Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types, essentially with- out limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive, offering immense hope of curing Alzheimer＇s disease, repairing damaged spinal cords, treating kidney, liver and lung diseases and making damaged hearts whole. Until recently, scientists primarily worked with two kinds of stem cells from animals and humans： embryonic stem cells and non-embryonic ＂somatic＂ or ＂adult＂ stem cells. Recent breakthrough make it possible to convert or ＂reprogram＂ specialized adult cells to assume a stem stem-like cells with different technologies. The review will briefly dis- cuss the recent progresses in this area.

To the Editor: Acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO) is a catastrophic variant of stroke, which accounts for about 1% of all strokes.[1] Though rare, BAOs are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates.[2] Although treatable, the rate of death or disability associated with BAO is still as high as 80%.[2] Early recanalization either with thrombolysis or intravascular thrombectomy was shown to significantly improve the outcome of patients with BAO.

Objective:To explore the effects of histone deacetylase 6(HDAC-6) on the PD cell model induced by proteasome inhibitor lactacystin.Methods:Human neuroblastoma SK-N-SH cells were cultured.The wild type pcDNA3.1-alpha-synuclein eukaryotic expression plasmid was transferred into the cells which then were divided into control group,group L,group T and group T+L.The eells of group L were added with 5 umol/L lactacystin dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) to induce PD cell model with abnormal protein aggregation,the cells of control group were treated with 5 umol/L DMSO,the cells of group T were treated with 5 umol/L selective HDAC-6 inhibitor tubacin dissolved in DMSO,and the cells of group T+L were treated with 5 umol/L lactaeystin and 10 umol/L tubacin dissolved in DMSO.The expression levels of alpha-synuclein oligomers,HSP-27 and HSP-70 were detected by Western blot and the cell survival rate of all the groups was detected by MTT colorimetric assay,and compared 24 h after the cells were treated.Results:The expression levels of alpha-synuclein oligomers,HSP-27 and HSP-70 of the cells of group L were significantly higher than the control group,and the cell survival rate was significantly lower(Psurvival rate(Psurvival rate of the cells of group T and the control group were not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusions:The expression level of alphasynuclein oligomers can be improved and the cell survival rate can be reduced by the PD cell model induced by lactacystin and treated with selective HDAC-6 inhibitor tubacin,which means that alpha-synuclein oligomers of the PD cell model induced by lactacystin can be inhibited and the cell survival rate can be improved by HDAC-6,and the mechanism may be rela

Background： Renal function is associated with mortality and functional disabilities in stroke patients, and impaired autonomic function is common in stroke, but little is known regarding its effects on stroke patients with renal dysfunction. This study sought to evaluate the association between autonomic function and stroke in patients with renal dysfunction. Methods： This study comprised 232 patients with acute ischemic stroke consecutively enrolled from February 2013 to November 2014 at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine in China. All patients recruited underwent laboratory evaluation and 24 h Holter electrocardiography （ECG）. Autonomic function was measured based on the heart rate variability （HRV） using 24 h Holter ECG. Renal damage was assessed through the estimated glomerular filtration rate （eGFR）, and stroke severity was rated according to the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale （NIHSS）. The Barthel index and modifed Rankin score were also determined following admission. All the clinical covariates that could potentially affect autonomic outcome variables were adjusted with linear regression. Results： In the patients with a mild or moderate decreased eGFR, the values for the standard deviation of the averaged normal-to-normal RR interval （SDANN） index （P = 0.022L very low frequency （VLF）（P = 0.043）, low frequency （LF）（P= 0.023）, and ratio of low-to-high frequency power （LF/HF）（P = 0.001 ） were significantly lower than those in the patients with a normal eGFR. A lnultinomial linear regression indicated that eGFR （t - 2.47, P - 0.014）, gender （t - -3.60, P 〈0.001）, and a history of hypertension （t = -2.65, P = 0.008） were the risk factors of LF/HF; the NIHSS score （SDANN index： t = -3.83, P 〈 0.001 ; VLF： t = -3.07, P = 0.002： LF： t = -2.79, P = 0.006） and a history of diabetes （SDANN index： t = -3.58, P 〈 0.001; VLF： t = -2.54, P = 0.012; LF： t = -2.87, P = 0.004） were independent factors Ibr the SDANN index, VLF, and LF; the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project （t = -2.38, P = 0.0

Major ozonated autohemotherapy has been shown to promote recovery of upper limb motor function in patients with acute cerebral infarction, but whether naajor ozonated autohelnotherapy affects remote in）ury remains poorly understood. Here, we assumed that major ozonated autohemotherapy contributes to recovery of clinical function, possibly by reducing remote injury after acute cerebral infarction. Sixty acute cerebral infarction patients aged 30-80 years were equally and randomly allocated to ozone treatment and control groups. Patients in the ozone treatment group received medical treatment and major ozonated autohemotherapy （47 mg/L, 100 mL ozone） for 10 ± 2 days. Patients in the control group received medical treatment only. National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, modified Rankin scale score, and reduced degree of fractional anisotropy values of brain magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging were remarkably decreased, brain function improved, clinical efficiency significantly increased, and no obvious adverse reactions detected in the ozone treatment group compared with the control group. These findings suggest that major ozonated autohemotherapy promotes recovery of neurological function in acute cerebral infarction patients by reducing re,note injury, and additionally, exhibits high safety.

The constant panel method within the framework of potential flow theory in the time domain is developed for solving the hydrodynamic interactions between two parallel ships with forward speed.When solving problems within a time domain framework,the free water surface needs to simultaneously satisfy both the kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions of the free water surface.This provides conditions for adding artificial damping layers.Using the Runge−Kutta method to solve equations related to time.An upwind differential scheme is used in the present method to deal with the convection terms on the free surface to prevent waves upstream.Through the comparison with the available experimental data and other numerical methods,the present method is proved to have good mesh convergence,and satisfactory results can be obtained.The constant panel method is applied to calculate the hydrodynamic interaction responses of two parallel ships advancing in head waves.Numerical simulations are conducted on the effects of forward speed,different longitudinal and lateral distances on the motion response of two modified Wigley ships in head waves.Then further investigations are conducted on the effects of different ship types on the motion response.

Atherosclerosis(AS)is characterized by impairment and apoptosis of endothelial cells,continuous systemic and focal inflammation and dysfunction of vascular smooth muscle cells,which is documented as the traditional cellular paradigm.However,the mechanisms appear much more complicated than we thought since a bulk of studies on efferocytosis,transdifferentiation and novel cell death forms such as ferroptosis,pyroptosis,and extracellular trap were reported.Discovery of novel pathological cellular landscapes provides a large number of therapeutic targets.On the other side,the unsatisfactory therapeutic effects of current treatment with lipid-lowering drugs as the cornerstone also restricts the efforts to reduce global AS burden.Stem cell-or nanoparticle-based strategies spurred a lot of attention due to the attractive therapeutic effects and minimized adverse effects.Given the complexity of pathological changes of AS,attempts to develop an almighty medicine based on single mechanisms could be theoretically challenging.In this review,the top stories in the cellular landscapes during the initiation and progression of AS and the therapies were summarized in an integrated perspective to facilitate efforts to develop a multi-targets strategy and fill the gap between mechanism research and clinical translation.The future challenges and improvements were also discussed.

Experimental Investigation of the Operating Characteristics of a Pulsating Heat Pipe with Ultra-Pure Water and Micro Encapsulated Phase Change Material suspension

The specific heat capacity of working fluid is an important influence factor on heat transfer characteristic of the pulsating heat pipe(PHP).Due to the relatively large specific heat capacity of micro encapsulated phase change material(MEPCM) suspension,a heat transfer performance experimental facility of the PHP was established.The heat transfer characteristic with MEPCM suspension of different mass concentrations(0.5% and 1.0%) and ultra-pure water were compared experimentally.It was found that when the PHP uses MEPCM suspension as its working fluid,operating stability is impoverished under lower heating power and the operating stability is better under higher heating power.At the inclination angle of 90°,the temperature at heating side decreases compared to ultra-pure water and the temperature at heating side decreases with the raising of MEPCM suspension mass concentration.The heat transfer characteristic of the PHP is positively correlated with the inclination angle and the 90° is optimum.The unfavorable effect of the inclination angle decreases with heating power increasing.When the inclination angle is 90°,the PHP with MEPCM suspension at 1.0% of mass concentration has the lowest thermal transfer resistance and followed by ultra-pure water and MEPCM suspension at 0.5% of mass concentration has the highest thermal transfer resistance.When the inclination angles are 60° and30°,the effect of gravity on the flow direction is reduced to 86.6% and 50% of that on the inclination angle of 90°,respectively,and the promoting effect of gravity on the working fluid is further weakened as the inclination angle further decreases.Due to the high viscosity of MEPCM suspension,the PHP with ultra-pure water has the lowest heat transfer resistance.When the inclination angles is 60°,the thermal resistance with MEPCM suspension at0.5% of the mass concentration is lower than that at 1.0% at the heating power below 230 W.The thermal resistance of MEPCM suspension tends to be similar for heating power of 230-250 W.At the heating

BACKGROUND Oncostatin M(OSM)is a pleiotropic cytokine which is implicated in the path-ogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).AIM To evaluate the prognostic role of OSM in IBD patients.METHODS Literature search was conducted in electronic databases(Google Scholar,Embase,PubMed,Science Direct,Springer,and Wiley).Studies were selected if they reported prognostic information about OSM in IBD patients.Outcome data were synthesized,and meta-analyses were performed to estimate standardized mean differences(SMDs)in OSM levels between treatment responders and non-res-ponders and to seek overall correlations of OSM with other inflammatory bio-markers.REsuLTS Sixteen studies(818 Crohn’s disease and 686 ulcerative colitis patients treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor-based therapies)were included.OSM levels were associated with IBD severity.A meta-analysis found significantly higher OSM levels in non-responders than in responders to therapy[SMD 0.80(0.33,1.27);P=0.001],in non-remitters than in remitters[SMD 0.75(95%CI:0.35 to 1.16);P<0.0001]and in patients with no mucosal healing than in those with mucosal heal-ing[SMD 0.63(0.30,0.95);P<0.0001].Area under receiver operator curve values showed considerable variability between studies but in general higher OSM levels were associated with poor prognosis.OSM had significant correlations with Simple Endoscopic Score of Crohn’s disease[r=0.47(95%CI:0.25 to 0.64);P<0.0001],Mayo Endoscopic Score[r=0.35(95%CI:0.28 to 0.41);P<0.0001],fecal calprotectin[r=0.19(95%CI:0.08 to 0.3);P=0.001],C-reactive protein[r=0.25(95%CI:0.11 to 0.39);P<0.0001],and platelet count[r=0.28(95%CI:0.17 to 0.39);P<0.0001].CONCLUSION OSM is a potential candidate for determining the severity of disease and predicting the outcomes of anti-tumor necrosis factor-based therapies in IBD patients.
