Development of microalloyed steels for high temperature carburizing

The potential for use of microalloy additions to suppress abnormal austenite grain growth and produce steels with enhanced bending fatigue resistance after high temperature vacuum carburizing was investigated in a series of Ti-modified SAE 8620 steels with w(niobium) additions up to 0.1%.Results are considered from a series of papers at the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center on the effects of Nb content,heating rate, rolling history,and processing temperature on the evolution of austenite grain structures in carburizing steels. Emphasis is placed on understanding the effects of alloying and processing on each stage in the annealing process including the as received laboratory rolled conditions,during the onset of carburizing after annealing at different heating rates,and after annealing for various times at carburizing temperatures up to 1 100℃.Heating rate to the carburizing temperature was shown to be an influential variable and suppression of abnormal grain growth was dependent on the development of a critical distribution of fine NbC precipitates,stable at the austenitizing *** importance to industrial carburizing practice of heating rate effects on precipitates and austenite grain size evolution are discussed and correlated to selected data on fatigue performance.

The incorporation of therapeutic-capable ions into bioactive glasses(BGs),either based on silica(SBGs)or phosphate(PBGs),is currently envisaged as a proficient path for facilitating bone *** with this view,the single and complementary structural and bio-functional roles of CuO andGa_(2)O_(3)(in the 2e5 mol%range)were assessed,by deriving a series of SBG and PBG formulations startingfrom the parent glass systems,FastOs®BG e 38.5SiO2d36.1CaOd5.6P2O5d19.2MgOd0.6CaF2,and50.0P2O5d35.0CaOd10.0Na_(2)Od5.0 Fe2O_(3)(mol%),respectively,using the process of *** inter-linked physico-chemistry e biological response of BGs was assessed in search of bio-functional *** light was shed on the structural role e as network former or modifier e ofCu and Ga,immersed in SBG and PBG *** preliminary biological performance was surveyedin vitro by quantification of Cu and Ga ion release under homeostatic conditions,cytocompatibility assays(in fibroblast cell cultures)and antibacterial tests(against Staphylococcus aureus).The similar(Cu)anddissimilar(Ga)structural roles in the SBG and PBG vitreous networks governed their ***,Cuions were leached in similar concentrations(ranging from 10e35 ppm and 50e110 ppm at BG doses of 5and 50 mg/mL,respectively)for both type of BGs,while the release of Ga ions was 1e2 orders ofmagnitude lower in the case of SBGs(i.e.,0.2e6 ppm)compared to PBGs(i.e.,9e135 ppm).This wasattributed to the network modifier role of Cu in both types of BGs,and conversely,to the network former(SBGs)and network modifier(PBGs)roles of *** glasses were cytocompatible at a dose of 5 mg/mL,while at the same concentration the antimicrobial efficiency was found to be accentuated by the coupledrelease of Cu and Ga ions from *** collective assessment,the most prominent candidate material forthe further development of implant coatings and bone graft substitutes was delineated as the38.5SiO2d34.1CaOd5.6P2O5d16.2MgOd

Implantable deep brain stimulation(DBS)systems are utilized for clinical treatment of diseases such as Parkinson's disease and chronic ***,long-term efficacy of DBS is limited,and chronic neuroplastic changes and associated therapeutic mechanisms are not well *** and mechanistic investigation,typically accomplished in small animal models,is difficult because of the need for chronic stimulators that currently require either frequent handling of test subjects to charge battery-powered systems or specialized setups to manage tethers that restrict experimental paradigms and compromise *** overcome these challenges,we demonstrate a fully implantable,wireless,battery-free platform that allows for chronic DBS in rodents with the capability to control stimulation parameters digitally in real *** devices are able to provide stimulation over a wide range of frequencies with biphasic pulses and constant voltage control via low-impedance,surface-engineered platinum *** devices utilize off-the-shelf components and feature the ability to customize electrodes to enable broad utility and rapid *** of the system is demonstrated with a readout of stimulation-evoked neural activity in vivo and chronic stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle in freely moving rats to evoke characteristic head motion for over 36 days.

Background：Pediatric emergency rooms （PERs） in Chinese hospitals are perpetually full of sick and injured children because of the lack of sufficiently developed community hospitals and low access to family *** aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of a new five-level Chinese pediatric emergency triage system （CPETS）,modeled after the Canadian Triage System and Acuity ***：In this study,we compared CPETS outcomes in our PER relative to those of the prior two-level *** who visited our PER before （January 2013-June 2013） and after （January 2014-June 2014） the CPETS was implemented served as the control and experimental group,*** flow,triage rates,triage accuracy,wait times （overall and for severe patients）,and patient/family satisfaction were compared between the two ***：Relative to the performance of the former system experienced by the control group,the CPETS experienced by the experimental group was associated with a reduced patient flow through the PER （Cox-stuart test,t =0,P 〈 0.05）,a higher triage rate （93.40% vs.90.75%;χ^2 =801.546,P 〈 0.001）,better triage accuracy （96.32% vs.85.09%;χ^2 =710.904,P 〈 0.001）,shorter overall wait times （37.30 ± 13.80 min vs.41.60 ± 15.40 min;t =11.27,P 〈 0.001）,markedly shorter wait times for severe patients （2.07 [0.65,4.11] min vs.3.23 [1.90,4.36] min;z =-2.057,P =0.040）,and higher family satisfaction rates （94.23% vs.92.21%;x2 =321.528,P 〈 0.001）.Conclusions：Implementing the CPETS improved nurses＇ abilities to triage severe patients and,thus,to deliver the urgent treatments more *** system shunted nonurgent patients to outpatient care effectively,resulting in improved efficiency of PER health-care delivery.

Trade-off between microbial carbon use efficiency and specific nutrient-acquiring extracellular enzyme activities under reduced oxygen

Mangroves are one of the most ecologically sensitive ecosystems to global climate change,which have cascading impacts on soil carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)***,mangroves are experiencing increasing N and P loadings and reduced oxygen availability due to intensified climate change and human ***,both direct and interactive effects of these perturbations on microbially mediated soil C,N and P cycling are poorly ***,we simultaneously investigated the effects of N and P loadings and reduced oxygen on microbial biomass,microbial respiration,and extracellular enzyme activities(EEAs)in mangrove *** calculated the microbial metabolic quotient(qCO_(2)),which is regarded as a useful inverse metric of microbial C use efficiency(CUE).Our results show that reduced oxygen significantly increases both qCO_(2) and microbial specific EEAs(enzyme activity per unit of microbial biomass)for C-,N-and P-acquisition regardless of N or P ***,we found that qCO_(2) positively correlated with microbial specific EEAs under reduced oxygen,whereas no clear relationship was detected under ambient *** results suggest that reduced oxygen increases microbial specific EEAs at the expense of increasing microbial respiration per unit biomass,indicating higher energy cost per unit enzyme production.
