Secretion and regulatory mechanism of leptin during pregnancy in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus)

The aim of this study is to investigate the secretion pattern and regulatory mechanism of leptin during pregnancy in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). 100 pregnant golden hamsters were separated into 16 groups and the serum was sampled daily throughout gestation for the leptin assay. Results indicated that a gestational leptin profile existed during pregnancy in the golden hamster. To investigate if endocrine conditions during pregnancy contribute to this gestational leptin profile, serums collected during different reproductive stages were added to the adipocyte culture medium. Results showed that sera collected from all reproductive stages have significant stimulating effect on the secretion of leptin as compared with the control (P from day 2 of estrus cycle (cycling serum ) and day 2 of the lactation have the same effect on the secretion of leptin (P > 0.05). However, sera from mid and late pregnancy significantly stimulate leptin secretion as compared with the cycling sera (P f pregnancy have the strongest stimulating effect on leptin secretion compared with sera collected on day 8 (P f the pregnancy. But after the extraction of steroid hormones, sera collected during different reproductive stages have the same effect on leptin secretion in vitro. further study showed that dexamethason, progesterone and insulin stimulated while estradiol suppressed leptin secretion in vitro. Our results suggested that steroid hormones (or other steroid factors) have significant regulating effect on the leptin secretion during pregnancy and they may be the most important contributors of the gestational leptin profile in the golden hamster.

PULSED-co-electrodeposition （PCD） is a new and promising technique for producing alloymaterials of nanometer grain size. In this letter, Co-Ni alloys were produced by PCD, and theeffect of CO+2 ion concentration in the depositing baths on the Co content and the microstruc-ture in the corresponding deposit was studied by the position sensitive atom probe （PoSAP）,TEM and X-ray diffraction. The Co-Ni phase diagram shows that, at room temperature,there are two phases in Co-Ni alloys, one is εCo with hcp lattice, the other is αCo of fcc lat-tice. A Co-Ni alloy with a Ni content below 27% consists of single εCo, beyond 36% consistsof single αCo, in between consists of εCo + αCo. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to establish the utilisation of non-conventional animal waste in multiple livestock species systems. farmers (150) were selected from four out of ten districts of Central Uganda in Lake Victoria Crescent. A structured questionnaire was used and descriptive analysis showed that over 80% are smallholder farmers on 3.0) years. Household husbands (80%) significantly (P 1.0) as they cause poor livestock health due to pathogens, parasites and toxins which are associated (OD > 1.0) with poor growth, mortality and condemnation of livestock products. The remedy to unsafe non-conventional feeds is to apply effective solar-heating (75%), chemical and ensiling treatment methods. The study showed that there are no significant (P with utilising treated non-conventional feeds instead it improves production and sustainability of multiple livestock species systems.

Groundwater recharge and climatic change during the last 1000 years from unsaturated zone of SE Badain Jaran Desert

The history of groundwater recharge and climatic changes during the last 1000 years has been estimated and reconstructed using environmental chloride from unsaturated zone profile in the southeast Badain Jaran Desert, Nw China. By using a steady-state model for duplicate unsaturated zone chloride profiles, the long-term recharge at the site was estimated to be 1.3 mm yr-1. from one profile, which reached the water table, the climatic change events of 10—20 years duration were well preserved. There were 3 wet phases and 4 dry episodes during the recent 800 years according to the peaks and troughs of recharge rate calculated via chloride concentration and moisture content. There was a dry episode before 1290 AD. At ca. 1500—1530 AD, which is an important date, there was an abrupt change from drought to wet conditions. At the beginning of the 1800s, local climate changed from wet to dry occurred and subsequently deteriorated over the past 200 years. The unsaturated profile was compared with the Guliya ice core records. The agreement of wet and dry phases from 1200 to 1900 AD is quite good, whilst trends diverged during the last 100 years. It seems that the large-scale climate difference took place between mountain regions and the desert basin in Nw China during the 20th century, which closely correspond to the water table reduction of some 1 metre.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest of cancers with a five-year survival of roughly 8%.Current therapies are:surgery,radiation and *** is curative only if the cancer is caught very early,which is rare,and the latter two modalities are only marginally effective and have significant side *** have developed a nanosome comprised of the lysosomal protein,saposin C(SapC)and the acidic phospholipid,dioleoylphosphatidylserine(DOPS).In the acidic tumor microenvironment,this molecule,SapC-DOPS,targets the phosphatidylserine cancer-biomarker which is predominantly elevated on the surface of cancer ***,SapC-DOPS can selectively target pancreatic tumors and ***,SapC-DOPS has exhibited an impressive safety profile with only a few minor side effects in both preclinical experiments and in phase I clinical *** the dismal outcomes for pancreatic cancer there is an urgent need for better treatments and SapC-DOPS is a good candidate for addition to the oncologist’s toolbox.

The increase of micro and nano devices has led to the miniaturization and multi-functionalization of micro-mechanical, communication, imaging, sensing, chemical analytical and biomedical devices. The devices so mentioned above need power sources that are portable, have short charging time, longevity, high energy density and are environmentally friendly. Chemical batteries hitherto used to be the major power source for these devices but have a drawback of having low energy density. The energy density of the most improved lithium-ion battery was in the region of 0.2 kwh/kg. Micro-combustor is one of the most important components of the micro thermophotovoltaic (MTPV) conversion device. This work used numerical simulation to investigate the effect of Micro pin fin arrays on combustion. Using a micro combustor with micro pin-fin arrays inserted, it was observed the fins widened the region of combustion and extended the blow-off limit in the combustor. The fins exerted great influence on combustion as flow rate increased and thus improved the temperature distribution of the wall. The combustor with fins possessed higher heat flux in comparison with combustor without fins. There was combustion stability at inlet velocity of 4 m/s making the micro pin-fin array configuration ideal for MTPV application. The results obtained will be useful in designing a MTPV.

Aims The physiological responses during dormancy removal and multi-phasic germination were investigated in seeds of Paeonia corsica(Paeoniaceae).Methods Seeds of *** were incubated in the light at a range of temperatures(10-25 and 25/10℃),without any pre-treatment,after w(3 months at 25℃),C(3 months at 5℃)and w+C(3 months at 25℃followed by 3 months at 5℃)stratification,and a GA_(3)treatment(250 mg·l^(−1)in the germination substrate).Embryo growth,time from testa to endosperm rupture and radicle emergence were assessed as separate ***-plumule emergence was evaluated incubating the germinated seeds at 15℃for 2 weeks,at 5 and 25℃for 2 months on agar water before transplanting to the soil substrate at 10,15 and 20℃and at 15℃for 2 months on the surface agar water with GA_(3).Important findings Embryo growth,testa rupture,endosperm rupture(radicle emergence)and growth of the epicotyl were identified as four sequential steps in seeds of *** acid alone and warm stratification followed by 15℃promoted embryo growth and subsequent seed *** stratification induced secondary dormancy,even when applied after warm *** radicle emergence,epicotyl-plumule emergence was delayed for ca.3 *** time of epicotyl-plumule emergence was positively affected by cold stratification(2 months at 5℃)and GA_(3).*** seeds exhibited differential temperature sensitivity for the four sequential steps in the removal of dormancy and germination processes that resulted in the precise and optimal timing of seedling emergence.
