La.ora.ory testing of a.shuttle ca. ca.opy a.r curta.n for respira.le coa. mine dust control

Ca.opy a.r curta.n (Ca.) technology ha. been developed by the Na.iona. Institute for Occupa.iona. Sa.ety a.d Hea.th (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners a.d subsequently roof bolting ma.hines in underground coa. mines to protect opera.ors of these ma.hines from overexposure to respira.le coa. mine dust. The next logica. progression is to develop a.Ca. for shuttle ca.s to protect opera.ors from the sa.e overexposures. NIOSH a.a.ded a.contra.t to Ma.sha.l University a.d J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle ca. Ca.. NIOSH conducted la.ora.ory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle ca. Ca.. Testing wa. conducted on two different ca. configura.ions: a.center drive simila. to tha. on a.Joy 10SC32a. ca. model a.d a. end drive simila. to tha. on a.Joy 10SC32a. ca. model. Three different ventila.ion velocities were tested-0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, a.d 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventila.ion velocity encountered during loa.ing by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventila.ion velocity a.rflow over the shuttle ca. while tra.ming a.a.nst ventila.ion a.rflow. Test results showed a. a.era.e of the dust control efficiencies ra.ging from 74 to 83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39%-43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), a.d 6%-16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Incorpora.ing a. a.rflow spoiler to the shuttle ca. Ca. design a.d pla.ing the Ca. so tha. it is loca.ed 22.86 cm (9 in.) forwa.d of the opera.or improved the dust control efficiency to 51%-55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minima. impa.t on dust control efficiencies for lower ventila.ion velocities. These la.ora.ory tests demonstra.e tha. the newly developed shuttle ca. Ca. ha. the potentia. to successfully protect shuttle ca. opera.ors from coa. mine respira.le dust overexposures.

New Zea.a.d, a. a.na.ion, ha. been in existence for less tha. two centuries—whether one da.es its a.sumption of sovereignty to the 1835 Decla.a.ion of Independence by the Confedera.ion of United Tribes, the 1840 Trea.y of Wa.ta.gi between Ma.ri a.d the British Crown, or its a.ta.nment of Dominion sta.us in 1907. The question of a.sepa.a.e cultura. identity for this post-colonia., multi-cultura. country ha. therefore a.wa.s been a.complex one, a.d one which ha. ha. a.strong influence on much of our a.tistic expression to da.e: pa.ticula.ly, perha.s beca.se of its inherent tendency towa.ds the self-a.a.ysis only rea.ly possible within la.gua.e, litera.ure. The fa.t tha. our most fa.ous loca.ly born writer to da.e, Ka.herine Ma.sfield, specia.ised in the short story ha. certa.nly helped to esta.lish tha. a. a.vita. genre here. This pa.er a.cordingly ta.es four successive a.thologies of loca. short fiction—Fra.k Sa.geson’s Spea.ing for Ourselves (1945), Micha.l Morrissey’s The New Fiction (1985), Wa.wick Bennett a.d Pa.rick Hudson’s Rutherford’s Drea.s (1995), a.d Tina.Sha. a.d Ja.k ross’s Myth of the twenty-firstCentury (2006)—a.d a.tempts to cha.a.terise their respective, overla.ping visions of New Zea.a.d identity by conducting a.close rea.ing of a.representa.ive story from ea.h of them. The essa. concludes with a.ca.l for a.new a.thology which might a.tempt to give expression to this series of gra.ua. erosions of our initia. cultura. certa.nties into something more a.equa.e to the rea.ities of our pla.e in the world, both geogra.hica.ly a.d cultura.ly.

The reputa.ion-ba.ed trust mecha.ism is a.wa. to a.sess the trustworthiness of offered services, ba.ed on the feedba.k obta.ned from their users. In the a.sence of a.propria.e sa.egua.ds, service users ca. still ma.ipula.e this feedba.k. a.ction mecha.isms ha.e a.rea.y a.dressed the problem of ma.ipula.ion by ma.ket- tra.ing pa.ticipa.ts. When a.ction mecha.isms a.e a.plied to trust systems, their intera.tion with the trust systems a.d a.socia.ed overhea. need to be qua.tita.ively eva.ua.ed. This pa.er proposes two distributed a.chitectures ba.ed on centra.ized a.d hybrid computing for integra.ing a. a.ction mecha.ism with the trust systems. The empirica. eva.ua.ion demonstra.es how the a.chitectures help to discoura.e users from giving untruthful feedba.k a.d reduce the overhea. costs of the a.ction mecha.isms.
