Iterative static modeling of channelized reservoirs using history-matched facies probability data and rejection of training image

Most inverse reservoir modeling techniques require many forward simulations, and the posterior models cannot preserve geological features of prior models. This study proposes an iterative static modeling approach that utilizes dynamic data for rejecting an unsuitable training image(TI) among a set of TI candidates and for synthesizing history-matched pseudo-soft data. The proposed method is applied to two cases of channelized reservoirs, which have uncertainty in channel geometry such as direction, amplitude, and width. Distance-based clustering is applied to the initial models in total to select the qualified models efficiently. The mean of the qualified models is employed as a history-matched facies probability map in the next iteration of static models. Also, the most plausible TI is determined among TI candidates by rejecting other TIs during the iteration. The posterior models of the proposed method outperform updated models of ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF) and ensemble smoother(ES) because they describe the true facies connectivity with bimodal distribution and predict oil and water production with a reasonable range of uncertainty. In terms of simulation time, it requires 30 times of forward simulation in history matching, while the EnKF and ES need 9000 times and 200 times, respectively.

Clinical characteristics of sibling patients with comitant strabismus

AIM：To investigate the clinical characteristics of sibling patients with comitant strabismus. METHODS：Sibling patients who were diagnosed with comitant strabismus from January 2005 to December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Factors including age, sex, types of strabismus, refractive errors, angle of deviation, and coexistence of other strabismus were analyzed. RESULTS：A total of 62 patients（31 pairs of siblings） were included. Of these, 26 pairs had intermittent exotropia, 3 had accommodative esotropia, and 2 had infantile esotropia. There were no pairs with different subtypes of strabismus. The age at first visit was 3.7±2.6y and the mean follow-up period was 30.5±24.1mo. In siblings with intermittent exotropia, there was no difference in age of onset, age at operation, or refractive errors between the first and second-born children. The 20（77%） pairs of siblings with exotropia showed more than 80% concordance of maximum angle of deviation during follow-up. In the 9 pairs in which both siblings had an operation, the final angle of deviation after the operation was 8.2±8.1 prism diopters（PD） in first-born children and 8.6±6.5 PD in second-born children. CONCLUSION：The subtypes of strabismus are the same in all pairs of siblings and clinical characteristics of strabismus are similar between the first and secondborn children. This similarity could be an indicator for the diagnosis of second-born children. Further prospective study including a larger number of sibling patients is needed.

Distribution of Chancelloriids in a Middle Cambrian Carbonate Platform Deposit, Taebaek Group, Korea

The onset of the Cambrian witnessed the diversification of ＂small shelly fossils （SSF）＂, which affected carbonate depositional system. One of the problematic SSF, chancelloriids, are common components of the early to middle Cambrian carbonate and shale, and their contributions toward Cambrian carbonates are not yet fully understood. This study assesses distribution patterns of chancelloriid sclerites in the Cambrian Series 3 Daegi Formation based on microfacies analysis and discusses their sedimentologic implications. In the lower part of the formation, partially articulated chancelloriid sclerites occur mainly in bioclastic packstone and grainstone facies, with isolated sclerite rays in nodular packstone to grainstone facies. In the middle part of the formation, chancelloriid fragments occur only sporadically in bioclastic wackestone to packstone, bioclastic grainstone and oolitic packstone to grainstone facies, whereas boundstone facies are nearly devoid of their fragments. There are no chancelloriid fragments in the upper part of the formation, which consists of oolitic packstone to grainstone facies. Chancelloriids are interpreted to have primarily occupied platform margin shoal environments, shedding their sclerites to surrounding areas, and thus contributed as sediment producers. The distribution of Daegi chancelloriid sclerites is similar to other Cambrian examples, with the exception of common chancelloriids in Cambrian Series 2 reefs and their apparent near absence in the Daegi and other Cambrian Series 3 reefs. This disparity resulted from changes in the ecologic niche of chancelloriids after the end-Cambrian Series 2 reef crisis, coupled with an overall decline of chancelloriids in the middle Cambrian.

Synthesis of a Rod-rod Diblock Copolymer, Poly (3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(furfuryl isocyanate), through the Anionic Polymerization with an Oxyanionic Macroinitiator

A rod-rod diblock copolymer (diBCP), poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(furfuryl isocyanate)(P3HT-b-PFIC), was synthesized through the anionic polymerization with an oxyanionic macroinitiator of P3HT. The properties of the diBCP (molecular weight, dispersity, composition, thermal stability, UV-visible absorption, and thin film morphology) were determined by various analytical methods. P3HT-b-PFIC was blended with C60 in a toluene solution to prepare a thin film of binary electron donor/acceptor system. Such blending enabled partial conjugation of the two components by the Diels-Alder reaction between furan and C60 at 60℃ for 3 h;the mixture was then spin-cast as a thin film, and annealed at 250℃ for 24 h. Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that P3HT and C60 domains had nanoscale interfaces without a large phase segregation. This result indicated that the microphase separation of C60-functionalized P3HT-b-PFIC preserved even at high temperature provided free C60 molecules with channels to diffuse on the sides of P3HT domain, thus preventing the macroscopic crystallization of free C60 through the interfacial stabilization.

Dear Editor,Plant tissue culture involves callus formation and de novo shoot regeneration.First,explants from differentiated tissues are used to generate a pluripotent cell mass,called callus,on auxin-rich callus-inducing medium(CIM),followed by shoot regeneration on cytokinin-rich shoot-inducing medium(SiM).Callus results from division of pericycle-like cells(Atta et al.,2009;Sugimoto et al.,2010);its cellular identity resembles that of lateral root primordia(Atta et al.,2009;Sugimoto et al.,2010).Callus acquires cellular pluripotency by forming root stem cell niches on CIM(Sugimoto et al.,2010)。

BACKGROUND Few studies have been conducted on sex differences in the incidence, pathophysiology, and prognosis of gastric cancer(GC).AIM To analyze the differences in GC characteristics according to sex in patients who underwent surgical treatment for GC.METHODS A total of 2983 patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma who received surgical treatment at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between 2003 and 2017 were included.Baseline clinicopathological characteristics, histologic type of GC, overall and GC-specific survival rates, and associated risk factors were analyzed.RESULTS Among the 2983 patients, 2005(67.2%) and 978(32.8%) were males and females, respectively.The average age of the female group(59.36 years) was significantly younger than that of the male group(61.66 years;P < 0.001).Cancer of the gastric body(P < 0.001) and diffuse-type histology(P < 0.001) were more common in females than in males.This trend was more prominent in females younger than 60 years of age, with a significantly higher proportion of diffuse-type cancer than in the male group.Regardless of sex, diffuse-type GC was more common in younger patients, and the proportion of intestinal-type GC increased with age.The overall survival rate was significantly higher in females(P < 0.001).However, this difference disappeared for GC-specific survival(P = 0.168), except for the poor GC-specific survival rate in advanced-stage cancer(stage Ⅲ or above) in females(P = 0.045).The risk factors for GC-related mortality were older age, upper location of GC, and diffuse-or mixed-type histology.In terms of comorbidities, more males died from diseases other than GC, including other malignancies such as lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer, and respiratory diseases such as interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while there were relatively more cardiovascular or cerebrovascular deaths in females.CONCLUSION Sex-based differences in GC were observed in clinicopathological features, includ

Modeling and Hardware-in-the-Loop System Realization of Electric Machine Drives-A Review

This paper presents a state-of-the-art review in modeling approach of hardware in the loop simulation(HILS)realization of electric machine drives using commercial real time machines.HILS implementation using digital signal processors(DSPs)and field programmable gate array(FPGA)for electric machine drives has been investigated but those methods have drawbacks such as complexity in development and verification.Among various HILS implementation approaches,more efficient development and verification for electric machine drives can be achieved through use of commercial real time machines.As well as implementation of the HILS,accurate modeling of a control target system plays an important role.Therefore,modeling trend in electric machine drives for HILS implementation is needed to be reviewed.This paper provides a background of HILS and commercially available real time machines and characteristics of each real time machine are introduced.Also,recent trends and progress of permanent magnet synchronous machines(PMSMs)modeling are presented for providing more accurate HILS implementation approaches in this paper.

Photopatterning via photofluidization of azobenzene polymers

In current photo-based patterning techniques,an image is projected onto a photosensitive material to generate a pattern in the area where the light is focused.Thus,the size,shape,and periodicity of the pattern are determined by the features on the photomask or projected images,and the materials themselves generally do not play an active role in changing the features.In contrast,azobenzene polymers offer a unique type of photopatterning platform,where photoisomerization of the azobenzene groups can induce substantial material movements at the molecular,micro-,and macroscales.Stable surface relief patterns can be generated by exposure to interference light beams.Thus,periodic nano-and microstructures can be fabricated with both two-and three-dimensional spatial control over a large area in a remarkably simple way.Polarized light can be used to guide the flow of solid azobenzene polymers along the direction of light polarization via an unusual solid-to-liquid transition,allowing for the fabrication of complex structures using light.This review summarizes the recent progress in advanced manufacturing using azobenzene polymers.This includes a brief introduction of the intriguing optical behaviors of azobenzene polymers,followed by discussions of the recent developments and successful applications of azobenzene polymers,especially in micro-and nanofabrication.

mitochondrial-targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensor molecules. Among them, the most widely applied mitochondrial targeting moiety is triphenylphosphonium(TPP), which is a delocalized cationic lipid that readily accumulates and penetrates through the mitochondrial membrane due to the highly negative mitochondrial membrane potential. Other moieties, including short peptides,dequalinium, guanidine, rhodamine, and F16, are also known to be promising mitochondrial targeting agents. Direct conjugation of mitochondrial targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensors results in increased cytotoxicity, anti-oxidizing activity and sensing activity, respectively,compared with their non-targeting counterparts, especially in drug-resistant cells. Although many mitochondria-targeted anticancer drug conjugates have been investigated in vitro and in vivo, further clinical studies are still needed. On the other hand, several mitochondria-targeting antioxidants have been analyzed in clinical phases I, II and III trials, and one conjugate has been approved for treating eye disease in Russia. There are numerous ongoing studies of mitochondria-targeted sensors.

Priapism secondary to penile metastasis of rectal cancer

Metastatic penile carcinoma is rare and usually originates from genitourinary tumors. The presenting symptoms or signs have been described as nonspecific except for priapism. Rectal adenocarcinoma is a very unusual source of metastatic penile carcinoma. We report a case of metastatic penile carcinoma that originated from the rectum. Symptomatic improvement occurred with palliative radiotherapy.
