Neuronal loss and axonal degeneration are important pathological features of many neurodegenerative diseases. The molecular mechanisms underlying the majority of axonal degeneration conditions remain *** better understand axonal degeneration,we studied a mouse mutant wabbler-Iethal(wl).Wabbler-lethal(wl) mutant mice develop progressive ataxia with pronounced neurodegeneration in the central and peripheral nervous *** studies have led to a debate of whether myelinopathy or axonopathy is the primary cause of neurodegeneration observed in wl mice. Here we provide clear evidence that wabbler lethal mutants develop an axonopathy,and that this axonopathy is modulated by Wld and Bax *** addition,we have identified the gene harboring the disease-causing mutations as *** studied three wl alleles and found that all result from mutations in the Atp8a2 *** analysis shows that ATP8A2 possesses phosphatidylserine translocase activity and is involved in localization of phosphatidylserine to the inner leaflet of the plasma ***8a2 is widely expressed in the brain,the spinal cord,and *** assessed two of the mutant alleles of Atp8a2 and found they are both nonfunctional for the phosphatidylserine translocase activity. Conclusions:Our data demonstrate for the first time that mutation of a mammalian phosphatidylserine translocase causes axon degeneration and neurodegenerative disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute inflammatory disorder of children frequently associated with the development of coronary artery abnormalities. Although a gr eat deal is known about inflammatory and immune responses in acute KD, the mecha nisms linking the immune response to vascular changes are not known. To gain fur ther insight into this process, we performed a microarray gene expression analys is on RNA isolated from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of four patients with KD during both their acute and convalescent phases. Fortyseven genes of 712 9 genes examined showed an increased expression in three or all four patients in the acute compared with the convalescent phase of KD. Fourteen of these genes w ere significantly (p mmatory resp onse genes (e. g. S-100 A9 protein) and also anti-inflammatory genes (e. g. TS G-6). Of greatest interest, the adrenomedullin (ADm) gene, known to be associat ed with coronary artery vasodilation, was up-regulated in the acute phase of KD (p = 0.024). Up-regulation of ADm in the acute phase of KD was confirmed in p eripheral blood mononuclear cells of 11 additional KD patients by reverse transc riptase-PCR (p monocytes but not lymphocytes were demo nstrated by real-time PCR to have increased ADm mRNA (p = 0.01). Plasma ADm pr otein level in 32 additional KD patients was also confirmed to be higher in acut e KD compared with convalescent KD (p m mic roarray results, other molecules known to be associated with coronary dilation, including nitric oxide, prostacyclin, acetylcholine, bradykinin, substance P, an d serotonin, were not elevated in acute KD. Our current study suggests that ADme xpressing monocytes that infiltrate the coronary vascular wall may be the cause of coronary dilation in the acute phase of KD.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence and consequences of uterine rupture in women who have had a delivery by caesarean section. Design: Systematic review. Data sources: medline, HealthSTAR, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register,National Centre for Reviews and Dissemination,reference lists, and national experts. Studies in all languages were eligible if published in full. Review methods:methodological quality was evaluated for each study by using criteria from the United States Preventive Services Task Force and the National Health Service Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. Uterine rupture was categorised as asymptomatic or symptomatic. Results: We reviewed 568 full text articles to identify 71 potentially eligible studies, 21 of which were rated at least fair in *** with elective repeat caesarean delivery, trial of labour increased the risk of uterine rupture by 2.7 (95%confidence interval 0.73 to 4.73) per 1000 cases. No maternal deaths were related to rupture. For women attempting vaginal delivery, the additional risk of perinatal death from rupture of a uterine scar was 1.4 (0 to 9.8) per 10 000 and the additional risk of hysterectomy was 3.4 (0to 12.6) per 10 000. The rates of asymptomatic uterine rupture in trial of labour and elective repeat caesarean did not differ significantly. Conclusions: Although the literature on uterine rupture is imprecise and inconsistent,existing studies indicate that 370 (213 to 1370) elective caesarean deliveries would need to be performed to prevent one symptomatic uterine rupture.

An Assessment of the Potential Use of Forest Residues for the Production of Bio-Oils in the Urban-Rural Interface of Louisiana

Louisiana is endowed with forest resources. Forest wastes generated after thinning, land clearing, and logging operations, such as wood debris, tree trimmings, barks, sawdust, wood chips, and black liquor, among others, can serve as potential fuels for energy production in Louisiana. This paper aims to evaluate the potential annual volumes of forest wastes established on detailed and existing data on the forest structure in the rural-urban interface of Louisiana. It also demonstrates the state’s prospects of utilizing forest wastes to produce bio-oils. The data specific to the study was deduced from secondary data sources to obtain the annual average total residue production in Louisiana and estimate the number of logging residues available for procurement for bioenergy production. The total biomass production per year was modeled versus years by polynomial regression curve fitting using microsoft Excel. Results of the model show that the cumulative annual total biomass production for 2025 and 2030 in Louisiana is projected to be 80000000 Bone Dry Ton (BDT) and 16000000 (BDT) respectively. The findings of the study depict that Louisiana has a massive biomass supply from forest wastes for bioenergy production. Thus, the potential for Louisiana to become an influential player in the production of bio-based products from forest residues is evident. The author recommends that future research can use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create maps displaying the potential locations and utilization centers of forest wastes for bioenergy production in the state.
