Preventing Implant Bacterial Infections with Interconnected 3D Porous Structures (I3D)— A Proof-of-Concept Study

Oral antibiotics are often prescribed to prevent infection after implant surgery;however, only a small fraction of the antibiotics can reach the implants. Thus, there are concerns about overusing antibiotics. We designed and fabricated porous implants with interconnecting 3D structures (I3D) and hypothesized that such I3D structures could serve as a depository for antimicrobial agents to prevent infection locally. The implants were either treated with antibiotics or coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by electrodeposition to test this hypothesis. The antimicrobial assay was conducted, and bacterial growth zones of inhibition (ZOIs) were monitored. Overall, I3D implants resulted in larger ZOIs than did the solid implants, and the center I3D (cI3D)-implant produced the largest ZOI. In the antibiotic treatment testing, the diameters of ZOIs of the solid implant vs. I3D implant were about 14 mm vs. 15 to 18 mm on day 2;however, the diameter quickly reduced to 9 mm on day 3 and 5 mm on days 6 and 8 for the solid implant, while no obvious change of the zone was seen for I3D implants. For the AgNPs coated implants, the ZOIs for the I3D implants were generally greater than the solid implant over four weeks of incubation. A significantly larger ZOI (~1 - 2 mm larger on average) was seen for AgNPs coated I3D implants at 0.1 V - 0.01 M, 0.3 V - 0.01 M, and 1.5 V - 0.01 M treatments compared to AgNPs coated solid implants. Given that we have previously shown that I3D implants can reserve chemoattractants to recruit stem cells to enhance osseointegration, we conclude that implants with the I3D structures could be beneficial not only for osseointegration but also in preventing infection.

本文以基于EBD(Electrical Board Description)模型的DDRSODIMM Module与FPGA IC验证平台互连,利用Cadence Allegro PCB SI软件对DDR与FPGA之间进行信号完整性分析为例,介绍了EBD模型的特点以及将其转换为DML文件的流程。并提出了采用Perl5.1语言脚本程序将EBD模型转换成EBB(Electrical SPICE Black Box)模型的自动化解决方法,从而使修改后的Topology包含更全面真实的寄生参数模型信息。同时还给出了单端、差分信号的Topology以及仿真分析的波形结果。

通用的FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array,现场可编程逻辑门阵列)验证平台在运行不同的应用时,其瞬态电流需求是不同的。本文以基于Xilinx公司的Virtex-4系列千万门级的FPGA高端IC验证平台为例,采用Cadence PCB PI(Power Integrity)分析软件,对多种地电平面、电容值、电容的放置位置、电容的类型等进行评估,然后通过修正电容数量和额定值,调整电容的布局以及封装等,达到符合要求的电源-地平面目标阻抗,从而将电源/地平面上的噪声降低到电源的要求范围内。本文提出的电源完整性分析方法,对其他类型的系统板级设计也有一定的指导意义。

Deriving the magnetopause position from wide field-of-view soft X-ray imager simulation

Imaging techniques provide essential information in astronomical and space physics *** Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)will obtain images of the Earth’s magnetosphere via the solar wind charge exchange process in a global ***,it is a challenge to reconstruct its 3-D structures from the observed 2-D image(s).In this paper,a recently proposed method,Tangent Fitting Approach(TFA),is validated to reconstruct the large-scale magnetopause from a single X-ray image obtained by instrument *** is revealed that the large-scale magnetopause under a medium solar wind number density can be well reconstructed,although the locations of maximum X-ray photon counts are scattered in the image due to instrumental effects and diffusive sky *** solar wind number density leads to stronger signals and further leads to better reconstruction *** lower solar wind density,the X-ray maximum photon counts may not be identified from the SXI simulations,preprocessing of the images shall be considered before applying ***,the subsolar magnetopause can be well derived when the satellite is on the dayside orbits.

The challenge of meeting the increasing demand for worldwide rice production has driven a sustained quest for advances in rice breeding for yield. Two breakthroughs that led to quantum leaps in productivity last century were the introduction of semidwarf varieties and of hybrid rice. Subsequent gains in yield have been incremental. The next major leap in rice breeding is now upon us through the application of rational design to create defined ideotypes. The exploitation of wide-cross compatibility and intersubspecific heterosis,combined with rapid genome sequencing and the molecular identification of genes for major yield and quality traits have now unlocked the potential for rational design.

An iterative blending integrating grinding force model considering grain size and dislocation density evolution

The dynamic force load in grinding process is considered as a crucial factor affecting the quality of parts,and a better understanding of the mechanism of force generation is conducive to revealing the evolution of material microstructure more *** this study,an iterative blending integrating grinding force model that comprehensively considers the impact of grain size and dislocation density evolution of the material is *** to the grinding kinematics,the interaction of grit-workpiece is divided into rubbing,plowing,and chip formation stages in each grinding *** this basis,the evolution of material microstructure in the current chip formation stage will affect the rubbing force in the next grinding arc through flow stresses,which in turn will influence the total grinding ***,the flow stress models in rubbing and chip formation stages are firstly established,and then the dislocation density prediction model is established experimentally based on the characteristics of grain *** effects of the evolution of grain size and dislocation density on the grinding forces during the grinding process are studied by means of iterative *** results indicate that the implementation of an iterative blending scheme is instrumental in obtaining a higher accurate prediction of the grinding force and a deeper insight of the influence mechanisms of materials microstructure on grinding process.

Pioneering observation of atmospheric volatile organic compounds in Hangzhou in eastern China and implications for upcoming 2022 Asian Games

Understanding the emission sources of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)is critical for air pollution *** measurements of atmospheric VOCs were conducted from January to February in Hangzhou in *** average measured concentration of total VOCs(TVOCs)was 38.2±20.9 ppb,>42% lower than that reported by previous studies at the urban center in *** VOC concentrations and proportions were similar between weekdays and *** the long holidays of the Spring Festival in China,the concentrations of TVOCs were∼50% lower than those during the regular days,but their profiles showed no significant difference(p>0.05).Further,we deduced that aromatics and alkenes were the most crucial chemicals promoting the formation of O3 and secondary organic aerosol(SOA)in *** to interspecies correlations,combustion processes and solvent use were inferred as major VOC emission *** study provides implications for air quality improvements before and during the upcoming Asian Games that will be hosted in Hangzhou in 2022.

Competition and abiotic stress affect the size of mangroves near their geographic range limit

Studies of competition in mangroves are mostly limited to seedlings and artificial settings like forestry *** conducted the first experimental study of intraspecific competition among adult mangroves in a natural mangrove forest to examine how important competition is in determining tree size compared with abiotic *** conducted a study near Port Aransas,TX,USA,which is near the geographical limit of mangroves and dominated by monospecific stands of‘scrub’form black mangroves,Avicennia *** thinned 10 plots to create a gradient of mangrove cover,and quantified the effects of mangrove cover on the growth of tagged mangroves from 2013 to 2019,and the mangrove canopy height in *** relative growth rate of tagged mangroves declined as mangrove cover increased,and plants in the plot with 100%mangrove cover did not grow,indicating that they had attained their maximum *** plots with reduced mangrove cover,plant height increased sharply,with plants in the plot with 11%mangrove cover growing~52%taller over 6 *** height was~30%taller in the plot fringe than in the interior,and canopy height in both fringe and interior declined as mangrove cover *** of leaf chlorophyll concentration and light interception suggested that plants were primarily limited by *** results showed that scrub mangroves compete strongly despite being limited by abiotic conditions,and that the importance of competition was greater in magnitude than that of abiotic differences between the fringe and interior.

Tectonic and climatic controls for fluvial terraces of the Yellow River over the past 2.6 Ma at Northeast Tibetan Plateau and Ordos Block

The Yellow River is usually assumed to record tectonic activities and climatic changes;however,a systematic study was lack in the sedimentology,stratigraphy,geomorphology and geochronology for the entire Yellow River though various geologic scholars have conducted numerous works in individual *** review focused on well-preserved fluvial terrace sequences that formed along this river on northeastern(NE)Tibetan Plateau and Ordos Block over the past 2.6 *** comparing numerous initial incision ages at different segments along the Yellow River,we found out that the youngest initial incision may occur at ca.150 ka at the Longyang *** Yellow River may transit from multiple separated endorheic drainages to an entire external drainage after 150 ka,which may cause differentiations in the apparent incision rates before and after 150 ka;thus apparent net incision rates were calculated respectively for the Yellow River before 150 ka and the drainage network post 150 *** net incision rates prior to 0.15 Ma were calculated as 0.15,0.29,0.10,0.12 and 0.03 mm/a respectively in Tongde-Xunhua,Lanzhou-Linxia basins,Heishan,Jinshan and Fenwei-Sanmen Gorges in this review,which mainly reflected Kunhuang-Gonghe Tectonic Event,generated by the Indo-Asian collision and diminishing as the NE Tibetan Plateau eastward extruding at ca.1.8-0.15 *** net incision rates post 0.15 Ma were calculated respectively for NE Tibetan Plateau and Ordos Block,considering their different base *** NE Tibetan Plateau,four fluvial degradational phases were identified between ca.105~70,53~40,25~16 and 12~6 ka associated with terrace levels respectively,at average elevations of 96,40,20 and 10.5 meters above the current river level(m arl)within a range of 5~96 m arl;and four broad periods in the last 150 ka on Ordos Block:possibly marine oxygen isotope stage(MIS)5,ca.118 to 72 ka,most of MIS 3,ca.44~28 ka,transition from LGM to last deglacial ca.20 to 16 ka,and 4~3 ka at ave

A Lunar-based Soft X-ray Imager(LSXI)for the Earth's magnetosphere
