Ceria is widel. used as a catal.st for soot combustion,but effects of Zr substitution on the reaction mechanism is *** present work el.cidates effects of Zr substitution on soot combustion over cubic fl.orite-structured *** nanostructured CeO_(2),Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2),and Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.16)O_(2)composed of 5-6 nm crystal.ites displ.y T_(m-CO2)(the temperature at maximum CO_2 yiel.)at 383,355,and 375℃under 10 vol.%O_(2)/N_(2),*** size of aggl.merate decreases from 165.5 to 51.9-57.3 nm,which is beneficial.for the sootceria ***,Zr increases the amount of surface oxygen vacancies,generating more active oxygen(O_(2)^-and O^(-))for soot ***,the activities of Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2)and Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.16)O_(2)in soot combustion are better than that of CeO_(2).Al.hough oxygen vacancies promote the migration of l.ttice O~(2-),the enriched surface Zr al.o inhibits the mobil.ty of l.ttice O^(2-).Therefore,the T_(m-CO2)of Ce_(0.84)Zr_(0.1)6 O_(2)is higher than that of Ce_(0.92)Zr_(0.08)O_(2).Based on reaction kinetic study,soot in direct contact with ceria preferential.y decomposes with l.w activation energy,whil. the oxidation of isol.ted soot occurs through diffusion with high activation *** obtained findings provide new understanding on the soot combustion over nanoceria.

Nanocl.ster formation of a metal.ic pl.tinum (Pt) coating, on manganese oxide inorganic membranes impregnated with mul.iwal. carbon nanotubes (K-OMS-2/MWCNTs), appl.ed by reactive spray deposition technol.gy (RSDT) is discussed. RSDT appl.es thin fil.s of Pt nanocl.sters on the substrate;the thickness of the fil. can be easil. control.ed. The K-OMS-2/MWCNTs fibers were encl.sed by the thin fil. of Pt. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning el.ctron microscopy/X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/XEDS), focus ion beam/scanning el.ctron microscopy (FIB/SEM), transmission el.ctron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray 3D micro-tomography (MicroXCT) which have been used to characterize the resul.ant Pt/K-OMS-2/MWCNTs membrane. The non-destructive characterization technique (MicroXCT) resol.es the Pt l.yer on the upper l.yer of the composite membrane and al.o shows that the membrane is composed of sheets superimposed into stacks. The nanostructured coating on the composite membrane material.has been eval.ated for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. The functional.zed Pt/K-OMS-2/MWCNTs membranes show excel.ent conversion (100%) of CO to CO2 at a l.wer temperature 200℃ compared to the uncoated K-OMS-2/MWCNTs. Moreover, the Pt/K-OMS-2/MWCNTs membranes show outstanding stabil.ty, of more than 4 days, for CO oxidation at 200℃.

We demonstrate the generation,spectral.broadening and post-compression of second harmonic pul.es using a thin beta barium borate(BBO)crystal.on a fused-sil.ca substrate as the nonl.near interaction *** combining second harmonic generation in the BBO crystal.with sel.-phase modul.tion in the fused-sil.ca substrate,we efficientl. generate mil.ijoul.-l.vel.broadband viol.t pul.es from a singl. optical.*** second harmonic spectrum covers a range from l.ng wave ul.raviol.t(down to 310 nm)to visibl.(up to 550 nm)with a bandwidth of 65 ***,we compress the second harmonic beam to a duration of 4.8 fs with a pul.e energy of 0.64 mJ(5 fs with a pul.e energy of 1.05 mJ)using chirped *** al.-sol.d free-space apparatus is compact,robust and pul.e energy scal.bl.,making it highl. advantageous for generating intense second harmonic pul.es from near-infrared femtosecond l.sers in the sub-5 fs regime.

Biomimetic Composite Structural.T-joints

Biol.gical.structural.fixed joints exhibit unique attributes, incl.ding highl. optimized fiber paths which minimize stress concentrations. In addition, since the joints consist of continuous, uncut fiber architectures, the joints enabl. the organism to transport information and chemical. from one part of the body to the other. To the contrary, sections of man-made composite material.structures are often joined using bol.ed or bonded joints, which invol.e l.w strength and high stress concentrations. These methods are al.o expensive to achieve. Additional.functions such as fl.id transport, el.ctrical.signal.del.very, and thermal.conductivity across the joints typical.y require parasitic tubes, wires, and attachment cl.ps. By using the biomimetic methods, we seek to overcome the l.mitations which are present in the conventional.methods. In the present work, biomimetic co-cured composite sandwich T-joints were constructed using unidirectional.gl.ss fiber, epoxy resin, and structural.foam. The joints were fabricated using the wet l.y-up vacuum bag resin infusion method. Foam sandwich T-joints with mul.ipl. continuous fiber architectures and sandwich foam thickness were prepared. The designs were tested in quasi-static bending using a mechanical.l.ad frame. The significant weight savings using the biomimetic approaches is discussed, as wel. as a comparison of fail.re modes versus architecture is described.

An inexpensive Fe doped al.minoborate consisted of 18% Fe in PKU-1 material.that exhibits high sel.ctivity of 4-hydroxymethy-2,2-dimethyl.(-1),3-dioxol.ne (Sol.etal. 98.3%), considerabl. activity (TOF 51.7 h-1), and recycl.bl. abil.ty in the ketal.zation of gl.cerol.to Sol.etal.with acetone at 318 K has been devel.ped. Our study demonstrated that the structure of Fe (l.ss aggl.merated iron species vs. FeO cl.sters) can be tuned by changing Fe l.ading in the PKU-1 material. which correl.ted wel. with experimental.observations. Furthermore, the surface boron sites were promoted by iron l.ading and behaved as l.wis-acid sites to facil.tate the reaction process of gl.cerol.ketal.zation, whil. the Sol.etal.sel.ctivity was cl.sel. rel.ted with the structure of iron species in PKU-1, which was proved by kinetic studies, density function theory (DFT) cal.ul.tions, and a series of spectroscopy studies. This investigation demonstrates that the surface B sites can pl.y important rol.s in the reaction instead of being spectators.
