Detecting subtle yet fast skeletal muscle contractions with ultrasoft and durable graphene-based cellular materials

Human bodily movements are primarily controlled by the contractions of skeletal muscles. Unlike joint or skeletal movements that are generally performed in the large displacement range, the contractions of the skeletal muscles that underpin these movements are subtle in intensity yet high in frequency. This subtlety of movement makes it a formidable challenge to develop wearable and durable so?t materials to electrically monitor such motions with high fidelity for the purpose of, for example, muscle/neuromuscular disease diagnosis. Here we report that an intrinsically fragile ultralow-density graphene-based cellular monolith sandwiched between silicone rubbers can exhibit a highly effective stress and strain transfer mechanism at its interface with the rubber, with a remarkable improvement in stretchability(>100%). In particular, this hybrid also exhibits a highly sensitive, broadband-frequency electrical response(up to 180 Hz) for a wide range of strains. By correlating the mechanical signal of muscle movements obtained from this hybrid material with electromyography, we demonstrate that the strain sensor based on this hybrid material may provide a new, so?t and wearable mechanomyography approach for real-time monitoring of complex neuromuscular–skeletal interactions in a broad range of healthcare and human–machine interface applications. This work also provides a new architecture-enabled functional so?t material platform for wearable electronics.

Possible Detection of a Flare-associated Coronal Mass Ejection on an M-dwarf

We here report a probable detection of a stellar coronal mass ejection(CME)in active M dwarf KIC 8093473 by performing an analysis on its time resolved X-ray spectra observed by the XMM-Newton *** to the value at the quiescent state and the interstellar one,our spectral modeling returns a marginal(and probably evolving)excess of hydrogen column density in the flare state at a significance level of 1σ,which can be understood by an additional absorption due to a flare-associate *** CME mass is then estimated to be∼7×10^(18)–2×10^(20)g according to the ice cream cone model.

Ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions from a subtropical wheat field under different nitrogen fertilization strategies

Minimizing soil ammonia（NH_3） and nitrous oxide（N_2O） emission factors（EFs） has significant implications in regional air quality and greenhouse gas（GHG） emissions besides nitrogen（N） nutrient *** aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of different N fertilizer treatments of conventional urea,polymer-coated urea,ammonia sulfate,urease inhibitor（NBPT,N-（n-butyl） thiophosphoric triamide）-treated urea,and nitrification inhibitor（DCD,dicyandiamide）-treated urea on emissions of NH_3 and GHGs from subtropical wheat cultivation.A field study was established in a Cancienne silt loam *** growth season,NH_3 emission following N fertilization was characterized using active chamber method whereas GHG emissions of N_2O,carbon dioxide（CO_2）,and methane（CH_4） were by passive chamber *** results showed that coated urea exhibited the largest reduction（49%） in the EF of NH_3-N followed by NBPT-treated urea（39%） and DCD-treated urea（24%） over conventional urea,whereas DCD-treated urea had the greatest suppression on N_2O-N（87%） followed by coated urea（76%） and NBPT-treated urea（69%）.Split fertilization of ammonium sulfate-urea significantly lowered both NH_3-N and N_2O-N EF values but split urea treatment had no impact over one-time application of *** NBPT and DCD-treated urea treatments lowered CO_2-C flux but had no effect on CH_4-C ***,application of coated urea or urea with NPBT or DCD could be used as a mitigation strategy for reducing NH_3 and N_2O emissions in subtropical wheat production in Southern USA.

The unfolded protein response signaling and retinal Müller cell metabolism

The retina is one of the most energy demanding tissues in the body. Like most neurons in the central nervous system, retinal neurons consume high amounts of adenosine-5′-triphosphate（ATP） to generate visual signal and transmit the information to the brain. Disruptions in retinal metabolism can cause neuronal dysfunction and degeneration resulting in severe visual impairment and even blindness. The homeostasis of retinal metabolism is tightly controlled by multiple signaling pathways, such as the unfolded protein response（UPR）, and the close interactions between retinal neurons and other retinal cell types including vascular cells and Müller glia. The UPR is a highly conserved adaptive cellular response and can be triggered by many physiological stressors and pathophysiological conditions. Activation of the UPR leads to changes in glycolytic rate, ATP production, de novo serine synthesis, and the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway, which are considered critical components of Müller glia metabolism and provide metabolic support to surrounding neurons. When these pathways are disrupted, neurodegeneration occurs rapidly. In this review, we summarize recent advance in studies of the UPR in Müller glia and highlight the potential role of the UPR in retinal degeneration through regulation of Müller glia metabolism.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on Si release of alkali-enhanced Si-rich biochar and plant response

Recent studies have shown that silicon(Si)dissolution from biochar may be influenced by the pyrolysis *** addition,the enhancement of biochar by treatment with alkali has been proposed to produce a Si source that can be used for environmentally friendly plant disease *** this study,biochars from rice straw and rice husk pretreated with KOH,CaO and K_(2)CO_(3)and then pyrolyzed at 350,450 and 550°C were prepared to evaluate the effects of pyrolysis temperature on Si release and plant uptake from alkali-enhanced Si-rich *** Si and dissolution Si from the prepared biochars were assessed by different short-term chemical methods and long-term(30-day)release in dilute acid and neu-tral salt solutions,respectively,along with a rice potting experiment in *** both rice straw-and husk-derived alkali-enhanced biochars(RS-10KB and HS-10K2B,respectively),increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 350 to 550°C generally had the highest extractable Si and increased Si content extracted by 5-day sodium carbonate and ammonium nitrate(5dSCAN)designated for fertilizer Si by 61-142%,whereas non-enhanced biochars had more extractable Si at 350°*** alkali-enhanced biochars produced at 550°C pyrolysis temperature also released 82-172%and 27-79%more Si than that of 350°C produced biochar in unbuffered weak acid and neutral salt solutions,respectively,over 30 *** addition,alkali-enhanced biochars,especially that derived from rice husk at 550°C facilitated 6-21%greater Si uptake by rice and 44-101%higher rice grain yields than lower temperature biochars,non-enhanced biochars,or conventional Si fertilizers(wollastonite and silicate calcium slag).Overall,this study demonstrated that 550°C is more efficient than lower pyrolysis temperature for preparing alkali-enhanced biochar to improve Si release for plant growth.

Rational modulation of fluorophosphate cathode by anionic groups to reduce the polarization behavior for fast-charging sodium-ion batteries

Na3V2（PO4）2O2F （VP） is recognized as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its stable structural framework and high specific *** functional theory （DFT） and finite element simulations show that incorporating SO42-into VP decreases its band gap,lowers the migration energy barrier,and ensures a uniform Na+concentration gradient and stress distribution during charge and discharge ***,the average Na+diffusion coefficient of Na3V2（PO4）1.95（SO4）0.05O2F（VPS-1） is roughly double that of VP,leading to enhanced rate capability (80 C,75.5 mAh g-1) and cycling stability (111.0 mAh g-1capacity after 1000 cycles at 10 C current density) for ***-1 exhibits outstanding fast-charging capabilities,achieving an 80%state of charge in just 8.1 *** assembled VPS-1//SbSn/NPC full cell demonstrated stable cycling over 200 cycles at a high 5 C current,maintaining an average coulombic efficiency of 95.35%.

Evolution of deformation and relaxation behaviors of a prototypical Cu_(46)Zr_(46)A_(l8)metallic glass was explored by extensive creep tests under both physical aging and cyclic *** insights into the microstructure-induced dynamic heterogeneity which accommodates creep deformation were successively revealed via experimental measurements and spectral *** annihilation of local defects within metallic glass with increasing annealing time and cyclic numbers was observed through the reduction of amplitude in both activation energy spectra and relaxation-time spectra,which were also accompanied by an ascending value of β_(KWW).It is further found that the corresponding deformation units within the metallic glass do not disappear permanently,but are recoverable over the course of cyclic *** apparent suppressed relaxation process can be gradually alleviated with increasing resuming time between two consecutive cycles,behaving differently from physical aging,which indicates a notable discrepancy between thermal treatment and mechanical treatment.

For high-precision pulsar timing analysis and low-frequency gravitational wave detection,it is essential to accurately determine pulsar pulse times of arrival(ToAs)and associated *** measure the ToAs and their uncertainties,various cross-correlation-based techniques can be *** develop methodologies to investigate the impact of the template-matching method,profile shape,signal-to-noise ratio of both template and observation on ToA *** methodologies are then applied to data from the International Pulsar Timing *** demonstrate that the Fourier domain Markov chain Monte Carlo method is generally superior to other methods,while the Gaussian interpolation shift method outperforms other methods in certain cases,such as profiles with large duty cycles or smooth profiles without sharp ***,it is important to note that our study focuses solely on ToA uncertainty,and the optimal method for determining both ToA and ToA uncertainty may differ.

Application of magnesium and biosurfactant functionalized biochar composite in treating cyanobacteria in phosphorus and crude oil contaminated water

Various human activities have led to multiple contamination of natural water *** present study investigated the effect of a novel multifunctional biochar to treat nutrients,oil,and harmful algae in ***,magnesium(Mg)and biosurfactant rhamnolipid(RL)were incorporated into biochar,including Mg-biochar,RL-biochar,and *** adsorption efficiency on phosphate and total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH)was evaluated in separate batch ***,the inhibition effect of RL-modified biochars on cyanobacteria was *** results showed that Mg-impregnated biochar showed high adsorption capacity on phosphate(118 mg g^(−1)),while RLmodified biochar significantly reduced TPH(especially aromatic and light aliphatic fraction)with adsorption capacity of 44.4 mg g^(−1).The inhibition effects of biochar composites on algae in water without contaminants were in order of Mg-RL-biochar>RL-biochar>biochar with biomass reduction ranging 61-64%.Overall,Mg-RL-biochar was suggested based on this study due to its ability to remove PO_(4)^(3)−and TPH,and inhibit the growth of toxic algae.
