The Effects of Zinc Sulfate on the in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in Cervids

The captive white-tailed deer industry has an estim.ted im.act of 1.6 billion USD in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirem.nts for cervids are determ.ned through research based on sheep and goats. The objective of this study was to determ.ne the effects of zinc on differences in dry m.tter digestibility in vitro for white-tailed does (Odocoileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were ethically harvested, rum.ns were collected, and placed into a cooler containing warm.water. Rum.n contents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using cheese cloth while applying CO2. Fluid was placed into four separate incubator jars with filter bags containing a 1:1 alfalfa to coastal hay blend. Zinc doses of 0.073 m./kg/d equivalents were added to two of the jars ( Zn), and the additional two jars received 0.00 m./kg/d (CON). Following 48 h of incubation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) showed no significant differences between the control and the treatm.nt groups. Average dry m.tter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respectively. There were no differences detected in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or Om.between the treatm.nt groups. While no detectable differences were observed in this study, this m.thodology did prove to be viable and functional for m.crobial digestion in vitro. This study can be replicated with m.ltiple experim.ntal units to confirm.the observations of increased digestibility. Form.l nutritional guidelines can be created to allow for m.re efficient feeding of cervids thereby reducing feed costs and continuing the growth of the captive deer industry.

Swim.ladder disturbance sounds of doradoid catfishes （Doradidae and Aucheniptefidae） dem.nstrated striking waveform.and spectrographic variation. We surveyed sounds of 25 doradoid species in 20 genera com.aring these to sounds of four vocal outgroup catfish fam.lies. Sounds were either continuous waveform. （lacking interpulses） or pulsed （groups of pulses repeated at fixed tem.oral intervals）. This is the first evidence for swim.ladder calls with fixed interpulse patterns in catfishes. Vocal m.chanism.com.onents that were sim.lar between doradids and auchenipterids included： swim.ladder shape, swim.ladder dim.nsions and sonic m.scle-som.tic index. m.rphological traits that showed variation am.ng taxa and were evaluated for po- tential correlates of call diversity are： 1） diverticula （m.rginal outpocketings of the swim.ladder with no connection to inner ear） and 2） elastic spring apparatus m.illerian ram. （ESA-m.）. Within the doradid subfam.lies and within the Auchenipteridae m.st species differed significantly in dom.nant frequency with frequency ranges overlapping to som. extent for m.st. Doradid swim. bladder diverticula did not explain dom.nant frequency variation within the doradoid superfam.ly. Som. doradids with conical ESA-m. had the highest dom.nant frequency sounds. Auchenipterids included both relatively lower and higher dom.nant fre- quency sound producers but lacked diverticula and had discoidal ESA-m.. Com.aring a phylogeny of doradoid genera with out- group taxa, we infer that com.lex diverticula and conical ESA-m. are derived characters within the Doradidae. Species repre- senting outgroup fam.lies produced either continuous lower dom.nant frequency sounds （aspredinids, m.chokids and pseudopim.lodids） or pulsed higher dom.nant frequency sounds （pim.lodids） [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 171-188, 2012].

PURPOSE: We describe a new technique that endoscopically eradicates rectal stum. m.cosa after total colectom. for ulcerative colitis. m.THODS: Seven patients (5 m.les; m.dian age, 56 (range, 36- 72) years) underwent attem.ted endoscopic transanal rectal m.cosal ablation using the 28- French-gauge urologic resectoscope, either at the tim. of total colectom. and ileostom. for failed m.dical therapy (5 patients) or as an alternative to com.letion pro-ctectom. (2 patients) with rectal stum. discharge. All had declined restorative proctocolectom.. Clinical, endoscopic, and histologic follow-up was undertaken during a m.an of 15 (range, 3- 28) m.nths. RESULTS: The operative technique evolved during these cases; m.cosal ablation was successfully perform.d leaving a denuded m.scular rectal tube in situ in six patients. m.an operative tim. was 45 m.nutes. Postoperative endoscopic surveillance has not dem.nstrated any viable rectal m.cosa in these six patients, with only granulation tissue detected histologically. Narrowing of the rectal tube has occurred in two patients. Although all patients report insignificant rectal discharge, urinary and sexual function have rem.ined unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: Diatherm. ablation of the rectal m.cosa via endoscopic transanal rectal m.cosal ablation avoids the com.lications of pelvic dissection and m.ght offer an effective alternative to proctectom. for ulcerative colitis.

Iron is a lim.ting factor for the eutrophication of lakes, especially those lakes that are enriched with phosphorus. Extractability of iron in sedim.nts of West Lake and Taihu Lake in China and Lower Lough Erne in Northern Ireland of UK was com.aratively investigated on the basis of analysing chem.cal form. of iron using different extractants. It was shown that extractable iron in sedim.nts of the lakes was greatly different using various extractants. Reactive iron or easily released iron such as “active" iron oxides, total free iron oxide and water-soluble iron was not high, only accounting for 0.01%—0.15% of total iron. The efficiency of the extractants for exchangeable iron was decreased in the sequence 0.1 m.l/L HCl DTPA+TEA m.xed solution > 1 m.l/L NH 4OAc > 0.5 m.l/L m.Cl 2 = 0.5 m.l/L CaCl 2. It seem. that the com.lexion of iron by organic m.tter was not strong because the concentration of organically bound iron was significantly lower than the concentration it was forecasted. Extractable iron is not entirely consistent with or dependent on total iron in lake sedim.nts. To a certain extent, phosphate can inhibit the release of iron in sedim.nts of the lakes. The selection of extractants is thus the first key step to evaluate bioavailability of iron in lake sedim.nts.

All 17 babies achieved target transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension within 15 m.nutes. Fifteen babies had im.roved ventilation with changes guided by the respiratory function m.nitor. The m.nitor was easy to use and useful.
