The separation of phases after the stability composition at a plait point is exceeded has significant effect on the reactions during spontaneous emulsification, but experimental efforts to obtain accurate information are extremely difficult, because even the smallest scattering of the numbers has a large effect on the result. In the present contribution a model system was applied that closely mirrored experimental values and the mass ratio of the two phases could be calculated with high accuracy. extrapolation of the ratio between phase masses towards the critical composition showed the two phase masses each close to 0.5, while a composition with a miniscule difference from this composition extrapolated to 1.0. The results showed spontaneous emulsification between solutions at the plait point and water to consist of two processes;an initial extremely fast reaction and a slower process between the aqueous phase formed in the primary emulsification and water.

Wood frame wails typically need a vapour barrier at the warm side to avoid interstitial condensation due to vapour diffusion and air leakages from the interior. A more vapour open material than the traditional vapour barriers, here calted vapour retarder, could allow condensed moisture, buiLt-in-moisture or moisture from minor leakages to dry to the interior in addition to the outward drying. The application of permeable vapour retarders in wood frame wails have been investigated in this study by the use of a hygrothermat simulation tool. A traditional wood frame wail usually has good drying possibilities to the exterior. If a vapour retarder should have an effect on the total drying, it must not be too vapour tight. The purpose of this study was to find some threshold value for the maximum vapour resistance of a vapour retarder--when a requirement is that it should have a relatively large effect of the total drying of the wail. The increased risk for condensation as the vapour resistance decreases has however not been investigated in this study. In general it was found that permeable vapour barriers have retatively littte effect on the total drying of ordinary wood frame waits in a Nordic ctimate.

electromembrane extraction(eMe) is an analytical microextraction technique, where charged analytes(such as drug substances) are extracted from an aqueous sample(such as a biological fluid), through a supported liquid membrane(SLM) comprising a water immiscible organic solvent, and into an aqueous acceptor solution. The driving force for the extraction is an electrical potential(dc) applied across the SLM. In this paper, eMe is reviewed. First, the principle for eMe is explained with focus on extraction of cationic and anionic analytes, and typical performance data are presented. Second, papers published in 2016 are reviewed and discussed with focus on(a) new SLMs,(b) new support materials for the SLM,(c) new sample additives improving extraction,(d) new technical configurations,(e) improved theoretical understanding, and(f) pharmaceutical new applications. Finally, important future research objectives and directions are defined for further development of eMe, with the aim of establishing eMe in the toolbox of future analytical laboratories.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection is a disease with a highly variable course. Chronic HBV infection may cause end-stage liver disease including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which is the 3rd most common cause of cancer related death due to the poor prognosis. The prevalence of HBV infection is low in many countries. Still, it remains important due to the potential consequences of the disease. HBV is endemic in the Arctic with serologic markers of chronic HBV infection in up to 29% of the population in some areas in Greenland. Interestingly, Inuit populations rarely show signs of liver disease despite the fact that around half of all Inuit has been exposed to HBV and around 8% of Inuit are chronically infected with HBV. These findings have been consistent in surveys conducted for more than four decades among Arctic Inuit. We thus review HBV infection in the Arctic with focus on Greenland Inuit and compared with Inuit in Canada, Alaska and Siberia. The aspects described include epidemiology and monitoring of the disease, as well as treatment and the risk of liver cancer.

The question of wastewater treatment and control is reflected from a very specific viewpoint: the low priority given to accurate and useful measurements within wastewater treatment. The matter is discussed from four various perspectives, that may be labelled “Legal understanding”;“Needs for accurate measurement results already in the planning and design stage”;“The measurement problem and human behaviour”;“The understanding of the short term and long term dynamics and changes in pollution and flow loads on a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP)”. All these aspects bring about much improved needs for an accurate and frequent measurement scheme both for pollutants and flows entering a WWTP. The conclusion is stated as follows: A far more and well elaborated on-line measurement system at the plants would become a needed tool for improved water environment protection at lower costs.

Radio-isotopic analysis of single zircons from two early Telychian K-bentonites, one of which is among the most widespread Lower Paleozoic volcanic ash falls in north- ern europe, yields overlapping weighted mean 206pb/238U ages of 438. 7± 1.0 Ma and 437.8 ± 0.5 Ma, respectively. The former age is from zircons of the Osmundsberg K-bentonite from the type locality at Osmundsberget in the Siljan area of central Sweden where it occurs in the lower part of the Spirograptus tur- riculatus Graptolite Zone and in the lower part of the Angochitina longicollis Chitinozoan Zone. Zircons giv- ing the latter age are from a bed previously identified as the Osmundsberg K-bentonite at the Kallholn Quarry in the same area. Based on new biostratigraphic data, the latter bed is now considered to be slightly younger than the Osmundsberg K-bentonite. The dated stratigraphic level of the ash layers is slightly younger than the base of the Telychian Stage and thus represents a minimum age for the Aeronian/Telychian Stage boundary. A U-Pb age of 〉 438 Ma for the base of this stage, however, is older and in conflict with estimates in the most recent compilation of the Silurian time scale. In view of the fact that only three radio-isotopic dates from the entire Llan- dovery have been previously accepted, this new and biostratigraphically exceptionally well-controlled radio-isotopic date fills an important gap in the Lower Silurian geochronology.

The sanitation and environmental problems related to human activities can be traced at least around 2 500 years back, with written evidences both in the Old Testimony and the Greek culture. Thus in this perspective the matter is by convention an acknowledged problem since long. On the other hand our modern treatment systems of wastewater have far more recent roots. As an example, this year the very widespread biological treatment based on activated sludge celebrates it 100 year anniversary. In this perspective we may see a fundamental need to discuss and scrutinize the current systems in a “sustainable” perspective. A challenge for the technical society is to provide some “quantified” criteria on the concept sustainability. The wastewater treatment systems as we know them and develop them may be addressed by applying four major “sustainability” criteria: 1) The sustainability from major sanitation viewpoints;2) The sustainability from environmental viewpoints;3) The financial sustainability for the technical systems;(4) The sustainability with respect to adopting the systems into a more or less consistently changing society.
