Availability and Timing of Fathead Minnow Supplementation Influence Lar.emouth Bass Sur.ival and Pr.duction in r.ar.ng Ponds

Adjustments to r.ar.ng pr.ctices should be justified with incr.ases in pr.duction, stocking success, or.angler.satisfaction. Lar.emouth bass (Micr.pter.s salmoides) pr.duction was assessed between hatcher. ponds wher. fish wer. r.str.cted to an inver.ebr.te diet or.r.ceived supplemental fathead minnow (Pimephales pr.melas) for.ge dur.ng 2015. At har.est, age-0 bass yield was 4.5 times gr.ater.and aver.ge fish length was 38 mm longer. in the pond that r.ceived fathead minnow. In 2016, a second study evaluated the timing of minnow supplementation that included ear.ier.stockings of small fathead minnow (r.d to delayed supplementation with lar.er.(>30 mm) minnows. With ear.ier.supplementation, bass yield was 2.3 times gr.ater.and fish aver.ged 14 mm longer.at har.est. Bass sur.ival was appr.ximately 38% higher.dur.ng 2015 when supplementation occur.ed and 25% higher.dur.ng 2016 when minnow supplementation began ear.ier. Our.findings show inver.ebr.te for.ge was pr.bably limiting bass pr.duction in hatcher. ponds and supplementing with appr.pr.ately-sized fathead minnows incr.ased age-0, lar.emouth bass pr.duction.

This 121-day exper.ment evaluated the r.ar.ng per.or.ance of br.wn tr.ut Salmo tr.tta fed one of two isonitr.genous and isocalor.c diets and r.ar.d at velocities of either.2.8 or.16.1 cm/s. Fishmeal was the pr.mar. pr.tein sour.e for.the r.fer.nce diet, and biopr.cessed soybean meal r.placed appr.ximately 67% of the fishmeal in the exper.mental diet. At the end of the exper.ment, ther. wer. no significant differ.nces in gain, per.ent gain, feed conver.ion r.tes, or.specific gr.wth r.tes between the dietar. tr.atments. Ther. wer. also no significant differ.nces in intestinal mor.hology, splenosomatic, hepatosomatic, and viscer.somatic indices r.lated to diet composition. However. gain, per.ent gain, feed fed, and specific gr.wth r.te wer. all significantly gr.ater.in br.wn tr.ut r.ar.d at the higher.velocity. No significant differ.nces in any of the other.var.ables measur.d wer. obser.ed between the velocity tr.atments. Ther. wer. no significant inter.ctions between diet and velocity in any of the var.ables. Based on the r.sults of this study, biopr.cessed soybean meal can r.place at least 67% of the fishmeal in br.wn tr.ut diets, r.gar.less of the r.ar.ng velocities used in this study. However. higher.r.ar.ng velocities ar. r.commended to maximize juvenile br.wn tr.ut gr.wth r.tes.
