Ba.teria.of the genus La.toba.illus a.e widely used a. ora. probiotics due to their puta.ive hea.th benefits. In this study, we compa.ed the coloniza.ion a.ility of two La.toba.illus stra.ns tha. were identified a. a.tochthonous to the huma. ga.trointestina. tra.t (La.toba.illus reuteri a.CC PTa.6475 (MM4-1a. a.d (La.toba.illus mucosa. FSL-04) with tha. of a. a.lochthonous stra.n (La.toba.illus a.idophilus DDS-1). Coloniza.ion a.ility wa. tested in a.single-blinded, cross-over study, with twelve huma. subjects. The test stra.ns were qua.tified in feca. sa.ples by two independent methods, selective pla.ing a.d molecula. typing a.d qua.tita.ive rea. time PCR. The study revea.ed tha. the two a.tochthonous stra.ns (L. reuteri a.CC PTa.6475 a.d L. mucosa. FSL-04) rea.hed higher popula.ion levels in feca. sa.ples a.d were recovered more frequently from subjects compa.ed to the a.lochthonous stra.n (L. a.idophilus DDS-1). a.l three stra.ns beca.e undetecta.le 8 da.s a.ter the end of consumption with one exception, showing tha. persistence of a.l three stra.ns rema.ns short term in most individua.s. In conclusion, this study showed tha. a.tochthonous La.toba.illus stra.ns ca. be esta.lished more efficiently, a.beit tempora.ily, in the huma. ga.trointestina. tra.t, suggesting tha. evolutiona.y a.d ecologica. cha.a.teristics could be va.ua.le criteria.for the selection of probiotic stra.ns.
