The Univariate and Bivariate Impact of HIV/AIDS on the Quality of Life:A Cross Sectional Study in the Hubei Province-Central China

This study is aimed to evaluate the quality of life （QOL） for individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus （HIV）/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome （AIDS） in Hubei province-central China by using WHOQOL-BREF instrument （Chinese version）. One hundred and thirty six respondents （HIV/AIDS individuals） attending out-patient department of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention （Chinese CDC） were administered a structured questionnaire developed by investigators. QOL was evaluated by using WHOQOL-BREF instrument （Chinese version）. The results showed that the mean score of overall QOL on a scale of 0-100 was 25.8. The mean scores in 4 domains of QOL on a scale of 0-100 were 82.9 （social domain）, 27.5 （psychological domain）, 17.7 （physical domain） and 11.65 （environmental domain）. The significant difference of QOL was noted in the score of physical domain between asymptomatic （14.6） and early symptomatic individuals （12）（P=0.014）, and between patients with early symptoms （12） and those with AIDS （10.43）（P〈0.001）. QOL in psychological domain was significantly lower in early symptomatic （12.1）（P〈0.05） and AIDS patients （12.4）（P〈0.006） than in asymptomatic individuals （14.2）. The difference in QOL scores in the psychological domain was significant with respect to the income of patients （P〈0.048） and educational status （P〈0.037）. Significantly better QOL scores in the physical domain （P〈0.040） and environmental domain （P〈0.017） were noted with respect to the occupation of the patients. Patients with family support had better QOL scores in environmental domain. In our research, QOL for HIV/AIDS individuals was associated with education, occupation, income, family support and clinical categories of the patients. It was concluded that WHOQOL-BREF Chinese version was successfully used in the evaluation of QOL of HIV/AIDS individuals in Chinese population and proved to be a reliable and useful tool.

Permeation of roxarsone and its metabolites increases caco-2 cell proliferation

The benzenearsonate, Roxarsone, has been used since 1944 as an antimicrobial, growth-promoting poultry feed additive. USGS and EPA report that Roxarsone (4-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzenearsonate) and metabolites, including AHBA (3-amino-4-hydroxybenzenearsonate), contaminate waterways at greater than 1100 tons annually. To assess human impact of these organic arsenic water contaminants, it was important to study their potential absorption. The human adenocarcinoma cell line, Caco-2, is a model for intestinal absorption. We found proliferative effects on Caco-2 cells at micromolar levels of these compounds, as monitored by [3H]-thymidine incorporation into DNA. Flow cytometry cell cycle analysis confirmed accumulation in S phase from 21% (control) to 36% (24 hour exposure to 10 μm AHBA). Confluent Caco-2 cells grown on collagen-coated Transwell plates were dosed on the apical side. After exposure, media from apical and basolateral sides were collected separately. Following removal of FBS by 30K centrifugal filtration, the benzenearsonates in the collected media were analyzed by HPLC. Analyses were at wavelengths in the ultraviolet/visible range where the absorbance values were linear with respect to concentration. Concentrations were calculated by comparison with analytically-prepared commercial standards. Results from cells dosed at 10 μm for 24 hours with AHBA, Roxarsone, or Acetarsone indicated 6%-29% permeation occurring from apical to basolateral side, modeling absorption across intestinal epithelium to the circulatory system. Benzenearsonate feed additives are frequently applied in combination with antibiotics, raising additional health concerns. We conclude that micromolar levels of these benzenearsonates are adequate to stimulate Caco-2 cell proliferation.

The Effect of Industrial Effluents on the Quality of Onukpawahe Stream, Tema-Ghana

Industrial effluents discharged into surface water body present a high percent of pollution in Ghanaian streams and rivers. The current study assessed the effects of industrial effluent on the quality of Onukpawahe stream which receives industrial effluents from the Tema metropolis. Effluent samples were collected from six （6） selected industries and the water samples were collected from sixteen （16） different locations on the Onukpawahe stream. Various physico-chemical parameters such as BOD, TDS, Conductivity, COD, pH, TSS, Turbidity, Temperature, Colour, Sulphate, Phosphate, Ammonia and Nitrate were analysed during the current investigation. The average values of all the physico-chemical parameters （except pH and DO） were all above the EPA sector specific effluent guidelines. It was established in the study that the industries have polluted the stream and have grievously compromised the quality of the Onukpawahe stream. The surface water and industrial effluent must be monitored by the authorities in order to prevent further degradation of the river quality.

Resin infiltrants have been effectively applied in dentistry to manage non-cavitated carious lesions in proximal dental ***,the common formulations are composed of inert methacrylate *** this study,we developed a novel resin infiltrant with microcapsules loaded with an ionic liquid(mC-IL),and analyzed the physical properties and cytotoxicity of the dental ***,the ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide(***2)was ***2 has previously shown antibacterial activity in a dental ***,mC-IL were synthesized by the deposition of a preformed *** mC-IL were analyzed for particle size and de-agglomeration effect via laser diffraction analysis and shape via scanning electron microscopy(SEm).The infiltrants were formulated,and the mC-IL were incorporated at 2.5%,5%,and 10 wt%.A group without mC-IL was used as a *** infiltrants were evaluated for ultimate tensile strength(UTS),contact angle,surface free energy(SFE),and *** mC-IL showed a mean particle size of 1.64(±0.08)μm,shriveled aspect,and a de-agglomeration profile suggestive of nanoparticles’presence in the synthesized *** were no differences in UTS among groups(p>0.05).The incorporation of 10 wt%of mC-IL increased the contact angle(pm 5 wt%reduced the SFE in comparison to the control group(pman cell viability was above 90%for all groups(p>0.05).The incorporation of microcapsules as a drug-delivery system for ionic liquids may be a promising strategy to improve dental restorative materials.

Background Distal pancreatic carcinoma is one of the most lethal cancers largely due to its high incidence of distant *** study aims to assess the prognostic value of splenic-vasculature involvement in resected distal pancreatic *** In this retrospective study,we collected the clinicopathologic information of 454 patients with pancreatic cancer and performed univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with progression-free survival(PFS)and overall survival(OS),with an emphasis on the prognostic value of splenic-artery and-vein *** Univariate analysis revealed that larger tumor size,non-intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(non-IPmN)-associated adenocarcinoma,poor differentiation,stage pT3,nodal metastasis,lymphovascular invasion,perineural invasion,and pathologic and radiographic evidence of splenic-vein invasion were significantly associated with shorter PFS and OS(all Pmultivariate analysis confirmed non-IPmN-associated adenocarcinoma,stage pT3,stage pN1-2,and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy as independent risk factors for both PFS and OS,and larger tumor size and radiographic evidence of splenic-artery invasion as predictors of PFS *** Guidelines should be developed for a uniform approach with regard to the examination and reporting of the status of the splenic vasculature when dealing with distal-pancreatic-cancer specimens.
