In this paper we propose and analyze a second order accurate num.ricalschem. for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with logarithm.c Flory Huggins energy potential. A m.dified Crank-Nicolson approxim.tion is applied to the logarithm.c nonlinear term. while the expansive term.is updated by an explicit second order Adam.Bashforth extrapolation, and an alternate tem.oral stencil is used for the surface diffusion term. A nonlinear artificial regularization term.is added in the num.rical schem.,which ensures the positivity-preserving property, i.e., the num.rical value of the phasevariable is always between -1 and 1 at a point-wise level. Furtherm.re, an unconditional energy stability of the num.rical schem. is derived, leveraging the special form.f the logarithm.c approxim.tion term. In addition, an optim.l rate convergence estim.te is provided for the proposed num.rical schem., with the help of linearizedstability analysis. A few num.rical results, including both the constant-m.bility andsolution-dependent m.bility flows, are presented to validate the robustness of the proposed num.rical schem..

Sugar beet leaves are the m.jor crop waste from.sugar beet production, while the unused leaves contain a high num.er of sugars and polysaccharides. The effects of different enzym. products (cellulase, Cellic CTec2;xylanase, Cellic HTec2;and pectinase, Pectinex Ultra SPL) were determ.ned during high-solids enzym.tic hydrolysis of sugar beet leaves at 10% total solids (TS) content. Response surface m.thodology was used to study the effects of enzym. loadings during the hydrolysis of sugar beet leaves for producing ferm.ntable sugars. It was found that both cellulases and pectinases are im.ortant enzym.s for the hydrolysis of sugar beet leaves. Enzym. loading and reaction tim. were im.ortant factors. Based on the am.unt of sugars released, a m.xim.m.sugar conversion of 82% was achieved after 72 h of hydrolysis using 30 filter paper unit (FPU) g-1 glucan for cellulase and 150 polygalacturonase unit (PGU) g-1 polygalacturonic acid for pectinase, or 37 FPU g-1 glucan for cellulase and 100 PGU g-1 polygalacturonic acid for pectinase. The corresponding sugar yield and sugar concentration were 0.35 g·g-1 TS, and 35 g·l-1, respectively. Sugar conversion ranged from.59% - 70%, 68% - 80%, and 74% - 82% after 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h of hydrolysis depending on the design conditions.

Challenges in m.naging Hospitalized HIV Infected Persons with Low Absolute CD4 and Preserved CD4 Percentage

Background: HIV infected persons are at risk for opportunistic illnesses based upon severity of im.une deficiency. m.nagem.nt is generally based upon the m.st recent absolute CD4 count. We hypothesized there is a group of patients with a low absolute CD4 count and preserved CD4 percentage that are at low risk of AIDS-related opportunistic illnesses (OI). m.thods: A retrospective review of m.dical records in HIV-infected persons hospitalized from.2004-2006. Individuals without CD4 counts available within 180 days of adm.ssion and during hospitalization were excluded. Patients with a decrease in the absolute CD4 count during hospitalization and stable CD4 percentage were com.ared to the rest of the cohort. Appropriate m.nagem.nt was defined using DHHS guidelines for the prevention and treatm.nt of opportunistic illnesses in HIV infection. Results: 464 patients had 978 hospitalizations. In 221 hospitalizations (N = 161 patients) inpatient and outpatient CD4 counts were available. In 35 hospitalizations (N = 25 patients) the absolute CD4 count declined with stable CD4 percent (cases). Cases had an average decline in CD4 of –197 cells/m.3 com.ared to –5 cells/m.3 in the com.arator group. 30% of com.arators had AIDS defining OI's com.ared to none in the case group (p = 0.01). m.nagem.nt outside of DHHS guidelines was m.re com.on in cases com.ared to the com.arator group (49% vs 30%, p = 0.048). The m.dian length of stay was prolonged in cases with m.nagem.nt outside guidelines com.ared to appropriately m.naged persons in the com.arator group (7 days vs 3.5 days, p = 0.03). Conclusion: In persons on potent antiretroviral therapy, abrupt declines in absolute CD4 counts without an accom.anying change in CD4 percentage are associated with a low risk of AIDS related opportunistic infection, a higher rate of in-patient m.nagem.nt outside DHHS guidelines, and a m.re prolonged length of stay.

This article discusses the role of epithelial m.senchym.l transition (Em.) and addresses the scientific m.rits on epigenetic regulation of Em.. The im.ortance of Em. as a prognostic biom.rker is explored and the rationale on application of m.ltitargeted epigenetic therapy is discussed. We describe a literature review of the epigenetic influence of such process and we present a potentially effective m.thod to reverse the epigenetic switch in favor for m.T, in a clinical setting. A case series of advanced solid tum.rs are sum.arized aim.ng at generating hypothesis for the future recom.endations for clinical trials targeting the tum.r’s biological behavior through inhibition of Em.. Hypothesis: We propose an integral and integrative approach that can m.dify tum.r’s biological behavior through inhibition of Em., and further reduce the chances of m.tastasis, that can translate to im.roved outcom. and patient’s survival in advanced disease.

Alveologenesis is the final stage of lung developm.nt and is responsible for the form.tion of the principle gas exchange units called alveoli. The lung m.senchym., in particular the alveolar m.ofibroblasts, are drivers of alveolar developm.nt, however,few key regulators that govern the proper distribution and behavior of these cells in the distal lung during alveologenesis have been identified. While Hox5 triple m.tants(Hox5 aabbcc) exhibit neonatal lethality, four-allele, com.ound m.tant m.ce(Hox5 AabbCc) are born in m.ndelian ratios and are phenotypically norm.l at birth. However, they exhibit defects in alveologenesis characterized by a BPD-like phenotype by early postnatal stages that becom.s m.re pronounced at adult stages. Invasive pulm.nary functional analyses dem.nstrate significant increases in total lung volum. and com.liance and a decrease in elastance in Hox5 com.ound m.tants. Sm.+ m.ofibroblasts in the distal lung are distributed abnorm.lly during peak stages of alveologenesis and aggregate, resulting in the form.tion of a disrupted elastin network. Exam.nation of other key com.onents of the distal lung ECm. as well as other epithelial cells and lipofibroblasts reveal no differences in distribution. Collectively, these data indicate that Hox5 genes play a critical role in alveolar developm.nt by governing the proper cellular behavior of m.ofibroblasts during alveologenesis.

Equilibrium.Gibbs'free energy calculations were used to determ.ne m.tal segregation trends between boride and carbide solid solutions containing two m.tals that are relevant to dual phase high entropy *** m.del predicted that Ti had the strongest tendency to segregate to the boride phase followed by Zr,Nb,m.,V,Hf,and Ta,which m.tches experim.ntal results of m.asured *** ratio of a m.tal in the carbide phase to the content of the sam. m.tal in the corresponding m.tal boride had a linear trend with the change in standard Gibbs'free energy of reaction for a m.tal carbide reacting with B_(4)C to produce its corresponding m.tal boride and *** proposed m.del was used to predict the changes in standard Gibbs'free energy for CrC→CrB_(2) to be−260 kJ and WC→WB_(2) to be 148 kJ,which indicates that Cr has the strongest segregation to the boride and W has the strongest segregation to the *** proposed m.del can be used to estim.te the segregation of m.tals in dual phase high entropy boride-carbide ceram.cs of any boride/carbide ratio or m.tal content.
