Response of soil bacterial community to biochar application in a boreal pine forest

Boreal forests commonly suff er from nitrogen defi ciency due to low rate of nitrogen *** may promote soil organic matter decomposition and accelerate nitrogen *** this study,Illumina NovaSeq sequencing combined with functional annotation of prokaryotic taxa(FAPROTAX)analysis was used to investigate the eff ect of biochar pyrolysis temperatures,the amount of applied biochar,and the period since the biochar application(2-and 3-year)on soil bacterial *** results show that biochar pyrolysis temperatures(500℃ and 650℃)and the amount of applied biochar(0.5 kg m^(−2)and 1.0 kg m^(−2))did not change soil ***,the interaction of biochar pyrolysis temperature and the amount had signifi cant eff ects on bacterial species richness and evenness(P<0.05).The application of biochar produced at 500℃ had a lower abundance of Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia,while that produced at 650℃ had a higher abundance of Conexibacter and *** biochar produced at 650℃ was applied,applying 0.5 kg m^(−2)had a higher abundance of Cyanobacteria,Conexibacter,and Phenylobacterium than that of 1.0 kg m^(−2)(P<0.05).Functionally,the abundance of the aromatic compound degradation group increased with the extension of application time and increase of pyrolysis *** time since application played an important role in the formation of soil bacterial communities and their functional ***-term studies are necessary to understand the consequence of biochar on bacterial communities in boreal forests.

Recruitment in species-rich grasslands: the effects of functional traits and propagule pressure

Aims The assembly of plant communities is a complex process which combines impacts from the species pool,dispersal and propagule pressure,niche requirements of colonizing species and the niche structure of the *** theory development has incorporated all these aspects,***‘stochastic niche theory’.We investigated recruitment into a species-rich grassland community,using an experimental approach where we manipulated the trait composition of the community and examined the success of colonizing species entering with various propagule ***,we examined two predictions:(i)colonization success increases with increasing difference between traits of the colonizing species and the trait profile of the community and(ii)colonization success increases with increasing propagule *** The examined communities were species-rich semi-natural grasslands located in southern *** a careful documentation of the composition of the plant communities at the experimental sites,we manipulated the trait profile of species-rich grassland plots based on the plant functional trait specific leaf area(SLA),which is correlated with several key life history *** addition to SLA,seed mass was also used to describe the trait profile of grassland *** of 12 plant species from the regional species pool,varying in SLA and seed mass,were sown into plots using four different levels of propagule *** was examined after 1 *** also planted juvenile‘plug plants’of the same species which allowed us to examine survivorship and growth beyond the seedling *** Findings Overall we found very limited evidence for relationships between the traits of the colonizing species and the trait profile of the community and for recruitment after sowing these relationships were contrary to the *** of plug plants after two seasons of growth was high irrespective of the trait profile of the community,but growth of plug

Comparative study of polyhydroxyalkanoates production from acidified and anaerobically treated brewery wastewater using enriched mixed microbial culture

The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) from wastewaters using microbial mixed cultures(MMC) has been attracting increased interest because of PHA's biodegradability characteristics. Production of PHA by an MMC enriched with PHA-accumulating bacteria was compared using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewaters under various feeding strategies, namely pulse and batch feed addition. To obtain an enriched MMC, a sequencing batch reactor was inoculated with activated sludge fed with acetate and subjected to aerobic dynamic feeding. The enriched MMC was able to accumulate PHA up to 72.6% of cell dry weight(CDW) with pulse addition of acetate controlled by the dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration in the reactor. In a batch accumulation experiment with acetate,the PHA content achieved(28.5% CDW) was less than that of the pulse feeding strategy with the same amount of acetate(～2000 mg C/L). Using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewater fed in pulses, the maximum PHA accumulated by the enriched MMC was similar for both wastewaters(45% CDW), in spite of the higher volatile fatty acid concentration in acidified brewery wastewater. The pulse feed addition controlled by the DO concentration was difficult to implement for wastewater as compared to acetate because the difference in DO concentration between substrate availability and depletion was low. For the batch addition of acidified wastewater, a slightly lower PHA content(39%CDW) was obtained. These results show that both brewery wastewaters can be utilized for PHA production with a similar maximum PHA storage capacity.

Finite cell method compared to h-version finite element method for elasto-plastic problems

The finite cell method （FCM） combines the high-order finite element method （FEM） with the fictitious domain approach for the purpose of simple meshing. In the present study, the FCM is used to the Prandtl-Reuss flow theory of plasticity, and the results are compared with the h-version finite element method （h-FEM）. The numerical results show that the FCM is more efficient compared to the h-FEM for elasto-plastic problems, although the mesh does not conform to the boundary. It is also demonstrated that the FCM performs well for elasto-plastic loading and unloading.

AIM:To investigate associations between ethnicity,age and sex and the risk,colon distribution and density scores of diverticular disease(DD).METHODS:Barium enemas were examined in 1000 patients:410 male,590 female;760 whites,62 Asians,44 black africans(BAs),and 134 other blacks(OBs).Risks and diverticula density of left-sided DD(LSDD) and rightsided-component DD(RSCDD = right-sided DD + right and left DD + Pan-DD) were compared using logistic ***:Four hundred and forty-seven patients had DD(322 LSDD and 125 RSCDD).Adjusted risks:(1) LSDD:each year increase in age increased the odds by 6%(95% CI:5-8,SE:0.8%,P < 0.001);Asians:odds ratio(OR):0.23(95% CI:0.10-0.53,SE:0.1,P ≤ 0.001) and OBs:OR:0.25(95% CI:0.14-0.43,SE:0.07,P ≤ 0.001) appeared protected vs Whites;(2) RSCDD:each year increase in age increased the odds by 4%(95% CI:2-6,SE:1%,P < 0.001);females were 0.60 times(95% CI:0.40-0.90,SE:0.12,P = 0.01) less likely than males to have RSCDD;BAs were 3.51 times(95% CI:1.70-7.24,SE:1.30,P < 0.001) more likely than Whites to have RSCDD;and(3) DD density scores:each year increase in age increased the odds of highdensity scores by 4%(95% CI:1-6,SE:1%,P < 0.001);RSCDD was 2.77 times(95% CI:1.39-3.32,SE:0.67,P < 0.001) more likely to be of high density than *** further signif icant differences were found in the adjusted ***:Right colonic DD might be more common and has higher diverticula density in the west than previously *** appear predisposed to DD,whereas other ethnic differences appear conserved following migration.

Many problems with underlying variational structure involve a coupling of volume with surface effects.A straight-forward approach in a finite element discretiza- tion is to make use of the surface triangulation that is naturally induced by the volume *** an adaptive method one wants to facilitate'matching'local mesh modifications,i.e.,local refinement and/or coarsening,of volume and surface mesh with standard tools such that the surface grid is always induced by the volume grid. We describe the concepts behind this approach for bisectional refinement and describe new tools incorporated in the finite element toolbox *** also present several important applications of the mesh coupling.

Occurrence of micropollutants in the wastewater streams of cruise ships

Nowadays the protection of the marine environment raises increasing academic and public *** issue of organic micropollutants is of equally high importance for the marine *** vessels are considered to significant sources of micropollutants especially if the ship carries many passengers,which is often true for cruise ships which frequent attractive and sensitive sea *** emission pathways for micropollutants include wastewater discharges and sewage sludge *** findings of the German research and development project NAUTEK contribute to bridging the knowledge gap about micropollutant emissions from cruise *** expected,micropollutants were detected in both the blackwater and greywater on board,emitted from either the passengers or certain ship *** total,16 out of 21 target substances were *** concentrations of pharmaceuticals could be found mainly in blackwater(peak *** 3.9 mg/L,Ibuprofen 29 mg/L,Diclofenac 0.04 mg/L),while greywater is mainly characterized by substances such as ointment residues,UV-filters and flame retardants(peak *** 0.65 mg/L,Bisphenol A 8 mg/L,Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate 136 mg/L).Further analyses suggest a gradual removal of the micropollutants by the onboard MBR plant(MBR effluent peak *** 0.47 mg/L,Ibuprofen 6.8 mg/L,Diclofenac 0.3 mg/L).Findings of this research provide a critical stepstone for shaping technical solutions for onboard micropollutants removal and water resource recycling.
