Characterization and Propagation of Historical and Projected Droughts in the Umatilla River Basin, Oregon, USA

Climate change is expected to have long-term impacts on drought and wildfire risks in Oregon as summers continue to become warmer and drier. This paper investigates the projected changes in drought characteristics and drought propagation in the Umatilla River Basin in northeastern Oregon for mid-century(2030–2059) and late-century(2070–2099) climate scenarios. Drought characteristics for projected climates were determined using downscaled CMIP5 climate datasets from ten climate models and Soil and Water Assessment Tool to simulate effects on hydrologic processes. Short-term(three months) drought characteristics(frequency, duration, and severity) were analyzed using four drought indices, including the Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI-3), Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI-3), Standardized Streamflow Index(SSI-3), and the Standardized Soil Moisture Index(SSMI-3). Results indicate that short-term meteorological droughts are projected to become more prevalent, with up to a 20% increase in the frequency of SPI-3drought events. Short-term hydrological droughts are projected to become more frequent(average increase of 11% in frequency of SSI-3 drought events), more severe, and longer in duration(average increase of 8% for short-term droughts).Similarly, short-term agricultural droughts are projected to become more frequent(average increase of 28% in frequency of SSMI-3 drought events) but slightly shorter in duration(average decrease of 4%) in the future. Historically, drought propagation time from meteorological to hydrological drought is shorter than from meteorological to agricultural drought in most sub-basins. For the projected climate scenarios, the decrease in drought propagation time will likely stress the timing and capacity of water supply in the basin for irrigation and other uses.

Differential Expression of Iron Deficiency Responsive Rice Genes under Low Phosphorus and Iron Toxicity Conditions and Association of OsIRO3 with Yield in Acidic Soils

With the hypothesis that iron(Fe) deficiency responsive genes may play a role in Fe toxicity conditions,we studied five such genes OsNAS1,OsNAS3,OsIRO2,OsIRO3 and OsYSL16 across six contrasting rice genotypes for expression under high Fe and low phosphorus(P) conditions,and sequence polymorphism.Genotypes Sahbhagi Dhan,Chakhao Poirieton and Shasharang were high yielders with no bronzing symptom visible under Fe toxic field conditions,and BAM350 and BAM811 were low yielders but did not show bronzing symptoms.Hydroponic screening revealed that the number of crown roots and root length can be traits for consideration for identifying Fe toxicity tolerance in rice genotypes.Fe contents in rice roots and shoots of a high-yielding genotype KMR3 showing leaf bronzing were significantly high.In response to 24 h high Fe stress,the expression levels of OsNAS3 were up-regulated in all genotypes except KMR3.In response to 48 h high Fe stress,the expression levels of OsNAS1 were3-fold higher in tolerant Shasharang,whereas in KMR3,it was significantly down-regulated.Even in response to 7 d excess Fe stress,the transcript abundances of OsIRO2 and OsNAS3 were contrasting in genotypes Shasharang and KMR3.This suggested that the reported Fe deficiency genes had a role in Fe toxicity and that in genotype KMR3 under excess Fe stress,there was disruption of metal homeostasis.Under the 48 h low P conditions,OsIRO2 and OsYSL16 were significantly up-regulated in Fe tolerant genotype Shasharang and in low P tolerant genotype Chakhao Poirieton,respectively.In silico sequence analysis across 3 024 rice genotypes revealed polymorphism for 4 genes.Sequencing across OsIRO3and OsNAS3 revealed nucleotide polymorphism between tolerant and susceptible genotypes for Fe toxicity.Non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms and insertion/deletions(InDels) differing in tolerant and susceptible genotypes were identified.A marker targeting 25-bp InDel in OsIRO3,when run on a diverse panel of 43 rice genotypes and a biparental population,was associated

Clinical outcome of orbital apex syndrome in COVID associated mucormycosis patients in a tertiary care hospital

AIM: To share clinical pattern of presentation, the modalities of surgical intervention and the one month postsurgical outcome of rhino-orbito-mucormycosis(ROCM) cases.METHODS: All COVID associated mucormycosis(CAM) patients underwent comprehensive multidisciplinar y examination by ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist and physician. Patients with clinical and radiological evidence of orbital apex involvement were included in the study. Appropriate medical and surgical intervention were done to each patient. Patients were followed up one-month post intervention. RESULTS: Out of 89 CAM patients, 31(34.8%) had orbital apex syndrome. Sixty-six(74.2%) of such patients had pre-existing diabetes mellitus, 18(58%) patients had prior documented use of steroid use, and 55(61.8%) had no light perception(LP) presenting vision. Blepharoptosis, proptosis, complete ophthalmoplegia were common clinical findings. Seventeen(19.1%) of such patients had variable amount of cavernous sinus involvement. Endoscopic debridement of paranasal sinuses and orbit with or without eyelid sparing limited orbital exenteration was done in most cases, 34(38.2%) patients could retain vision in the affected eye. CONCLUSION: Orbital apex involvement in CAM patients occur very fast. It not only leads to loss of vision but also sacrifice of the eyeball, orbital contents and eyelids. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention can preserve life, vision and spare mutilating surgeries.

Illumination-Free Clustering Using Improved Slime Mould Algorithm for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Image Segmentation

Partitional clustering techniques such as K-Means(KM),Fuzzy C-Means(FCM),and Rough K-Means(RKM)are very simple and effective techniques for image segmentation.But,because their initial cluster centers are randomly determined,it is often seen that certain clusters converge to local optima.In addition to that,pathology image segmentation is also problematic due to uneven lighting,stain,and camera settings during the microscopic image capturing process.Therefore,this study proposes an Improved Slime Mould Algorithm(ISMA)based on opposition based learning and differential evolution’s mutation strategy to perform illumination-free White Blood Cell(WBC)segmentation.The ISMA helps to overcome the local optima trapping problem of the partitional clustering techniques to some extent.This paper also performs a depth analysis by considering only color components of many well-known color spaces for clustering to find the effect of illumination over color pathology image clustering.Numerical and visual results encourage the utilization of illumination-free or color component-based clustering approaches for image segmentation.ISMA-KM and“ab”color channels of CIELab color space provide best results with above-99%accuracy for only nucleus segmentation.Whereas,for entire WBC segmentation,ISMA-KM and the“CbCr”color component of YCbCr color space provide the best results with an accuracy of above 99%.Furthermore,ISMA-KM and ISMA-RKM have the lowest and highest execution times,respectively.On the other hand,ISMA provides competitive outcomes over CEC2019 benchmark test functions compared to recent well-established and efficient Nature-Inspired Optimization Algorithms(NIOAs).

Study of Flow Field inside a Rectangular Air Intake with Pointed Cowl for Different Back Pressures at Mach 2.2

Computations and Experiments were performed to get an understanding of the flow field around a rectangular supersonic air intake with pointed cowl [90°] at different back pressures for Mach 2.2. The effect of Cowl shape on the ramp surface pressure distribution is discussed and compared with existing V-Notch [90°] intake model at free exit condition. It was found that using pointed cowl [90°] intake model, a better pressure recovery was achieved compared to the V-Notch [90°] intake model at Mach 2.2. Both Pointed and V-Notch intake models showed good starting characteristics. For change in back pressure, the occurence of normal shock, flow separation zone and flow reversal were observed. All experiments are performed only for the Pointed cowl [90°] intake model. All the 3-D computations were performed by using software available at B.I.T, Mesra, Ranchi.

Two-echelon imperfect production supply chain with probabilistic deterioration rework and reliability under fuzziness

This paper develops an integrated fuzzy two-layer supply chain for manufacturersand retailers with defective and non-defective types of products. The manufacturerproduces up to a specific time, including both faulty and non-defective items, andpost-screening only the non-defective item sends to the retailer. The strategy of theretailer is to do the screening of items received from the manufacturer.Subsequently, the perfect quality items use to fulfill the demand of thecustomer, and the defective items are reworked. The retailer considers thatcustomer demand is time and reliability dependent. The proposed supply chainconsiders probabilistic deterioration for the manufacturer and retailers. Theoptimum solution of the given model is evaluated for both the cases of crispand fuzzy environments on the strategies such as production rate, unitproduction cost, idle time, screening, rework, etc. Managerial insights and theeffect of parameters on the optimal inventory under fuzziness are presented.

Fabrication of Biomimetic Transparent and Flexible Pectin/PEG Composite Film for Temperature Sensing Applications

In the field of robotics to enhance the interaction with humans in real-time and in the bioengineering field to develop prosthetic devices, the need for artificial skin is in high demand. In this work, the hydrogen-bonded complex network structure of the Pectin/PEG composite has been designed, resulting in the free-standing film functioning as a temperature-sensing device. With the gelation technique and the addition of PEG, the film’s flexibility and conductivity were enhanced. The fabricated device worked at a low voltage of 1 V supply with high throughput. With different dimensions, three devices were fabricated, and the maximum-induced ionic current was 34 µA ± 5%. The device has an average sensitivity of 1.3–2.7 µA/°C over the range of 30 °C to 42 °C. The device's fastest response time to sense the temperature change was 2 s ± 5%. The present device exhibits good stability for a long duration of time. These pectin/PEG films can be used as biomimetic skin to improve the efficiency in sensing the temperature.

Interfacial solar-driven evaporation technique is an environmental friendly and cost-effective advanced approach for water purification using solar energy.Free energy sources are effectively utilized using the structural design of evaporators and functional materials.In this work,we have fabricated a solar-driven interfacial evaporation device with Banana Pseudo Stem(BPS)and a photothermal layer made up of PVA PDMS Carbon(PPC)is attached to it.High evaporation rate of 2.03 kg m^(−2) h^(−1) is achieved by the system under 1 sun illumination.Heat localization on interfacial surface,reflectance of photothermal layer,presence of micro-fluidic channels in BPS were studied using IR imaging,UV-DRS and SEM characterization techniques,respectively.Effective localization of interfacial temperature around 53℃ and very low reflectance of photothermal layer substantiates high photothermal conversion efficiency of the device.The complete purification of water containing high concentration of Rhodamine-B dye using BPS is a novel and simple approach for water purification.This is an eco-friendly,cost-efficient novel approach in fabrication of interfacial solar-driven evaporation system with high evaporation rate for purification of water containing high concentration of organic dye.

Sliding mode control(SMC)has been studied since the 1950s and widely used in practical applications due to its insensitivity to matched disturbances.The aim of this paper is to present a review of SMC describing the key developments and examining the new trends and challenges for its application to power electronic systems.The fundamental theory of SMC is briefly reviewed and the key technical problems associated with the implementation of SMC to power converters and drives,such chattering phenomenon and variable switching frequency,are discussed and analyzed.The recent developments in SMC systems,future challenges and perspectives of SMC for power converters are discussed.
