Impact of global climate change on stream low flows:A case study of the great Miami river watershed, Ohio, USA

Climate change will profoundly affect hydrological processes at various temporal and spatial *** study is focused on assessing the alteration of water resources availability and low flows frequencies driven by changing climates in different time periods of the 21st *** study evaluates the adaptability of prevailing Global Circulation Models(GCMs)on a particular watershed through streamflow *** analysis was conducted in the Great Miami River Watershed,Ohio by analyzing historical and future simulated streamflow using 10 climate model outputs and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT).The climate change scenarios,consisting of ten downscaled Coupled Model Intercomparision Project Phase 5(CMIP5)climate models in combination with two Representative Concentration Pathways(RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5)were selected based on the correlation between observed records and model *** for three future periods,2016-2043,2044-2071 and 2072-2099,were independently analyzed and compared with the baseline period(1988-2015).Results from the average of ten models projected that 7-day low flows in the watershed would increase by 19%in the 21st century under both *** trend was also consistent for both hydrological(7Q10,1Q10)and biological low flow statistics(4b3,1b3).Similarly,average annual flow and monthly flows would also increase in future periods,especially in the *** flows simulated by SWAT in response to the majority of climate model projections showed a consistent increase in low flow ***,the flow estimates using the Max-Planck-Institute Earth System Model(MPI-ESM-LR)climate output resulted in the biological based low flows(4b3,1b3)decreasing by 22.5%and 33.4%under RCP 4.5 and 56.9%and 63.7%under RCP 8.5,respectively,in the future when compared to the baseline ***,the low flow ensemble from the 10 climate models for the 21st century seemed to be slightly higher than that of historical low flows.

Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the rural population in the chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology(CKDu)zone of the North Central Province(NCP)in Sri *** this study,a total of 334 groundwater samples(311 dug wells,21 tube wells and 2 springs)during the wet season from two aquifers in the NCP were collected,and inves-tigated their chemical characteristics and evaluate their water quality,including ground-water chemistry,main ion sources,the corrosion and scaling potential of *** results showed that the two hydrochemical types of groundwater in the NCP were mainly of the Ca-HCO_(3),Na·Ca-HCO_(3)types,with the main HCO_(3)−,Na^(+)and Ca^(2+)ions in both types of groundwater originating from silicate and evaporite salt dissolution and influenced by alternating cation adsorption,while the presence of NO_(3)−was mainly ***-uation ofwater stability using namely Langelier saturation index(LSI),Ryznar stability index(RSI),Puckorius scaling index(PSI)and Larson-Skold index(LS),indicated that most ground-water presents corrosion potential and has corrosion behavior tendency of metals to some *** water quality of Polonnaruwa was better than that of Anuradhapura in the NCP,and when the groundwater was worse than the“good”grade,which must be properly treated before it is used as drinking water.

Experimental Investigations and Theoretical Modeling Aspects in Column Studies for Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solutions Using Activated Tamarind Seeds

Continuous adsorption experiments are conducted using fixed-bed adsorption column to evaluate the performance of the adsorbent developed (from activated tamarind seeds) for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions and the results obtained are validated with a model developed in this study. The effects of significant parameters such as flow rate, mass of adsorbent, and initial Cr(VI) concentration are studied and breakthrough curves are obtained. As the flow rate increases from 10 to 20 mL min-1, the breakthrough time decreases from 210 to 80 min. As the mass of adsorbent increases, breakthrough time gets delayed. The breakthrough times are obtained as 110, 115 and 210 min for 15, 20 and 25 g of activated tamarind seeds. As the initial Cr(VI) concentration increases from 100 to 200 mgL-1, the break point time decreases from 210 to 45 min. The process parameters for fixed-bed adsorption such as breakthrough time, total percentage removal of Cr(VI), adsorption exhaustion rate and fraction of unused bed length are calculated and the performance of fixed-bed adsorption column is analyzed. The mechanism for Cr(VI) adsorption on activated tamarind seeds is proposed. At low value of solution pH (= 1), the increase in Cr(VI) adsorption is due to the electrostatic attraction between positively charged groups of activated tamarind seeds and the HCrO4-. A mathematical model for fixed-bed adsorption column is proposed by incorporating the effect of velocity variation along the bed length in the existing model. Pore and surface diffusion models are used to describe the intra-particle mechanism for Cr(VI) adsorption. The breakthrough curve obtained theoretically from pore diffusion model and surface diffusion model are compared with experimental results for different operating conditions. The standard deviation values obtained for pore diffusion model and solid diffusion model are 0.111 and 0.214 respectively.

Phosphorus Starvation Tolerance in Rice Through Combined Physiological,biochemical,and Proteome Analyses

Phosphorus(P) deficiency limits the growth,development,and productivity of *** better understand the underlying mechanisms in P-deficiency tolerance and the role of Pup1 QTL in enhancing P use efficiency(PUE) for the development of P-efficient rice cultivars,a pair of contrasting rice genotypes(Pusa-44 and NIL-23) was applied to investigate the morpho-physio-biochemical and proteomic variation under P-starvation *** rice genotypes were grown hydroponically in a PusaRich medium with adequate P(16 mg/kg,+P) or without P(0 mg/kg,-P) for 30 d.P-starvation manifested a significant reductions in root and shoot biomass,shoot length,leaf area,total chlorophyll,and P,nitrogen and starch contents,as well as protein kinase *** stress increased root-to-shoot biomass ratio,root length,sucrose content,and acid phosphatase activity,particularly in the P-tolerant genotype(NIL-23).Comparative proteome analysis revealed several P metabolism-associated proteins(including OsCDPKs,OsMAPKs,OsCPKs,OsLecRK2,and OsSAPks) to be expressed in the shoot of NIL-23,indicating that multiple protein kinases were involved in P-starvation/deficiency ***,the up-regulated expression of OsrbcL,OsAbCG32,OsSUS5,OsPoll-like b,and ClpC2 proteins in the shoot,and OsACA9,OsACA8,OsSPS2F,OsPP2C15,and OsbiP3 in the root of NIL-23,indicated their role in P-starvation stress control through the Pup1 QTL. Thus,our findings indicated that-P stress-responsive proteins,in conjunction with morpho-physio-biochemical modulations,improved PUE and made NIL-23 a P-deficiency tolerant genotype due to the introgression of the Pup1 QTL in the Pusa-44 background.

Investigating the surface integrity of aluminium based composites machined by EDM

In the present work, the surface characteristics of Electrical Discharge Machined (EDM) Al (6351)eSiC and Al (6351)eSiCeb4C composites are investigated. The composites are prepared by employing the conventional stir casting technique, as it can produce better particle dispersion in the matrix. The detailed experimental study is performed on the composites by varying current (I), duty factor (t), pulse on time (Ton), and the gap voltage (V) in order to analyze the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) formed in the sub surface and the average crater diameter formed on the machined surface of the composites as an output function. The formation of recast layers, presence of bubbles and the surface texture of the composites at various machining conditions are observed. The results show that the increased Metal Removal Rate (MRR) increases the depth of HAZ and the average crater diameter on the machined area. Further, the addition of b4C particles to the composite produces more surface defect than the AleSiC composite.

A Recyclable and Highly Effective ZnO-beta Zeolite as a Catalyst for One-pot Three-Component Synthesis of Tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans

4H-benzo[b]pyrans was synthesized under reflux condition in ethanol via condensation of benzaldehyde, malononitrile and dimedone with ZnO-beta zeolite as an inexpensive and effective catalyst. The key features of the reported protocols are good to excellent yields, short reaction time and recovery and reusability of catalytic material.

Pesticidal Impact on the Protein Metabolism of Freshwater Field Crab, Oziotelphusa Senex Senex(Fabricius)

The total protein increased in the gills and decreased in the muscle of the freshwater field crab Oziotelphusa senex senex at days 1 and 2 on exposure to lethal concentrations and at days 1 and 10 to sublethal concentrations of furadan, endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, and a mixture of these three in a 100:10: 1 ratio. The increase in the gill protein was greater on exposure to the sublethal concentrations than to the lethal concentrations while the decrease in the muscle protein was greater on exposure to the lethal concentrations than to the sublethal concentrations. In the hepatopancreas, the protein content decreased on exposure to the lethal concentrations, but, in contrast, increased on exposure to the sublethal concentrations. These results clearly indicate that changes in the protein content are not only organ-dependent but also concentration-dependent, i.e., lethal versus sublethal. Irrespective of the changes in the total protein, the levels of free amino acids and the activities of protease, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, and glutamate dehydrogenase increased in all the three organs of the crabs exposed to the lethal and sublethal concentrations, (more in lethal than in sublethal) and increased at a greater rate over time of exposure. Ammonia toxicity, measured by an increase in the hemolymph ammonia and a decrease in the urea, was also observed at the lethal concentrations of all the three pesticides. The ammonia and urea levels increased in the crabs exposed to the sublethal concentrations. Although the effect of each pesticide on the protein metabolism was similar, the degree of toxicity was the lowest on exposure to furadan, intermediate on exposure to endosulfan and chlorpyrifos, and cumulative on exposure to a mixture of the three pesticides
