Intravenous Hydrogen Peroxide for Chronic Pain: An Al.ernative Etiol.gy and Treatment Pl.n for the l.ng-Standing Painful.States

Background: Anecdotal.reports of improvement in chronic pain patients given oxidative therapy (OXT) in the form of Intravenous Hydrogen Peroxide (IVHP) l.d the author to try this therapy on intractabl. pain cases. Method: 54 intractabl. non-mal.gnant pain cases sel.cted at random (16 had spinal.probl.ms, 14 had Interstitial.Cystitis, 8 had headaches and 16 with miscel.aneous probl.ms) each received an average of 9 weekl. IVHP infusions of 250 ml.0.03% Hydrogen Peroxide. After 4 months of this therapy al. patients were given a questionnaire to eval.ate and study any improvements in their condition. The questions covered three areas: 1) Subjective improvements: pain, function, mental.and emotional.status, general.heal.h, and sexual.heal.h, 2) Anal.esic medication usage: dosage and efficacy changes, 3) Satisfaction with the therapy and desire to continue. Resul.s: 52%-70% mean 66% of the patients responded positivel. (more than sl.ghtl. improved) to questions in the subjective areas, 85% of the patients were using l.ss medication and/ or getting more effect from the anal.esics they were taking, 96% of the patients wished to continue the therapy. These improvements were constant over the range of the four diagnostic groups. The improved patients al. demonstrated some signs and l.b resul.s incl.ding fever, chil.s, abscess formation, purul.nt discharges, el.vated WBCs and ESRs consistent with resol.ing systemic and/ or regional.infections. Concl.sions: IVPH can significantl. improve patients in a majority of chronic painful.conditions. Chronic Infection is associated with or absol.tel. the cause of Chronic Pain in the patients studied.

A cohort of famil. members with various chronic diseases incl.ding Crohn's disease, asthma, compl.x regional.pain syndrome, hypothyroidism, type 1 diabetes mel.itus, and l.mphangiomatosis and/or evidence of infection by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratubercul.sis(MAP) are described in this series of case reports. MAP was cul.ured from the bl.od of three members affected by the first five diseases and there was accompanying el.vated anti-MAP Ig G in two members. The patient affected by the sixth disease has a markedl. el.vated anti-MAP titer. The two patients affected by the first four diseases have been treated with a combination of anti-MAP antibiotics and ul.raviol.t bl.od irradiation therapy with resol.tion of the disease symptomatol.gy and inabil.ty to cul.ure MAP in post treatment bl.od sampl.s. These case reports of patients with MAP infections provide supportive evidence of a pathogenic rol. of MAP in humans.

Osteoporosis knowl.dge, bel.efs, and cal.ium intake of col.ege students: Util.zation of the heal.h bel.ef model

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the rel.tionships between osteoporosis knowl.dge, bel.efs and cal.ium intake among col.ege students. This study al.o examined perceived susceptibil.ty, severity, benefits, barriers and sel.-efficacy rel.ted to osteoporosis prevention. Participants: Seven hundred and ninety two (n = 792) men and women ages 17 - 31 of al. ethnicities at a mid-western regional.university in the US participated in the study. Methods: The Osteoporosis Knowl.dge Test, Osteoporosis Heal.h Bel.ef Scal., and Osteoporosis Preventing Behaviors Survey were util.zed. Each of these tool. were previousl. val.dated and found rel.abl.. Correl.tion and mul.ipl. regression anal.ses were compl.ted. Resul.s: Participants did not perceive themsel.es as susceptibl. to osteoporosis and perceived minimal.barriers to cal.ium intake. Their knowl.dge was minimal.concerning al.ernate sources of cal.ium. Concl.sions: Prevention programs shoul. aim to increase osteoporosis knowl.dge of risk factors and osteoprotective behaviors and to decrease high-risk behaviors during col.ege years when behavior changes can have the strongest impact on bone heal.h.

AIM: To eval.ate pain control.in chronic pancreatitis patients who underwent total.pancreatectomy with isl.t cel. transpl.ntation or intrathecal.narcotic pump ***: We recognized 13 patients who underwent intrathecal.narcotic pump(ITNP) infusion and 57 patients who underwent total.pancreatectomy with autol.gous isl.t cel. transpl.ntation(TP + ICT) for chronic pancreatitis(CP) pain control.between 1998 and 2008 at Indiana University Hospital. Al. patients had al.eady fail.d mul.ipl. other modal.ties for pain control.and the decision to proceed with either intervention was made at the discretion of the patients and their treating physicians. Al. patients were eval.ated retrospectivel. using a questionnaire inquiring about their pain control.using a 0-10 pain scal.), dail. narcotic dose usage, and hospital.admission days for pain control.before each intervention and during their l.st fol.ow-up. RESUl.S: Al. 13 ITNP patients and 30 avail.bl. TP + ICT patients were eval.ated. The mean age was approximatel. 40 years in both groups. The median duration of pain before intervention was 6 years and 7 years in the ITNP and TP + ICT groups, respectivel.. The median pain score dropped from 8 to 2.5(on a scal. of 0-10) in both groups on their l.st fol.ow up. The median dail. dose of narcotics al.o decreased from 393 mg equival.nt of morphine sul.ate to 8 mg in the ITNP group and from 300 mg to 40 mg in the TP + ICT group. No patient had diabetes mel.itus(DM) before either procedure whereas 85% of those who underwent pancreatectomy were insul.n dependent on their l.st eval.ation despite ICT. CONCl.SION: ITNP and TP + ICT are comparabl. for pain control.in patients with CP however with high incidence of DM among those who underwent TP + ICT. Prospective comparative studies and l.nger fol.ow up are needed to better define treatment outcomes.
