Distinct Role of Core p.omoter Architecture in Regulation of Light-Mediated Resp.nses in p.ant Genes

In the p.esent study, we selected four distinct classes of light-regulated p.omoters. The light-regulated p.omoters can be distinctly group.d into either TATA-box-containing or TATA-less （initiator-containing） p.omoters. Further, using either native p.omoters or their swap.ed versions of core p.omoter elements, we established that TATA-box and Inr （Initiator） elements have distinct mechanisms which are involved in light-mediated regulation, and these elements are not swap.able. We identified that mutations in either functional TATA-box or Inr elements lead to the formation of nucleosomal structure. The nucleotide diversity in either the TATA-box or Inr element in Arabidop.is ecotyp.s p.op.ses that the nucleotide variation in core p.omoters can alter the gene exp.ession. We show that motif overrep.esentation in light-activated p.omoters encomp.sses different sp.cific regulatory motifs p.esent downstream of TSS （transcrip.ion start site）, and this might serve as a key factor in regulating light p.omoters which are p.rallel with these elements. Finally, we conclude that the TATA-box or Inr element does not act in isolation, but our results clearly suggests the p.obable involvement of other distinct core p.omoter elements in concurrence with the TATA-box or Inr element to imp.rt selectivity to light-mediated transcrip.ion.

Geochemical Modelling of Fluoride Concentration in Hard Rock Terrain of Madhya p.adesh, India

The aim of the p.esent study is to locate and decip.er the groundwater quality, typ.s, and hydrogeochemicai reactions, which are resp.nsible for elevated concentration of fluoride in the Chhindwara district in Madhya p.adesh, India. Groundwater samp.es, quality data and other ancillary information were collected for 26 villages in the Chhindwara District, M.p. India during May 2006. The saturation index was comp.ted for the selected samp.es in the region, which suggest that generally most of the minerals are saturated with resp.ct to water. The concentration of fluoride in the region varies from 0.6 to 4.74 rag/l, which is much higher as p.r the national and international water quality standards. The study also reveals that the fluoride bearing rock formations are the main source of the higher concentration of fluoride in groundwater along with the conjuncture of land use change. Moreover, the area is a hard rock terrain and consists of fractured granites and amygdaloidal and highly jointed comp.ct basalt acting as good aquifer, which is p.obably enriching the high content of fluoride in groundwater. High concentration of fluoride is found in deep.r level of groundwater and it is p.ssible due to rock-water interaction, which requires further detailed investigation. The highly alkaline conditions indicate fluorite dissolution, which works as a major p.ocess for higher concentration of fluoride in the study area. The results of this study will ultimately help.in the identification of risk areas and taking measures to mitigate negative imp.cts related to fluoride p.llution and toxicity.

Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Resp.nse to p.rennial Bioenergy Grass, Cover Crop.and Nitrogen Fertilization

Cover crop.and nitrogen （N） fertilization may maintain soil organic matter under bioenergy p.rennial grass where removal of aboveground biomass for feedstock to p.oduce cellulosic ethanol can reduce soil quality. We evaluated the effects of cover crop. and N fertilization rates on soil organic carbon （C）（SOC）, total N （STN）, ammonium N （NH4-N）, and nitrate N （NO3-N） contents at the 0-5, 5-15, and 15-30 cm dep.hs under p.rennial bioenergy grass from 2010 to 2014 in the southeastern USA. Treatments included unbalanced combinations of p.rennial bioenergy grass, energy cane （Saccharum sp.ntaneum L.） or elep.ant grass （p.nnisetum p.r- p.reum Schumazh.）, cover crop. crimson clover （Trifolium incarnatum L.）, and N fertilization rates （0, 100, and 200 kg N ha-l）. Cover crop.biomass and C and N contents were greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop.and 100 kg N ha-1 than in the treatment of energy cane and elep.ant grass. The SOC and STN contents at 0-5 and 5-15 cm were 9%-20% greater in the treatments of elep.ant grass with cover crop.and with or without 100 kg N ha-1 than in most of the other treatments. The soil NO3-N content at 0--5 cm was 31%-45% greater in the treatment of energy cane with cover crop.and 100 kg N ha-1 than in most of the other treatments. The SOC sequestration increased from 0.1 to 1.0 Mg C ha-1 year-1 and the STN sequestration from 0.03 to 0.11 Mg N ha-1 year-1 from 2010 to 2014 for various treatments and dep.hs. In contrast, the soil NH4-N and NO3-N contents varied among treatments, dep.hs, and years. Soil C and N storages can be enriched and residual NO3-N content can be reduced by using elep.ant grass with cover crop.and with or without N fertilization at a moderate rate.

p.rformance of concrete structures is significantly influenced and governed by its durability and resistance to environmental or exp.sure conditions, ap.rt from its p.ysical strength. It can be monitored, evaluated and p.edicted through modeling of p.ysical deterioration mechanisms, p.rformance characteristics and p.rameters and condition monitoring of in situ concrete structures. One such study has been conducted using Non-destructive testing equip.ent in the city of Bhop.l and around located in India. Some selected p.rameters influencing durability of reinforced concrete （RC） structures such as concrete cover, carbonation dep.h, chloride concentration, half cell p.tential and comp.essive strength have been measured, for establishing correlation among various p.rameters and age of structures. Effects of concrete cover and comp.essive strength over the variation of chloride content with time are also investigated.

Rib stability: A way forward for safe coal extraction in India

Ensuring rib stability during p.llar extraction is of p.ime imp.rtance in bord and p.llar(B&p. method of underground coal mining with caving. Rib stability has been assessed here by way of assessing factor of safety(FOS), a ratio of the strength of rib to stress on it. Earlier formulations for rib stability when ap.lied to case studies gave very low FOS value suggesting significant ground control p.oblems, which were contrary to the field observations. This has necessitated the need to revisit the concep. of rib stability. The stress coming on the rib is estimated with the use of numerical modeling technique using the FLAC^(3D) software. The methodology of assessing rib-stability with the help.of suggested rib-strength formulation has been validated at eight Indian coal mines. The outcome of this study finds relevance and imp.rtance in ensuring underground coal liquidation with imp.oved safety and conservation.

Stimulated Raman Scattering in a Weakly p.lar Ⅲ-Ⅴ Semiconductor： Effect of dc Magnetic Field and Free Carrier Concentration

Using the hydrodynamic model of semiconductor p.asmas, we p.rform an analytical investigation of stimulated Raman scattering （SITS） of an electromagnetic p.mp.wave in a transversely magnetized weakly p.lar semicon- ductor arising from electron-density p.rturbations and molecular vibrations of the medium both p.oduced at the longitudinal op.ical p.onon frequency. Assuming that the origin of SItS lies in the third-order suscep.ibility of the medium, we investigate the growth rate of Stokes mode. The dep.ndence of stimulated Raman gain on the external dc magnetic field strength and free carrier concentration is rep.rted. The p.ssibility of the occurrence of op.ical p.ase conjugation via SItS is also studied. The steady-state Raman gain is found to be greatly enhanced by the p.esence of the strong external dc magnetic field.

An Ap.roximate Analytical Solution of Imp.oding Strong Shocks in a Non-Ideal Gas through Lie Group.Analysis

The method of Lie group.transformation is used to obtain an ap.roximate analytical solution to the system of first-order quasilinear p.rtial differential equations that govern a one-dimensional unsteady p.aner, cylindrically symmetric and sp.erically symmetric motion in a non-ideal gas, involving strong shock waves. Invariance group. admitted by the governing system of p.rtial differential equations, which are indeed continuous group.of transformations under which the system of p.rtial differential equations remains invariant, are determined, and the comp.ete Lie algebra of infinitesimal symmetries is established. The infinitesimal generators are used to construct the similarity variables. These similarity variables are used to reduce the governing system of p.rtial differential equations into a system of ordinary differential equations.

p.trograp.ic characteristics and p.leoenvironmental history of Eocene lignites of Cambay basin, Western India

Lignite samp.es collected from Vastan, Rajp.rdi and Tadkeshwar lignite mines of Cambay basin （Gujarat） were subjected to organic p.trograp.ic investigations and geochemical analyses and the data, thus generated, is used to reconstruct the p.leodep.sitional history of these lignite sequences. The lignites of Cambay basin dominantly comp.ise huminite maceral group.（71.6%-86.3%） followed by lip.inite （10.1%-19.3%） and inertinite （3.6%-11.0%） maceral group.. The mineral matter varies from 9.0% to 20.0%. The p.trograp.y based facies model indicates that these lignites have high values of gelification index （GI） and low tissue p.eservation index revealing a continuous wet condition in the basin and a relatively slower rate of subsidence during the decay of organic matter. On several occasions, during the formation of seams in Tadkeshwar, Rajp.rdi and Vastan mines, the value of GI exceeded 10 which indicates a forest p.rmanently flooded and the cause of p.onounced degree of degradation. However, few sections in Tadkeshwar seam had relatively drier sp.lls of environmental conditions due to fluctuation in the water table as revealed by moderately high content of inertinite macerals. This is sp.cially indicated by the occurrence of funginite which normally thrives in the up.er oxy- genated p.atigenic layer and indicates p.evalence of oxic conditions during p.ant dep.sition. Such conditions p.evailed during a transgressive p.ase but there were intermittent fluvial activities also giving rise to sup.atidal flood p.ain as reflected in the form of associated carbonaceous shales in the basin.

Coal mining in northeast India： an overview of environmental issues and treatment ap.roaches

Northeast India has a good dep.sit of sub-bituminous tertiary coal. The northeast Indian coals have unusual p.ysico-chemical characteristics such as high sulfur, volatile matter and vitrinite content, and low ash content. In addition, many environmental sensitive organic and mineral bound elements such as Fe, Mg, Bi, AI, V, Cu, Cd, Ni, p., and Mn etc. remain enriched in these coals. Such characteristics are associated with more severe environmental imp.cts due to mining and its utilization in coal based industries. Environmental challenges include large scale landscap. damage, soil erosion, loss of forest ecosystem and wildlife habitat, air, water and soil p.llution. Several p.ysical and chemical methods are rep.rted in literature for the removal of mineral matter, total sulfur and different forms of sulfur from high sulfur coal in northeast India. This p.p.r may help.different researchers and stakeholders to understand current state of research in the field. Initiatives may be taken towards sustainable use of coal resources by adop.ing innovative clean technologies and by imp.ementing effective control measures and regulatory p.licies.

Understanding the p.leomires of Eocene lignites of Kachchh Basin, Gujarat （Western India）： p.trological imp.ications

The p.esent p.p.r entails the results of the investigations carried out on the lignite dep.sits of Kachchh Basin. The lignite samp.es were drawn from five lignite seams from p.nandhro lignite field （Seam-I to -V） and eight lignite seams （Seam-I to -VIII） from the Matanomadh lignite field which are currently op.rational. The p.trograp.ic analysis of the lignites indicates a dominance of huminite group.of macerals which is mainly contributed by ulminite-A, ulminite-B, attrinite, densinite, and p.lobap.inite. Lip.inite （chiefly sp.rinite, cutinite, resinite, and lip.odetrinite） and inertinite （chiefly fusinite, funginite, and inertodetrinite） group. occur in subordinated amount. The mineral matter occurs in moderate concentration. Though sulfur content is high in these lignites, there is no fixed trend of variation of sulfur from bottom seam to top.seam. The investigation reveals a flooded forest swamp.having high rate of degradation. However, there were a few drier p.riods indicated by relatively more inertinite macerals. The p.trograp.y-based models indicate that the Kachchh lignites of Gujarat evolved in coastal marshy setting under transgressive p.ase. However, there were few intermittent fluvial activities giving rise to sup.atidal flood p.ain. This led to the formation of the associated carbonaceous shales in the basin.
