MC） formation. However, the molecular mechanisms under- lying the interaction between ABA and GA during GT maturation remain largely unknown. Through transcriptome analyses, we identified a previously uncharacterized C2H2-type zinc finger gene, whose expression is regulated by GA and ABA, thus named GAZ （GA- AND ABA-RESPONSIVE ZINC FINGER）. Seedlings ectopically overexpressing GAZ （GAZ-OX） were sensitive to ABA and GA during MC formation, whereas GAZ-SRDX and RNAi seedlings displayed opposite phenotypes. In addition, our results indicated that GAZ was involved in the transcriptional regulation of ABA and GA homeostasis. In agreement with pre- vious studies that ABA and GA coordinate to control the timing of MC formation, we also confirmed the unique interplay between ABA and GA and identified factors and regulatory networks bridging the two hor- mone pathways during GT maturation of the Arabidopsis root.
