p.ants have evolved tightly regulated signaling networks to resp.nd and adap. to environmental p.rturbations, but the nature of the signaling hub（s） involved have remained an enigma. We have p.eviously established that methylerythritol cyclodip.osp.ate （MEcp.）, a p.ecursor of p.astidial isop.enoids and a stress- sp.cific retrograde signaling metabolite, enables cellular readjustments for high-order adap.ive functions. Here, we sp.cifically show that MEcp. p.omotes two Brassicaceae-sp.cific traits, namely endop.asmic reticulum （ER） body formation and induction of indole glucosinolate （IGs） metabolism selectively, via tran- scrip.ional regulation of key regulators NAIl for ER body formation and MYB51/122 for IGs biosynthesis）. The sp.cificity of MEcp. is further confirmed by the lack of induction of wound-inducible ER body genes as well as IGs by other altered methylerythritol p.osp.ate p.thway enzymes. Genetic analyses revealed MEcp.-mediated COil-dep.ndent induction of these traits. Moreover, MEcp. signaling integrates the biosynthesis and hydrolysis of IGs through induction of nitrile-sp.cifier p.otein1 and reduction of the sup. p.essor, ESM1, and p.oduction of simp.e nitriles as the bioactive end p.oduct. The findings p.sition the p.astidial metabolite, MEcp., as the initiation hub, transducing signals to adjust the activity of hard- wired gene circuitry to exp.nd p.ytochemical diversity and alter the associated subcellular structure required for functionality of the secondary metabolites, thereby tailoring p.ant stress resp.nses.

The stem barks of p.unus africana are used in the treatment of the benign p.ostate. Cameroon is one of the imp.rtant exp.rters of the barks. Desp.te the imp.rtant measures adop.ed in Cameroon for sustaining its harvesting, some many chalenges still remain. The objective of this work is to refine the forest management p.rameters in relation to p. africana in the regions of Adamaoua and the South-West by develop.ng a volume rate which makes it p.ssible to estimate the p.oduction for a new stem. The work took p.ace in two p.ases: in the South-West in 2010 and in Adamaoua in 2011. Data collection used the semi-direct method, while the cubing equation was deduced by the multip.e linear regression method. Two models for volume estimation and three models for mass p.ediction were develop.d. The p.edictive p.rameters retained are diameter, height of the bole and thickness of the bark. Results show that the average mass of the dry bark for a given p. africana tree sp.cies is 27.55 ± 14.44 kg and this varies according to the site. The strong adjusted coefficient of determination (adjusted R2) observed illustrates the reliability of the p.op.sed models. These models p.ovide a reliable tool that can be adop.ed as a standard in Cameroon for p. africana.

Traditional comp.ementary foods in Africa are cereal-based, low in nutrient-density;hence, causing severe-acute-malnutrition. This study was aimed to formulate and evaluate nutritional quality of comp.ementary foods (CF) using locally available food materials. Yellow maize (raw, germinated & fermented), defatted groundnut (DGF) and ginger flour (GGF) were blended to obtain RDG (76.7% raw yellow maize, 20.8% DGF and 2.5% GGF), GDG (74.4% germinated yellow maize, 23.1% DGF, 2.5% GGF), and FDG (72.6% fermented yellow maize, 24.9% DGF, 2.5% GGF). Food samp.es were evaluated for nutritional qualities and sensory attributes using standard methods. p.otein (g/100 g), energy value (kCal/100 g), total amino acids and essential amino acids (g/100 g p.otein) of formulated CF ranged from 19.38 to 28.58, 373.49 to 394.53, 87.33 to 91.89 and 36.17 to 37.63, resp.ctively, and were comp.rable to control (17.07, 401.22, 94.47 & 35.35). Minerals were p.esent in ap.reciable amount in the foods, while p.ytate/mineral (Ca, Fe, Zn) and oxalate/calcium molar ratios were lower than critical levels. Bulk density (1.4 - 1.6 g/mL), least gelation (4 - 6%), water absorp.ion cap.city (10.5 - 15.8%) and swelling cap.city (0.5 - 1.2%) were significantly (p.p. for bulk density. Biological value (78.44%) of FDG was significantly (p.p.ctively, but lower than control (93.48%). p.ck cell volume (22.50%), haemoglobin concentration (7.5 g/dL), red blood cell (3 × 103 mm− 3), albumin (3.72 g/dL), total blood p.otein (5.62 g/dL) and globulin (1.9 g/dL) of rats fed on FDG were significantly (p.p.rable to that of control. Kidney (urea, 10.16 mg/dL;creatinine, 4.8 mg/dL) and liver function index (AST/ALT ratio, 0.38) of rats fed on FDG were lower than in those rats fed on RDG, GDG and control. Dynamic p.tterns of Gene Exp.ession Additivity and Regulatory Variation throughout Maize Develop.ent

Gene exp.ession variation is a key comp.nent underlying p.enotyp.c variation and heterosis. Transcrip.ome p.ofiling was p.rformed on 23 different tissues or develop.ental stages of two maize inbreds, B73 and Mo17, as well as their hybrid. The obtained large-scale datasets p.ovided op.ortunities to monitor the develop.ental dynamics of differential exp.ession, additivity for gene exp.ession, and regulatory variation. The transcrip.ome can be divided into .30 000 genes that are exp.essed in at least one tissue of one in bred and an additional ~10 000 “silent” genes that are not exp.essed in any tissue of any genotyp., 90% of which are non-syntenic relative to other grasses. Many (.74%) of the exp.essed genes exhibit differential exp.ession in at least one tissue. However, the majority of genes with differential exp.ession do not exhibit consistent differential exp.ession in different tissues. These genes often exhibit tissue-sp.cific differential exp.ession with equivalent exp.ession in other tissues, and in many cases they switch the directionality of differential exp.ession in different tissues. This suggests widesp.ead variation for tissue-sp.cific regulation of gene exp.ession between the two maize inbreds B73 and Mo17. Nearly 5000 genes are exp.essed in only one p.rent in at least one tissue (single p.rent exp.ession) and 97% of these genes are exp.essed at mid-p.rent levels or higher in the hybrid, p.oviding extensive op.ortunities for hybrid comp.ementation in heterosis. In general, additive exp.ession p.tterns are much more common than non-additive p.tterns, and this trend is more p.onounced for genes with strong differential exp.ession or single p.re nt exp.essi on. There is relatively little evidence for non-additive exp.ession p.tterns that are maintained in multip.e tissues. The p.ocessed whole jute seed flour(JSF),p.otein isolate(JSI)and hydrolysate(JSH)were subjects to amino-acids,p.ytochemicals,p.enolic p.ofiles,antioxidant,and enzymes(p.ncreatic lip.se,α-amylase andα-glucosidase)inhibitory p.op.rties *** and in-vitro p.otein digestibility of the samp.es ranged were 10−66 g/100 g and 17.5%−20.8%,***,sulp.ur,aromatic,branched chain,antioxidant,and hydrop.obic amino-acids concentrations varied from 30.97−34.74,2.91−3.53,11.50−12.49,14.12−16.55,17.84−20.39,and 36.59−42.41 g/100 g p.otein,*** concentrations were significantly different(p.0.05).For p.enolic p.ofile,vanillic acid had the highest concentration followed by naringin *** exhibited highest antioxidant activity in resp.ct to 1,1-dip.enyl-2-p.cryl-hydrazyl(Dp.H),Fe2+chelation,OH radical,2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)and ferric reducing antioxidant p.wer,and inhibitory p.op.rties against lip.se(53.4%),α-amylase(31.8%)andα-glucosidase(43.8%)enzymes,while JSF had the *** conclusion,JSI exhibited sup.eme scavenging activities and attenuation of lip.se,and carbohydrate hydrolyzing ***,JSI may be suitable as therap.utic agent for the p.evention/management of food related diseases instead of synthetics agents with many side effects.

Quantitative Absolute Continuity of Harmonic Measure and the Dirichlet p.oblem: A Survey of Recent p.ogress

It is a well-known folklore result that quantitative, scale invariant absolute continuity(more p.ecisely, the weak-A∞ p.op.rty) of harmonic measure with resp.ct to surface measure, on the boundary of an op.n set Ω ? R^(n+1) with Ahlfors–David regular boundary, is equivalent to the solvability of the Dirichlet p.oblem in Ω, with data in L^p.(?Ω) for some p.p.oblem, with continuous boundary data, can be solved, one may seek to characterize the op.n sets for which L^p.olvability holds, thus allowing for singular boundary *** has been known for some time that absolute continuity of harmonic measure is closely tied to rectifiability p.op.rties of ?Ω, but also that rectifiability alone is not sufficient to guarantee absolute continuity. In this note, we survey recent p.ogress in this area, culminating in a geometric characterization of the weak-A∞ p.op.rty, and hence of solvability of the L^p.Dirichlet p.oblem for some finite p. This characterization, obtained under rather op.imal background hyp.theses, follows from a combination of the p.esent author's joint work with Martell, and the work of Azzam, Mourgoglou and Tolsa.

Effect of 2% fluorescein on Scheimp.lug central corneal thickness measurements

AIM： To assess central corneal thickness （CCT） changes measured with Scheimp.lug device following instillation of 2% fluorescein in normal subjects. ~ METHODS： This was a p.osp.ctive randomized study of 60 hosp.tal volunteers. After baseline CCT measurements of both eyes of 40 subjects were obtained using Scheimp.lug system, a drop.of p.eservative-free 2% fluorescein, was instilled in one eye and in other eye, one drop.of normal saline （control）. Measurements were rep.ated after 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60min （continuous assessment group.. Twenty subjects had baseline CCT taken, then fluorescein was instilled in one eye and measurements were taken at lmin. Ten eyes had saline rinse after lmin and 10 other eyes did not, measurements were rep.ated at 2min （eye rinse group.. RESULTS： The mean baseline CCT for continuous assessment group.was 546.2±32.1um （range, 489.0-606.0）, control eyes was 546.6~±30.7 um （range, 489.0-602.0）. At lmin after fluorescein instillation, CCT significantly increased by 37.0±34.0um （p.0.001）, then decreased gradually, reaching baseline at 60min. CCT variations were not significant in control group.（p.0.05）. For eye rinse group. CCT mean differences between baseline and 2min were 18.2um （95 % Ch -54.7 to 18.3） with rinse and 26.5um （95% CI： -62.9 to 9.9） without rinse; p.ired samp.e tests were not significant （p.0.05）. CONCLUSION： The p.esence of fluorescein increased CCT value to a clinically relevant level of 6.8%. Eye rinse did not significantly reduce the effect at 2min p.st fluorescein timep.int.

One of the most common traditional fermented food p.oducts consumed by all class of p.op.e in Southern p.rt of Nigeria is *** is a gurel made from different typ.s of cereal ranging from maize,sorghum,millet among ***,this study was aimed to evaluate nutrient,p.ytochemicals,functional p.op.rties,and glycemic index of Ogi p.oduced from different *** such as yellow maize(YM),white maize(WM),p.p.orn maize(p.),red sorghum(RS),white sorghum(WS)and finger millet(FM)were p.ocessed into Ogi samp.es,p.ckaged in airtight container p.ior to analysis and stored at–20℃.p.oximate results showed that Ogi samp.e p.oduced from p. significantly contained the highest p.otein content followed by samp.e *** was observed to be the most abundant mineral elements in Ogi(14.50–19.10 mg/100 g).The p.ytochemical comp.sition(mg/g)of the exp.rimental samp.es ranged from 0.34–1.62,53.82–177.09,0.00–0.10,3.71–69.22 and 2.08–6.08 mg/g in oxalate,sap.nin,flavonoid,p.ytate and tannin,*** glycemic index ranged 48.83%in YM to 50.71%in WS,while the glycemic load ranged 31.96%in YM to 37.82%in WS,*** result revealed that Ogi samp.es,esp.cially YM was high in calcium,Ca/p.ratio,iron,zinc but low in p.ytate and tannin *** YM also exhibit lower glycemic index,when comp.red with other Ogi ***,YM may be a better grain for the p.oduction of Ogi samp.es.
